Electro-soul NYC trio JIL plays Mercury Lounge on 12/2

Posted on:

Despite a number of high-profile perfomances with the likes of Pusha T and Dev Hynes, electro-RnB act JIL have kept a relatively low profile up until now. With a lack of information out there about them, the trio has let the three tracks released to date do all the talking – and they certainly have lots to "say." The band’s sound is a head-bopping mix of distorted synths and guitars, booming percussion and the soulful, pristine vocals of their anonymous singer. Latest single "All Your Words," (streaming) sounds like a dark, tempestous sea thrashing about, while unexpectedly serene vocals seem to offer safe haven above its rough waves — and a vantage point to stare at the chaos below. JIL can’t release new material soon enough. Maybe you can hear some when they take the Mercury Lounge’s stage on 12/2. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Buzz Alert: Satellite Mode releases single “Warm Fire Lightning,” plays Mercury on 12/2

Posted on:

After years spent writing songs for other acts (the technical term is "ghost-writing"), about a year ago, New Yorkers Jess Carvo and Alex Marko decided it was time to "come out:" a tragedy in Jess’s family paved new paths in the band’s direction and sound, in a way that made their songs too personal to be signed off to others. That’s how electro-pop duo Satellite Mode was born. Just a month ago they gathered all the singles released in the past year in the approproiately named ‘Singles‘ EP.  Their brand new track “Warn Fire Lightning” (streaming) features undulating electronic textures set behind haunting, pop-tinged melodies. Check out the song below and come see Satellite Mode live at Mercury Lounge with Slow Sugar on December 2nd. Let’s hope there’s more to come in the near future! – Ashley Muniz

Lip Talk readies new release, plays at Baby’s All Right 12.11

Posted on:

Formerly known as Railbird (a band we booked at one of our CMJ shows years ago), Brooklyn’s psychedel-ectronic pop band Lip Talk released their last spellbinding EP “Ghost” two years ago, and – according to their website – has a new release coming out… last month! (Delays are not exactly rare in the record industry). The groups toured quite a bit in the fall, and supported Okkervill River at Webster Hall on October 20th. If you enjoy edgy beats, swirling synths, droning guitars, and seductive, airy vocals, make sure to take a listen to the self-title single below and catch them live at Baby’s All Right on December 11. Looking forward to the new release, whenever it may drop! – Ashley Muniz, photo by Jackie Lee Young / VICE

HIDEOUT announces sophomore LP + plays Baby’s All Right on 11.30

Posted on:

Following the 2014 debut album ‘Rookie’, HIDEOUT (the solo project Gabriel Rodriguez, a live guitarist for Cults) is preparing to release his sophomore full length ‘So Many Hoops/So Little Time’ in early 2017. “Doctor”, the first single off the record, initially draws attention with a cheerful electric guitar intro reminiscent of the more jangly bands from the psychedelic revival of the late ’80s. A jumpy piano keeps the mood up, although the song’s lyrics seem to  tap into the negative facets of our psychological processes. Ranging sonically and lyrically from whimsical space-pop to nostalgic singer-songwriter tracks, the album’s essence is fused with the recent passing of Rodriguez’s brother. Listen to “Doctor” below and catch the band live at Baby’s All Right on November 30th at Pavo Pavo’s record release show. – Ashley Muniz

Born in Boston as the project of singer-songwriter Ella Joy Meir and guitarist and composer Asher Kurtz, Iris Lune is now a Brooklyn based quartet, and plays expansive, mellow pop with ambient influences and jazzy inclinations. In single ‘Triplets’ (video streaming below) the band utilizes atmospheric vocal samples and electric piano to create a fluid drone on which Ella’s mellow vocals float adrift. Iris Lune will be performing at Rough Trade on December 11 with two other interesting and like-minded local acts: Arthur Moon and Nozart.

