Honduras unveils video for “Paralyzed” + releases “Rituals” LP + play Shea Stadium on 09.16

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Honduras play the attitude card big time on this new video for single "Paralyzed," off their debut album "Rituals," scheduled for a September 25 release. We are digging the tense sound and tribal but uptempo post punk atmospheres, reminiscent of a mix of Joy Division and The Feelies, and the well produced succession of clean/quiet and loud/distorted section – that’s what rock’n’roll is all about! Lead singer Pat Philips’ vocals have also grown in confidence, which is a huge asset for an emerging indie band with big ambitions. See the band live at Shea Stadium on 09.16.

Celtic rock group Scythian hosts inaugural festival, Appaloosa, and promotes new LP, Old Tin Can

Posted on:

Long established in the Washington music scene, Celtic-Gypsy-folk rockers Scythian have turned a vision into a reality, organizing, hosting, and playing a festival of their own design. For many families in the Shenandoah Valley area and for many from across the country, this Labor Day weekend was made much sweeter by attending Appaloosa, a roots music festival that met its mission statement with great success: "Music Among Friends." Featured on NPR and The Washington Post, the experience was nothing to simply drive past. It was small in scale, but the energy and enthusiasm of the audience, the performers, the volunteers and vendors was one of welcoming and family. A family-friendly festival set in a scenic ranch resort just outside of Front Royal, VA, Appaloosa was something to behold.

Dan Fedoryka, Scythian’s own rhythm guitarist-vocalist-accordionist, related his experiences organizing the festival and playing full-time in the band for a decade. As has been the focus of their Kickstarter-fueled albums, the band’s focus is on their fans, giving them memorable experiences through their shows, music, and now Appaloosa. When planning a concert, Fedoryka’s priority is to spare no expense and give people the party of a lifetime, a philosophy that has inspired several weddings between Scythian fans and developed a widespread, dedicated following. A tenth of Appaloosa’s profits are being given to charities, mostly local to Front Royal, the hometown of the Fedoryka brothers and gracious hosts to the festival. The whole affair was lively and exciting, featuring local, small business vendors and acts from all over the country and musical spectrum, which were purposefully chosen to reflect Scythian’s breadth of sound. While the festival may be over, the spirit it brought will surely last the listeners until next year, which all are urged to attend. With a year to plan, Fedoryka is excited and optimistic about growing the festival and expanding its role in the community.

To top off the work behind Appaloosa, Scythian is also touring to support their new album, Old Tin Can, and will play some unannounced shows later this fall in DC at the Howard Theatre and the 9:30. Check out their music and mark Labor Day weekend 2016 as booked for Appaloosa! -Jonathan Goodwin

Bodies Be Rivers unveil new video + play Deli CMJ show on 10.17

Always exciting to see a young Brooklyn band grow! We premiered talented mellow poppers Bodies Be Riversfirst video a few months ago, and we just stumbled upon their new one for "Decay," which is a pretty darn good song (edgy too!). This is a particularly welcome surprise because we had already booked the act for our upcoming CMJ show, and seeing them this active is a great sign – two videos in a few months is not an easy thing to pull off for anybody! Come see them at The Living Room on Saturday October 17.

Ghostporn’s last show (as Ghostporn) tomorrow at Harvard & Stone

Posted on:

Duo Tasia Trevino and Kenny Carranza will play their last show as Ghostporn tomorrow, September 7th at Harvard & Stone. After the release of their Godard-inspired single "Vivre Sa Vie", the moody LA outfit have sweated out the summer, helping to close the curtains for Dirt Dress and keeping the Lollipop love strong at Echo Park Rising. Last we heard, they’re still working on an album to be announced later this year, and Buzzband’s Kevin Bronson ventured a guess that the duo will just change their name. I wouldn’t take any chances, though.

Ghostporn will be accompanied by the acoustic singer/songwriter Marnie Herald and ’70 pop revivalist Dustin Lovelis (The Fling). The show is free and the feels will be fresh, so come out. – Ryan Mo

Dreampop group Nightjacket releases video for Right Way To Fall

Posted on:

While folk singer-songwriter Holland Belle takes melody by the horns in her solo output, her collaborative work in Nightjacket goes a different way. Like Mazzy Star (which they’re oft-compared to), Belle and guitarist Jordan Wiggins are the creative force behind Nightjacket’s work, but they don’t mimic the aetheric qualities of Hope Sandoval and David Roback. The familiar acoustic strum ripples with each of Belle’s refrain, aptly paired with Wiggins’ cavernous reverb, inebriating modulation, or slapback fuzz. Backed by veterans Steve Lucarelli (Wounds, Gasoline Heart), Louie Schultz (Army Navy), and Diego Guerrero (Red Cortez), Nightjacket emanates a quaint, calming sound that can chill your spine like a twilight breeze through a desert highway.

