Buzz Alert! Adiós Ghost plays Pianos residency on October 12,19 and 26

Posted on:

Pianos is one of the few NYC venues left that still dares to host emerging artist residencies (they actually do that in two rooms). We always pay attention to these bands, because the fact they were invited means they have a good live show and an expanding fan base, which are important factors for any band. Adiós Ghost is an adventurous Brooklyn band that plays an intricate brand of avant-pop that will excite the aural canals of those of you into Yeasayer and Animal Collective. Their recent EP ‘Endless Return‘ is their first release since 2014, and it’s a very interesting record. Employing electric and electronic instruments, and also saxophones at times, the band’s arrangements shine for their transparent quality, and very processed references to African melodies and rhythms. Each song seems to be built on musical blocks that support and complement each other, resulting in airy and flickery compositions. Check out opening single ‘Tension’ below and don’t miss one of their upcoming Pianos shows on October 12,19 and 26.

Brooklyn post-punkers Tammy about to release 4 song EP

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Tammy is a fiery female fronted band we stumbled upon  that – we predict – will change their name within a year. Their only single available for streaming, ‘The Fortress,’ is a lo-fi, but perfectly orchestrated homage to the early post punk years (late ’70s/early ’80s), with authentic semi-atonal vocals and an angularity reminiscent of a rougher, fuzzier version of the early Stranglers. The scores of New Yorkers who are anxious about the dystopian future should check them out.

Posted on:

Nashville’s psychedelic trio Ttotals might have not released any new material in two years, but that’s not preventing them from going on tour – maybe becuse their 2014 record ‘Let Everything Come Through‘ is an drone rock gem that deserves to be brought to the genre’s fans one at a time. The group leftr on October 7 for Charlotte, NC, and will drive north and then south again to hit NYC, Boston and then Philly and Harrisbourrg, VA, with a final date in Lexington, KY on October 14. Fans of Jesus & Mary Chain and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are advised.

RIP NYC Indie Hip Hop pillar Majesty

Posted on:

We learned that MC Majesty passed away this past week. Along with Dayv “Mental” Cino, Majesty helped found Legendary Cyphers, a weekly free all-ages event every summer Friday in Union Square park since August 2013. Majesty was family to many in the scene, known to be supportive, positive, and an embodiment of everything that is Hip Hop culture. The NYC Hip Hop community mourns the loss of his vibrant energy today, but his spirit still resonates in the beats and the concrete, in the hearts and elevated minds he helped cultivate. Catch him spark off this promo for the first season:

Bridges & Powerlines release new LP ‘National Fantasy’ on 10.14 at Pianos

Posted on:

In NYC, bands are born and die on a daily basis. Sometimes, though, they return. Bridges and Powerlines has been making records since 2007, which means that they have been around for at least a decade (congrats are due). The band plays a brand of indie pop that interestingly blends elements of folk, rock and synth-pop, although the rootsy factor is definitely more pronounced in the upcoming LP’s first single and title-track ‘National Fantasy,’ whose video is streaming here. The storyline follows a backpacking skateboarder on a quest for direction, appropriately referencing Spaghetti Western bothvisually and sonically. The band will be celebrating the new release with a show at Pianos on October 14th. – photo by Mara Abols

Mountainwalker brings genre bending folk to Acme Feed & Seed on 10/11

Posted on:

Combining trippy, layered back beats with smooth vocal hooks, Mountainwalker is a genre-bending folk musician whose rich lyricism has us totally hooked. Utilizing complex rhyme schemes and elements from psych and indie rock the Nashville-based artist’s musical approach is unique if not a little unorthodox. Either way, we’re major fans. Check out Mountainwalker at the Acme Feed & Seed 10/11 alongside The Medium and Devon Gilfillian and listen to "What You Got" off his latest release Parlor Songs streaming below.-Olivia Sisinni

Miniature Tigers return with single ‘Dreaming’ – new LP out on 10.22

Posted on:

We always have a special place in our heart for the bands that were rewarded with the NYC Record of the Month, and Miniature Tigers (a band currently split between NYC, LA and Arizona) is one of them. The quirky synth pop quartet just unveiled this new single entitled ‘Dreaming,’ from their upcoming full length ‘I Dreamt I Was A Cowboy,’ due out October 28th. We are glad to report that the quirkiness hasn’t abandoned them, but was actually taken to the next level, with a track that incorporates elements of 8 bit music, ondulating analog synths, and fluid melodies that contrast with the angular nature of the arrangement. If this is a dream, it’s of the bizarre variety. The band will be in NYC at Sunnyvale on December 22nd.

Jaye Bartell brings his moody folk to Baby’s All Right on 10.16

Posted on:

Jaye Bartell‘s "Light Enough" is a record born out of a very particular kind of self-inflicted seclusion: the paradoxical one happening in one the most populated pieces of land in the world: Brooklyn. Somebody‘s referred to this phenomenon as "The Lonesome Crowded West." Greenpoint, specifically, is where the songwriter moved to in 2013, from Asheville, NC (he’s originally from Massachusetts), looking – we assume – for inspiration after a series of early releases. The only embeddable song from the album, ‘Laundry Line’ (streaming) perfectly represent the full album, echoing at once Leonard Cohen’s intimate existentialism and Syd Barrett’s droney, suspended melodies (Barrett’s fans should check out opener ‘G & Me‘). The mostly acoustic guitar work also deserves a mention, for its beautiful simplicity. The fact that Baby’s All Right booked Jaye is an extra reason to pay attention to this artist, so you may want to check out his upcoming show on October 16.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Premiere: Crushed Out’s latest music video “Out of the Blue”

Posted on:

NYC-based husband/wife team, Crushed Out, is back at it again, and The Deli is thrilled to premiere the duo’s newest music video, "Out of the Blue." The video spotlights the band’s super fun, assuredly trippy aesthetic, and the tune alternates heavy, bluesy riffs with the group’s signature surf rock hooks–making "Out of the Blue" feel ambiguous in decade, but instantly infectious. Check out the premiere of "Out of the Blue" below, and if you’re hungry for more, listen to Crush Out’s soundcloud here.-Olivia Sisinni

Luray brings ambient-banjo-indie to Hardywood Craft Brewery 10/14

Posted on:

Ambient, banjo-lead indie rock is a descriptor that’s sure to turn heads, but Luray, a band who fails to fit neatly into the hard lines of "alt-folk," really does encompass all of those elements. Pairing synths with traditional folk, the Richmond VA-based group gives bluegrass/americana a fresh face, successfully blending old with new. Listen to Luray streaming below, and check them out at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery with Camp Howard and Mikrowaves on 10/14.-Olivia Sisinni

Ghost of Jupiter to release new album 10/21 at Lizard Lounge

Posted on:

MA-based Ghosts of Jupiter blend beautifully etheral vocals with swirling guitars and strong synths to creating a powerful psychedellic potion. The band, who are set to drop a new album this month, effortlessly span a liminal time place–sounding distinctively like a vintage record store pickup, without falling into psych-band tropes that are long tired out. Check out Ghosts of Jupiter 10/23 at the Lizard Lounge to pick up a copy of their latest release, The Great Bright Horses, but in the meantime you can stream their first single off the album below.-Olivia Sisinni