Buzz Alert: Don’t miss your chance to listen to the Pressure Kid’s latest single

Posted on:

Initially, "You Missed Your Chance," the latest single from Nashville-based band, The Pressure Kids, sounds sweet, dance-y and instantly catchy. With soaring choruses that betray just a bit of twang, strong melodies, and flitting beats, you might almost miss the deeper lyricism lurking beneath the polished track. When you take the time to peel back to the words, the song becomes a mediation on missing chances, the melancholy that surrounds it, and the the strive to move forward and be ok. An anthem for those amid the 20-something malaise, be sure to listen to the single streaming below.-Olivia Sisinni

Kindling brings their shoegaze-y indie rock to Brighton Hall 1/18

Posted on:

As their name suggests, there’s definitely something incindiary about Easthampton-based band Kindling. Their songs are thick with a nasty, fuzz and feedback coating, paired against ethereal vocals that somehow manage to float above the firey instrumental whirlwind happening beneath them. Catch the band at Brighton Music Hall 1/18 playing with City of Caterpiller and The Saddest Landscape, and be sure to stream them below.-Olivia Sisinni

Recluse Raccoon brings their soft psych sounds to The Camel 12/9

Posted on:

While the name Recluse Raccoon may have the sheen of simple children’s programing, the Richmond-based three-piece is far from delivering clean, simplistic tunes. Billing themselves as a psychedellic-jazz-pop band, the group is certainly not too shy to serve up angular melodies, but Recluse Racoon’s tracks never stray too far from structure–they often root themselves with a soft, driving tom-tom–and create tracks that edge toward experimental, but never feel loose. Maybe what’s most striking about the band is the voices–gossamer vocals that border on ghostly create a distinct, ethereal, quality to their songs. With a sound that inspires introspection, the band is definitely our suggestion for your next grey, moody day. You can catch Recluse Raccoon playing The Camel 12/9 with Lightfields, The Wimps and Get in the Car, but in the meantime, stream them below.-Olivia Sisinni

Really Big Pinecone releases sophomore LP ‘What I Said About The Pinecone’

Posted on:

We somehow missed the excellent, almost self titled debut record by Brooklynites Really Big Pinecone, released in early 2015: it’s a math flavored psych-pop gem that made the Rolling Stone list of 15 Great Albums You Didn’t Hear in 2015. The group, which would be an ideal touring companion for Deli NYC favorites Celestial Shore, just released their sophomore album ‘What I Said About The Pinecone.’ The record, while being thoroughly enjoyable, fulfils the band’s promise to deliver music that’s "messy, but playful, abstract, as well as earnest and joyful." Check out single W.I.S.A.T.P. below, and follow the band’s bandcamp profile for updates about upcoming shows.

The Landing plays Baby’s All Right tonight (11.28) + talks about the creative process on Delicious Audio

Posted on:

Meditating about the universe is heavy stuff but, like much in life, you have the option of being consumed, or delighted by your surroundings. Brooklyn-based electronic artist, The Landing, does the latter. Producing synth-pop tracks that have their feet planted firmly on the ground, but their eyes to the sky, The Landing’s songs capture the bliss of infinity, but are packaged in a way that harkens back to pop hits of the early 60’s. The result is tunes that are spacey in scope, but still feel like home. The Landing will be performing tonight (11.28) at Baby’s All Right on a uber-cool all NYC electronic bill including also Salt Cathedral and Ela Minus. He also answered a few questions about his creative process in the interview below.

Thirdstory releases new single ‘G Train”, plays Baby’s All Right on 12/18

Posted on:

This could be the first and last time you read about NYC band Thirdstory on the pages of The Deli. It’s not like we have anything against the talented soul-folk band, rather, it’s that too many people are beginning to jam with their catchy, rugged sound. The latest of their newer legion of fans appears to be none other than critically-acclaimed emcee Pusha T. On the highlight of the trio’s recently released Searching EP, "G Train," they pair up with Pusha to deliver a hard-hitting track that embodies the gritty, resilent nature of New York and New Yorkers. Though T is from Virginia, he feels right at home on a song about the underside of The Big Apple. Thirdstory are on a world tour right now, but you can catch them back at home on 12/18 at Baby’s All Right. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber
