Schwervon! explores its identity in Kansas City

Though Matt Roth and Nan Turner had already been a musical duo for over 10 years, the word “Schwervon!” didn’t infiltrate Kansas City’s vocabulary until 2012. In fact, their appearance at Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest that year took place the weekend they moved to KC from New York.

Three years later, the pair has become one of Kansas City’s most beloved indie pop acts. Since building a foundation in KC, Schwervon! has released two full-length albums and has performed hundreds of dates around the world, including a two-week European run with The Vaselines last fall. In addition to its clever, captivating ‘90s-influenced brand of rock, the band has also become known for its live show, chock full of playful stage banter and wacky show antics.

“We’ve done a lot of US touring and a lot of growing as a band since we’ve moved,” says Roth. “I don’t think we could have managed this while living in NY. KC has provided a soft landing for us to engage in, a vibrant local art scene, while at the same time motivating us to get out there and to grow.” For constant touring bands like Schwervon!, it makes sense to live in a central, less expensive locale with a smaller but thriving music scene. But being a band that is deeply rooted and established in a much larger city also presents its own set of challenges. “There’s great stuff to do in KC but we’re more isolated here, at least when it comes to the sort of DIY, arty, pro-feminist community that we love,” Roth mentions.

Regardless, Schwervon! has been able to carve out a distinct notch in local, regional, and national markets since moving to KC. In that time, Roth and Turner have had a chance to develop as artists, performers, and grow as a musical partnership. Their most recent LP Broken Teeth (released in 2014 on Haymaker Records; here’s our review on it) was their first acoustic album, which caused the two to examine the essentials of their songs. “As a two-piece band, you often hear the space in and around our songs. We’re not afraid of space. And clarity, which I really like,” says Turner, who shares songwriting duties with Roth. “But to play softer and acoustically—it’s even more eagle-eye focus on the song skeleton, and you notice quickly what works and doesn’t.” Broken Teeth showcases Schwervon!’s music at its most basic level, and it succeeds in remarkable ways. Even in a studio recording, the band’s unmistakable charm shines through in catchy, sincere songwriting.

The two have also honed their performance craft over the past few years. “The shows are so much better when people engage with the music,” says Roth, who writes and recites a Beat-style poem at each show, while Turner performs an interpretive dance. They owe this move to their theatrical background, as well as their desire to keep the audience engaged in their art. Turner says, “I think the cool thing for the audience is that if you haven’t seen us before—they’re watching this theatrical thing in the middle of indie rock songs and whether they love or hate it, it’s unexpected and just lives in that moment.”

If you haven’t had a chance to witness a Schwervon! show, you can catch them this Friday at Josey Records with The Cave Girls, Lauren Anderson, and The Sluts. They play at 6:15, and the show is free. Facebook event page.

Brooklyn hip-hop/neo-soul quartet Flyer Learning plays at The Living Room on 9.18

Posted on:

Back in June, Brooklyn hip-hop/neo-soul quartet Flyer Learning released ‘The 457 Sessions EP,’ a feel-good yet bold offering. On early track "You Got It Good," for example, slightly sinister instrumentation reminiscent of early Gorillaz melds with chill-voiced rapper Ben Bennett’s admonitions of a whiny youth to form delightful mellowness. "Heads Bop" (streaming below), similarly, sets Bennett’s fearless emcee ambitions against drum taps and coiling electronics that, combined with singer Chandanie Orgias’ breathy vocals, culminate in potential hypnosis. While unfraid to speak its mind, Flyer Learning knows not to preach but to provoke and it does so intriguingly with aware yet immersive music. West coast tour begins for OC rockers Media Jeweler, tomorrow at Beatnik Bandito

Posted on:

Get your rocks off with the rock band (full-stop) Media Jeweler tomorrow as they kick off their West Coast tour, saying and playing their goodbyes at the Beatnik Bandito in Santa Ana with Canyons, Slow Rose, and Rufrano. Sam and the gang will make a pit-stop in time for Pehrspace’s "First Fridays" 9/4 with support from Pregnant, Bloody Death Skull, and Madame Headdress, and then it’s off to the mystical lands of Norcal and beyond!

Unfortunately, y’all missed your chance at a free download of their debut album $99 R/T Hawaii, with songs that have recently been lauded by big-name tastemakers Pitchfork and Stereogum (we wrote some nice things about them, too). Media Jeweler had originally planned to self-release in August as we previously reported, but that’s all changed after a solid partnership with the Brooklyn-based label Fire Talk Records, whose roster includes acts like Dreamcrusher and Advaeta. Now, the album will be cut and released in limited quantites pink and black vinyl so you can get sensual with a physical copy on or before November 20th! And of course if you pre-order you’ll also get a digital download of the album, which is slated for a release September 18th on their Bandcamp.

Because let’s be honest: that round-trip airfare isn’t gonna pay itself.

New York singer/songwriter Elijah Wolf plays The Mercury Lounge on 9.25

Posted on:

As heard in "The Mountainside" (streaming below) or "When You Were Born" from his 2013 release ‘The Lonesome World Beyond the Trees,’ upstate New York-bred musician Elijah Wolf makes impressively sophisticated folk. Like Fleet Foxes, the early-twenties singer/songwriter tells relatable stories of longing that are delightfully accentuated by sweeping strings and thumping percussion. According to his Facebook timeline, the New York City-based Wolf is currently working on new music. In the meantime, he performs at The Mercury Lounge on 9.25. – Zach Weg

Brooklyn folk quintet Wilder Maker plays The Bowery Electric tomorrow (9.3)

Posted on:

The past is hard yet holy on Brooklyn folk quintet Wilder Maker‘s April-released EP, ‘Everyday Crimes Against Objects of Desire, Volume II.’ Comprised of such guitar-ached tracks as "Relief" and "Liliana" (streaming below), the second part of a trilogy is a tome on the lovelorn moments that have us looking back in smile-faced melancholy. Like the great poet C.K. Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Repair, the album illuminates the profound in the mundane, imbuing seemingly senseless pain with a certain sacredness. Wilder Maker is set to release ‘Everyday Crimes Against Objects of Desire, Volume III’ on 9.25. In the meantime, the band plays at The Bowery Electric on Thursday, 9.3. – Zach Weg

Alternative rock band Broke Royals to play Tropicalia, 9/18, and support second EP release

Posted on:

Broke Royals are a bold duo hailing from Virginia, bringing with them an inspired sound and fun energy. Having played together for barely a year, members Philip Basnight and Colin Cross have recorded and released two stellar EPs, The Luxury of Time Pts. I & II, fusing their different creative spirits into a wondrous collaboration. Broke Royals are fresh and they’re similar to the best parts of Bastille, but with an acoustic bent and heartstring-tugging lyrics. They’re on the rise in the region: they opened for UK band Life in Film last week. You can catch this dynamic pairing live at the Tropicalia, 9/18, playing second between Skyline Hotel and Bencoolen. Doors at 7, $10, and a great time is assured. -Jonathan Goodwin

Chillout with indie rockers Hillary Chillton Saturday at The Smell

Posted on:

Hillary Chillton, or "Hill Chill" as it’s affectionately inked, is a band that resides just east of Pomona in the quiet suburbs of Claremont. The five-piece rep the VLHS Warehouse in Pomona that, like DIY venues Bridgetown and The Smell, have never wavered to bring great local talent and ennervate youths to support the music community. As such, there’s an opulence of hi-gain twinkle and garage dirt in Hillary Chillton’s indie rock sound that balances pop sensibility without sacrificing that DIY aesthetic (their outputs are personally recorded and engineered). They’re also really into Weezer and Modest Mouse — just don’t harp them to cover "Float On" or "Pork and Beans".

Find them Friday at the stage of San Diego’s AwesomeFest 9, or hang back and watch them at The Smell this Saturday with some local cats: the previously featured post-rock angels Young Lovers and garage punk Saiyans Dustin and The Explosions. Listen to "Devil in Tights" from their recent split with Void Boys pop punk from the Bay. – Ryan Mo

From The Deli submissions: debut single from FEVER HIGH

Posted on:

"Tantalized" (streaming below) is the first single off the debut EP from Brooklyn-based indie-pop duo FEVER HIGH. Replete with perky synths, neon melodies, bright and catchy vocals, and a bevy of "oh-oo-ohs" and "doo-doo-doos," the song is an infectious electro-pop tune that would fit right in at an ’80s dance party. The duo consists of singers and instrumentalists Anna Nordeen and Reni Lane, and the EP was recorded and produced by Adam Schlesinger (the bassist for popular NY acts Fountains of Wayne and Ivy). Although the group has no scheduled shows, the EP is currently in the works. – Patrick Wolff

Brooklyn singer/songwriter Deby Medrez Pier plays at The Mercury Lounge tonight (9.1)

Posted on:

Brooklyn-via-Mexico-City singer/songwriter Deby Medrez Pier depicts the final beauty of transience in her painterly songs. On the ukulele-cradled "The Last Time" (streaming below), for example, the musician conjures a sweetly fleeting seaside romance with a Hemingway-esque elegance while she conveys perhaps ephemeral personal frustration on the guitar-fuzzed "July." Beyond its sheer prettiness, most striking about Pier’s music is its ageless nature; these deeply felt, sparsely-constructed tracks may sound like they came from early twentieth-century Paris but they’re just as vital in twenty-first-century New York. The VeeVees play Knitting Factory on September 28

Posted on:

Opening with an eerie rendition of Peggy Lee’s classic hit "Fever" before exploding with a gut-wrenching scream and three minutes of visceral rock-and-roll, the self-titled first track (streaming below) on "Cream of Heaven," the latest EP from Brooklyn’s The VeeVees, is a charismatic throwback to the in-your-face attitude that rock was built on. The group puts out a vibrant and dynamic energy that will have you banging your head along with the overdriven guitars and driving drums. Lead singer Sophia Urista’s voice is raw and powerful, bringing an element of punk to the rock-and-roll instrumentals, and commanding the attention of listeners. The EP, released back in June, starts off strong and is unrelenting over the course of its four songs, clocking in at a fast-paced fifteen minutes. The group recently performed at Irving Plaza and you can catch them next on September 28th at Knitting Factory. – Patrick Wolff

Punk DIY AwesomeFest happening Labor Day weekend

Posted on:

This weekend, the convergence of six DIY organizers will mark the ninth iteration of San Diego’s AwesomeFest. And for an event that started in 2007 as a joke in Riverside, it’s certainly picked up steam.

Hosted over three days, AwesomeFest will be spread through four eminent local venues: The Hideout, The Soda Bar, The Office, and U31, all of them equally vital to the growing SD music scene. With over 60 homegrown punk acts from across the country playing, including Hilary Chillton, The Stupid Daikini, Stymie, and Upset, you can bet that this event will be absent of any corporate sponsorship. No Heineken Dome, no Toyota Charging Station, and no free bodypainting booths. On the other hand, if you’re into loud garage bands, cold brews, and one of the most flagrant displays of DIY community strength over Labor Day weekend, this might just be the festival for you.

Awesome Fest 9 happens September 4-6, at venues between Washington Street and Robinson Ave., in San Diego. Set times available here. – Ryan Mo
