Live Review: Froth at Echoplex 11/12

Posted on:

It was too cold at the Echoplex last night. People inside were huddled up in jackets, but Roses warmed up the audience with some new dreamy jams — guitarist Juan Velasquez also called on the staff to turn down the AC.

Froth‘s van made it back, too. The guys looked beat after their North American tour with The Drums and Tamaryn, but this was the final stretch and their homecoming show. JooJoo seemed lax, but the crew simply crushed it with songs from their newest album Bleak — memorables like the drowner "Afternoon" and that upbeat "Postcard Radio" that swept Lollipoppers off their feet.

By 11, the venue was packed, and people were easing out of their jackets. Eyes were fixated on Tamaryn, starstruck and eager to hear Cranekiss live. A girl shouted, "You’re so dreamy!" After that performance, we’re inclined to agree.

Get some FOMO from the show on our Instagram, and catch Froth and Tamaryn again at the San Diego Music Thing this weekend. – Ryan Mo

NYC alt rockers Regret the Hour play Rough Trade tomorrow (11.17)

Posted on:

After a two year wait, NYC’s alt-rock band, Regret the Hour, have released a new EP entitled “The Far and the Near.” Evocative of the radio friendly alt rock of the late ’90s/early aughts, when the anger of grunge had been somewhat tamed, but distorted guitars still reigned supreme, the record features both lively and introspective tracks. “Somewhere at the deepest well/ I realize I’ve lost it,” lead singer, Nate McCarthy sings on “Distance.” Following a familiar template, Regret the Hour’s verses maintain momentum with patterned guitar melodies, building towards a chorus that erupts with drum-kit clashes and fearless emotion. The band will be playing at Rough Trade tomorrow (November 17) with Jesus On The Mainline and Animal Years. – Isabel Rolston

Providence electronic act Bellerophon plays The Middle East-Corner on 11.16 and Aurora on 11.17

Posted on:

Back in April, Providence electronic act Bellerophon shared two elegantly sensual songs, "Face The Sun" and "Cowboy Without A Horse" (both streaming below). While the first track has project mastermind Mauricio Ossa pondering the unreachable over skipping effects, the second one has him elusively singing about possible confusion above ambling guitars. Listening to these songs, one may recall both the plush shoegaze of Big Troubles and the chilled electronica of The xx while eagerly wanting more songs from this undeniably intriguing project. Bellerophon plays at The Middle East-Corner in Cambridge, MA on 11.16 and at Aurora in Providence, RI on 11.17.- Zach Weg

Boots ain’t emerging anymore, but he’s dope: video for C.U.R.E., live at Rough Trade tonight (11.13)

Posted on:

We’ve been following producer Jordy Asher of Boots since the days he was playing in duo Blonds, but would have never imagined he would go on to become Beyoncé’s main producer and – most importantly – lead the trip hop revival, something we had been waiting for quite some time. Ok, he may not be exactly an emerging artist anymore (although as an artist he’s far from established), but this kind of creative output is very relevant, and adds another element to what looks like a growing NYC psychedelic wave – after a few years dominated by the folk revival and the bare and bones power rock sound of the ’90s. Check out the video for C.U.R.E. below (animation by Anthony Schepperd), and don’t miss Boots live at Rough Trade tonight (11.13).

Electro-soul duo Overcoats plays Pianos tomorrow (11.14)

Posted on:

Tomorrow night (11.14) NYC’s Overcoats will be bringing their mellow electro-soul music to NYC’s lower east side. Although only comprised of two musicians, Hana Ellon and JJ Mitchell, the band offers music that’s diverse and multi-layered. Their voices, confident and seducing, bring to mind Lucius’ amazing harmonizing, and rise above the electronic instrumental base present throughout most of their self-titled EP. Single “The Fog” (streaming) begins sparsely, with pulsating vocal harmonies and a percussive loop, but as the two sing “Freedom is when I’m without you,” a drum thud and simple electric piano chords set the stage for some beautiful vocal arrangements. Definitely a band to keep an ear on, you can see them at Pianos tomorrow night. – Isabel Rolston

Live Review: James Supercave at The Echo 11/11

Posted on:

You know a show’s good when it makes a Wednesday night feel like a Friday night. And James Supercave (fka Masxs), the fast-rising psychpop project of Joaquin Pastor, did exactly that, headlining an Echo show with some heavy local talents.

Space sojourners VS Colour started off really laid back, but their prismatic grooves took the Echo earlybirds on a serious trip. Singer/guitarist Joe Bates even threw down some dance moves on their closing odyssey jam. Miya Folick followed soon after, meticulously working the sound on what started as a sparse solo performance, but took a turn for the experimental, and ended in a jaw-dropping finale with her drummer.

And then of course, there was James Supercave, the freshest of them all. Rolling out with a rework of 2014’s "Burn", Joaquin Pastor’s crew got strange on stage with their newest single, went far back with their 2011 breakout "Chairman Gou", and even threw in a two-song encore to the satisfaction of the crowd.

If you missed out on James Supercave last night, you can still catch him this Saturday at the San Diego Music Thing. Check out pictures of the Echo show on our new Instagram account @TheDeliLA, taken by the very talented Michelle McCausland. – Ryan Mo

Best kept NYC secret: Higgins play Cameo on November 14

Posted on:

It was a sweet surprise to see NYC’s Higgins listed as one of the bands scheduled to play one of the last shows at Cameo Gallery. The group’s debut album was a Deli NYC record of the Month so long ago we can’t even retrieve that post – that section of the site was so obsolete it could not be kept. That happened around 2006, since that’s the album’s release year, but the group has been active since the early aughts. The debut was a mellow, melodic record with lots of character and roots and bluesy elements, including some songs that sounded like outtakes from The Beatles’ Abbey Road, which is way more mind blowing than it sounds. Since then, the band kept at it quietly, so much so that we never realized they were still around, notwithstanding the three following full length releases, culminating in 2012’s "Straight A’s," a record that elegantly develops the gentlemanly crooning of Otis Redding and Chris Isaac. Let’s reciprocate the gentlemanlyness and celebrate one of the best kept NYC secrets at Cameo on November 14. I’ll wear their 2006 t-shirt!

