Mobile Steam Unit set to drop new EP and play Rough Trade

Posted on:

The "our band transcends genres" is one of the most frustrating lines to come across in a band bio, but I’ll be damned if Mobile Steam Unit’s music is easy to wrangle into one of these nice and clearly defined boxes. The Brookyln-based five-piece, whose sound winds through early 90s alt, nudisco, funk, synthpop and country, manages to not only pull off an eclectic auditory tasting, but does so in such a tight way, that you almost forget that what you’re listening to is bananas. It’s all the chaotic goodness you’d never expect, but are stoked to have stumbled on.  We’re hyped to hear that the band is dropping a new EP of what’s sure to be highly virtuosic weirdo rock Oct 30th at Rough Trade, opening for RANN. While waiting you can get your Mobile Steam Unit fix by streaming them below. – Olivia Sisinni

Check out The Wimps’ self titled debut album

Posted on:

Part-time wimps, part-time Righmond rockers, The Wimps bring forth a peculiar blend of 60’s pop, alternative rock, and psychedelia. Listening to “Dream Girl” (the 10th track off their album), something comforting about this band’s rustic sound makes its way inside us. It’s vintage. It’s nostalgic. It’s the 1×12 combo amp spring reverbed guitar tone with a hint of tube crunch, not to mention the twangy, speech-driven vocal stylings of Brent McCormic, topped off with quirky lyrics of empty days and empty wallets. It takes us back to one of our favorite records from yester-millennium: Eric Burdon’s 1964 “House of the Rising Sun”. Take a listen to their full album The Wimps down below. –Ashley Muniz

Willie Green drops new album and feathered octopus.

Posted on:

Not since Dabrye’s two/three has a producer collected such a monstrous and diverse group of rappers and pushed them out of their comfort zones and into the further realms of phantasmagoria. In the video for “The Feathered Octopus,” the first of hopefully a whole series from his new Doc Savage EP, Brooklyn producer wunderkind Willie Green provides a polyrhythmic backdrop for two of indie hip hop’s preeminent lyricists to wax intangibles. Like the album, the vid is rife with hip hop cameos. Watch repeatedly, you will be wrestling with more than the language. – BrokeMc

Halfnoise releases ‘Sudden Feeling,’ goes on a 4 week US tour

Posted on:

Turn up the noise! Or should I say “half” noise? Nashville’s Zac Farro is coming at us with his downright hypnotic indie pop album Sudden Feeling, the third release of Farro’s solo project, Halfnoise. One could simply melt away into the multifarious pad, lead, and bass synths that swirl, swell, and shimmer over a percussive hodgepodge—not to mention Farro’s smooth, velvety tenor vocals as they proclaim the sorrows, losses, and loves of times past. The sound is quite reminiscent of The Postal Service’s solemn vibes shrouded in a lighthearted aesthetic. Just take a listen to the album’s title track (streaming below) and you’ll know what I mean. And in case you need another taste we’ve added his single In The Summer down below as well. Halfnoise is touring the states this Fall, so grab a copy of Sudden Feeling to help you wait out his arrival. – Ashley Muniz

Phobos releases debut album and plays Rocketown 10/7

Posted on:

The Phobos moon is a satellite from Mars, so it makes sense that the spacey-sounding Nashville-based astro-prog band would go under the same name. On their latest album, I, Phobos explores major post-rock vibes, and tasty math-rock tinged licks that sound totally out of this world. Listen to their track "Yearn and Memorize" streaming below and check them out at Rocketown 10/7 with Polyphia and I, Griever.Olivia Sisinni

Buzz Alert: Pool Cosby subverts the rules of pop with ‘Little Do They Know’

Posted on:

We always enjoy quirky pop songs, but Pool Cosby, a Brooklyn sample-based electronic trio that popped up in our NYC homepage ‘NYC New Bands With Buzz’ chart, have pulled off something quite rare in single/video ‘Little Do They Know:’ they married quirkness and emotion. A warm, loungy atmosphere introduces a beautifully delicate melody sung by… a Micky Mouse relative of sorts, singing semi-unintelligible lyrics. As counter-intuitive as that sound, the song is so perfectly produced that we soon found ourselves sincerely captivated by this mysterious creature and his/her emotional depth. The video makes this process even easier, for those enjoying the ladies… and we’ll leave it at that. The group is no one hit wonder – their single ‘Lookin’ Up ft. Valentein" recently charted at #12 on Spotify’s United States Viral 50. The band is active live but currently has no shows scheduled.