Their debut EP "Eternal Phase" is available to stream in full on their Bandcamp. Watch their music video for "The Right Way To Fall" below. – Ryan Mo

A NYC band that deserves more attention: Elysian Fields work on new album

Posted on:

In our restless quest for the best possible artists to book for our upcoming CMJ shows, we stumbled upon NYC based duo Elysian Fields, who have been around for a while (1995!) and lately have been busy working on a new album – and also on opening a new venue! On their website’s "news" page we noticed this 2014 video for single "Channeling" – which we somehow missed at the time – and instantly fell in love with it. Directed by visionary illustrator/cartoonist Steven Mertens, this is a psych pop gem with imaginative, top notch production and a subtle but also moving alternation of tension and release moments. Lead singer Jennifer Charles’ incredibly seductive vocals are supported by melodies that are catchy and edgy at once. This is what we call a great song – and it made our week.

NYC electro pop duo Cafuné release new single ‘Fall Asleep Now’

Posted on:

"Fall Asleep Slow," the latest single from the Brooklyn duo Cafuné, is a laid-back track of summery electro-pop that brings to mind rooftop sunsets over the city skyline. The duo’s mixture of an uptempo beat with dreamy instrumentation, and singer Sedona Schat’s soothing vocals, results in a charmingly chill song that’ll have you reaching for the replay button whenever you’re in the mood to lounge around. Although "Fall Asleep Now" marks the band’s fourth release, it is in fact the first song they wrote together, penned just over a year ago, and it deals with the loneliness that one can sometimes feel in a city as large as New York. Released only one month ago, the track has already racked up close to 20,000 hits on Souncloud, and has been getting a bunch of positive reception around the web. Check it out! – Patrick Wolff

Garage rockers Baby Shakes unveil video + tour North Europe

Posted on:

New York City garage rock/girl-group Baby Shakes showcase the release of their second full length album “Starry Eyes” with the single (and accompanying video) “Summer Sun.” Though the warm days will soon give way to autumn, we can hang on just a bit longer by taking in this perfect slice of Coney Island atmosphere. Beach time fun is fully on display in both video and song, which captures the Ramones’ “Rockaway Beach” vibe with Ronnie Spector vocal harmonies. The three front-ladies make a solid case that brunettes are just as much fun as blondes at the shore. The band is currently on a European tour taking them through Ireland and Scandinavia, with a hometown show to surely follow that. –Dave Cromwell

Album review: New Baboons – New Baboons

Posted on:
With twangy guitars, plenty of organ, and vocals dripping with reverb, it’s obvious that New Baboons are purposefully channeling the sounds of the ‘60s on their self-titled debut album. Influenced by The Beach Boys and Velvet Underground, their airy, melodic songs combine the California sound with catchy neo-psych, garage rock, and power pop, resulting in something not often heard in the local scene.

New Baboons consist of Elliott Seymour (guitar and vocals), Adam Scheffler (guitar and vocals), Tom Livesay (bass and vocals), Paige Newcomer (keyboards), and Josh Klipsch (drums). Seymour, Scheffler, and Livesay did the songwriting, and the album was recorded on an eight-track in Seymour’s basement. Despite the vintage tone and sound, it is far from one-dimensional.

Several of the 11 tunes unapologetically borrow from the past. “History Books,” “Dress,” “Man, They Just Don’t,” and “Velcro Underground” (a tip of the cap to Velvet Underground) all pass for songs that could have been drifting from the windows of a VW bus in 1968. This isn’t a bad thing, as they are solid tracks that will keep the listener tuned in.

“Oh God, You Phantom” and “The Victor” are darker and a bit strange, but remain very listenable, which may equal a more interesting musical experience. Two highlights are “Worm in the Apple,” a pulsating, bass-heavy song that is reminiscent of The Shins’ early work, and “If You Find Some,” a piano-driven, soulful gem with powerful vocals and an extended jam that could go on even longer.

Overall, New Baboons is a good, layered offering that should grow on listeners the more it is heard. Some may suggest that the sound is somewhat formulaic, but it is a formula that continues to work and is given a unique and refreshing spin by the band.

You can check out New Baboons a couple times in the coming weeks: they’ll be playing the dinner show at recordBar on Tuesday, September 15 (Facebook event page) and Harling’s Upstairs on Friday, September 25.