 P.S. Gentlewomen are invited too.

My Body plays Cameo on 11/13 with Lemonade and Teen Commandments

Posted on:

We booked electro-pop duo My Body upstairs at Pianos during the 2015 CMJ Music Marathon, and we were impressed big time. Not only these guys write beautiful avant-pop songs, but they are a blast to watch live too: Jordan Bagnall sings heavenly and in pitch perfect fashion (that’s the kind of fashion we like!), while Darren Bridenbeck masters the… luminous pad (?) while entertaining with hilarious moves that walk the line between dorky and uber cool. The band will be performing at Cameo Gallery tomorrow (11.12) – just weeks before the venue’s closing. On the bill also two other local artists: Lemonade and Teen Commandments – do not miss!

Boston rocker Emily Grogan shares anthemic ‘Join Together’ off forthcoming album “Strings of Light”

Posted on:

Melding the innocence of "Imagine" and the force of Radiohead’s "Karma Police," Boston singer/songwriter Emily Grogan‘s "Join Together" (streaming below) off her forthcoming new album ‘Strings of Light’ is an electric call to arms. Fronting a battalion of hard drums and zinging guitars, the strong-voiced Grogan deflects the ploys of authorities while surging towards freedom with her fellow strivers. Spiked with the warmth that can be heard in pop, though, this rock song doesn’t shove but rather nestles the listener to attention. While Emily Grogan doesn’t currently have any upcoming shows listed, keep watch on her Facebook for future announcements. – Zach Weg

Album review: The Electric Lungs – Don’t Be Ashamed of the Way You’re Made

Posted on:
If you’re new to the Kansas City music scene, you need to know who The Electric Lungs are. This punk/synth rock band has been kicking it and rocking out since 2012, and still going strong. Following their 2013 full-length Simplified and Civilized, they are releasing their second full-length album Don’t Be Ashamed of the Way You Were Made. This album is basically the soundtrack of an awesome B-movie greaser film. The band incorporated rockabilly-influenced tunes that are infused with gritty distortion guitar chords and catchy piano melodies.

No two songs are alike. “Play it When You Need It” has a lot of attitude and angst, and this is reinforced by dirty punk chords with the innocence of a clean upright piano. This is a song that my teenage self can relate to while the band releases their frustration through the song. Then you have “Time, Whiskey and the Lord,” a positive, hopeful song about moving on that can be backed up by a New Orleans marching band. This features a breakdown bass solo that is unreal (respect!).

One of my favorite tracks, “Surgical Malfunction,” has been on repeat on my iPhone for a couple of days. The song starts up with a harsh strumming of a banjo that is later backed up by an organ that makes this song eerie and dark. After lead singer Tripp Kirby sings “I am the shadow that covers the sun,” there is silence for 3 seconds then the yelling of “I DON’T KNOW WHY!!!”, showing frustration of the character in the song. It is followed by a ‘30s ragtime piano solo then progressed later on in the song with an incredible rock organ solo that’s followed by an incredible drum solo breakdown. This hair-raising sinister song shows a lot of personality in 5 minutes that makes you crave more.

Compared to the last album, this one does not hold back. This album shows The Lungs’ true nature on how they play live on stage. This band is not afraid to be different with their unique repertoire of songs. Every track on this album is enjoyable, none of which you would want to skip.

Sunflower Beans unveil “Wall Watcher” single + announce release of LP “Human Ceremony”

Posted on:

After gracing the cover of our 2014 Fall/CMJ issue, Sunflower Bean went on to become one of the most buzzworthy emerging NYC bands. Their solid live show helped them land opening slots for the likes of DIIV, Best Coast, and Wolf Alice among others (they’ll be tourin gthe UK this month with The Vaccines and Palma Violets). The trio’s psych rock finds its main inspiration in the early, bluesy days of that genre, but with new single "Wall Watcher" (streaming), the band updates that sound through a more concise production, featuring guitar sounds and vocal melodies that transcend the ’60s. The band will celebrate the release of their debut LP "Human Ceremony" at Bowery Ballroom on February 25th, a few weeks before embarking for the SXSW festival. – Photo by Crista Simiriglia.

Riotgaze TÜLIPS brings Doom & Bloom to Non Plus Ultra

Posted on:

Some bands throw down their debut album a year into formation. Others go at it a little longer. For best friends Taleen Kali and Angie Bloom of TÜLIPS, it’s been a four-year wait, but well worth it.

The dual guitarists/vocalists come from completely different musical backgrounds: Taleen’s the "Doom", all about dirtbox growl and migraine-inducing feedback, while Angie’s the "Bloom", slick with 50’s jangle and doo-wop spirit. They’re an unlikely pair, but continual back-and-forths with mixtapes have drawn these polar opposites together. And when glued down with drummer Travis Moore and bassist Miles Faster, TÜLIPS keep it classy, leaving local crowds reeling from tinnitus in pools of sweat. Don’t believe me? Just ask the bands that shared their bills, like LA FONT and Bür Gür.

Doom & Bloom releases Friday the 13th from Lollipop Records. TÜLIPS’ album release party will also include sets from Terminal A and BomBón, with a DJ set from L.A. Girlfriend. Listen to "Hotspur" below. – Ryan Mo, flyer art: Maritza Torres, Typeset: AJ Horton