Nuf Said releases video for “Rise”

Posted on:

Doesn’t it suck that summer is over? For many it means returning to the daily grind, and for others who couldn’t afford a vacation… continuing it, but with no sunny days, warmth or beach getaways as consolations. It’s enough to drive someone crazy, or at least induce crazy dreams. That’s exactly what neofunk Nuf Said’s new video for "Rise" seems to narrate. Vividly animated by Miguel Rueda, the video tells a trippy story of a woman, lead singer Ioanna Vintu, dreaming of herself and others, including members of the band, going insane over the repetitive absurdity of their daily lives. The video culminates with Vintu and a friend playing cards in a cafe with an alien they previously hit with their car  The trippy visuals are perfectly accompanied by the track, whose syncopated drum pattern, eerie vocals and disjointed instrumental parts fit right in, and re-emphasize the themes of the video. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

No Nets celebrate release of ‘Bright Light’ LP at American Beauty on 10.23

Posted on:

If songs had a psychological profile, Brooklyn No Nets‘ new single Dark Matter, from their upcoming album ‘Bright Light,’ to be released on October 21, could be described as a bi- (or even tri-) polar song. Disparate influences, from post punk, pop, glam and grunge, amalgamate and juxtapose, building a rather unpredictable track, made even more so by Sal Mastrocola’s intentionally deranged vocal delivery. We like crazy vocals here at The Deli NYC (Frank Black got that concept ingrained in our brains), and the guy pulls it off admirably well. The band will celebrate the release at American Beauty on October 23rd.

Deli Covergirl Brittany Campbell drops new single and video

Posted on:

Brittany Campbell continues her electric pop diva reign of NYC with her new single and video “Buzz.” Just in time for cuddle weather, this sex-infused ode to altered states of consciousness seems designed to bring you closer to someone either on the dancefloor or between the sheets. Don’t get it twisted, though, Brittany is a fan of wordplay and the double entendres run wild in this song. From the diamonds in her eyes to the “buzz” of love/drugs/fame, we’ve all got a need to fulfill. Let Brittany Campbell bring you closer. – BrokeMc

Grunge rockers Big Cheese drop new LP “Supersonic Nothing”

Posted on:

The Nirvana comparisons for Brooklyn’s own Big Cheese are really easy – and definitely there – but complemented by other unexpected influences – for example, in Adam Patten’s vocals we hear a little of Soul Coughing, a criminally underrated Brooklyn band from the late ’90s. Supersonic Nothing, the Big Cheese’s latest LP, is a lo-fi whirlwind combining sludgy, sledge hammer riffs with vocals that always seem to be teetering on the brink of a nervous collapse. If grunge isn’t dead, Big Cheese are the ones who are here to prove it. Check out their new music video "Thank You" below. – Olivia Sisinni

Batya unveils songs from debut EP, plays Rockwood on 11/12

Posted on:

In her debut EP (to be released soon, but most tracks are available for streaming on her Soundcloud pageBatya passes an important litmus test for any emerging songwriter: being able to convincingly convey emotion. A self-described dream pop artist, the 19 year old New York artist introduces herself with "What’s my name," a track that walks the line between folk and pop ballad. Batya’s best asset is her haunting, ringing yet expressive voice, which drips with sadness in a way that resonates well with the song’s somber tone. Her lyrics too do a good job of conveying the track’s emotional qualities, as she asks herself a series of existential questions that remain unanswered. It’s a promising start for a young artist, and its hopefully one she’ll be able to capitalize on for future efforts. You can check out her track below, and catch Batya live at Rockwood on 11/12. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Buzz Alert: The Royal They mix garage and indie rock vibes on self titled album

Posted on:

Brooklyn-based trio, The Royal They serve up chunky punk rhythms with some serious melody writing chops. On their latest release, a self-titled EP, indie rock vibes are paired with deceptively heavy garage rock licks. It’s control and chaos, nice and nasty. Check out the Royal They streaming below. – Olivia Sisinni
