Noah Kittinger has made a name for himself by crafting complexly textured music with a minimalist structure, and his lastest release, Bloom, further refines that sonic path. Showcasing his keen sense of depth and darkness, the EP prominently features Kittenger’s hazy, haunting vocals, which are contrasted against echo-y beats that almost feel as if they edge toward the void. It’s 7-tracks worth of layers to peel, and single N.Y.E. (streaming below) is a good place to start. – Olivia Sisinni

Rodney Tennor celebretaes release of debut EP ‘Smother’ at Rough Trade on 12.05
Rodney Tenor’s music embodies the same personality as Vince Vaughn’s character in the indy-comedy classic "Swingers." His two tracks to date emit that same cool, suave confidence that approaces the line but never crosses over into offputting arrogance. On "Prognosos Hypnosis," Tenor sings sweetly over a funky, Neptunes-inspired beat, displaying the kind of range and poise requisite for any true RnB artist. His lyrics don’t embody any sort of deep meaning, but contain vibrant emotional undertones that will resonate with all those who have suddenly found themselves "glowing up," as the kids say these days. Tenor has exhibited all the indicators of talent and potential on his limited offerings to date, and he will hopefully deliver on them with the release of his debut EP ‘Smother’ on 12/5, whose release will be celebrated that same day at Rough Trade. —Henry Solotaroff-Webber
From the NYC submissions: Maris’s bone-chilling ambient-pop
Earlier in 2016, NYC based Belgian singer-songwriter Mariske Broeckmeyer released her bone-chilling debut album ‘On Gods And Other Things’ under the moniker Maris. The first track off the record, “How’s Things” immerses us into an astounding experimental soundscape, full of electronic details. An expansive, almost looped melody, sung with a soft, delicate expression, plays catch up with a slowly building rhythmic pattern; seemingly conflicting sonic textures somehow melt together to create a gracious, feral, ever evolving drone, at times reminiscent of Bjork’s darker compositions. The rest of the album employs samples and effects of the quirkiest variety, always faithful to some sort of avant-ambient language, which allows Mariske’s slightly foreign sounding vocals to disclose their magnetism. – Ashley Muniz

Buzz Alert: Ex Reyes bring their inspired psych-soul to Union Pool on 12.09
There’s a couple of ways that you could try to label NYC-based group Ex Reyes, but maybe the tag that really sums it up is one they’ve already laid claim to: "future nostalgia" (something similar was said of French band Air’s debut album ‘Moon Safari‘). Ex Reyes, the project of Mikey Hart (Bleachers, The Cranberries, Santigold) is a genre-bending mix of soul-psych–melding Motown vibes, Beach Boys innovation, creamy falsettos and swirling synths to create mid-60’s music from the 21st century. The sound is like a sock hop populated by robots, or maybe a reflection of Hart’s New York–a city defined by its history, but never separated from the hum of moderniztion. Check out Ex Reyes’s Do Something EP here, listen to single ‘Bad Timing below, and don’t miss the upcoming live show at Union Pool on December 9th. – Olivia Sisinni

Electro-soul NYC trio JIL plays Mercury Lounge on 12/2
Despite a number of high-profile perfomances with the likes of Pusha T and Dev Hynes, electro-RnB act JIL have kept a relatively low profile up until now. With a lack of information out there about them, the trio has let the three tracks released to date do all the talking – and they certainly have lots to "say." The band’s sound is a head-bopping mix of distorted synths and guitars, booming percussion and the soulful, pristine vocals of their anonymous singer. Latest single "All Your Words," (streaming) sounds like a dark, tempestous sea thrashing about, while unexpectedly serene vocals seem to offer safe haven above its rough waves — and a vantage point to stare at the chaos below. JIL can’t release new material soon enough. Maybe you can hear some when they take the Mercury Lounge’s stage on 12/2. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber
Buzz Alert: Satellite Mode releases single “Warm Fire Lightning,” plays Mercury on 12/2
After years spent writing songs for other acts (the technical term is "ghost-writing"), about a year ago, New Yorkers Jess Carvo and Alex Marko decided it was time to "come out:" a tragedy in Jess’s family paved new paths in the band’s direction and sound, in a way that made their songs too personal to be signed off to others. That’s how electro-pop duo Satellite Mode was born. Just a month ago they gathered all the singles released in the past year in the approproiately named ‘Singles‘ EP. Their brand new track “Warn Fire Lightning” (streaming) features undulating electronic textures set behind haunting, pop-tinged melodies. Check out the song below and come see Satellite Mode live at Mercury Lounge with Slow Sugar on December 2nd. Let’s hope there’s more to come in the near future! – Ashley Muniz
Lip Talk readies new release, plays at Baby’s All Right 12.11
Formerly known as Railbird (a band we booked at one of our CMJ shows years ago), Brooklyn’s psychedel-ectronic pop band Lip Talk released their last spellbinding EP “Ghost” two years ago, and – according to their website – has a new release coming out… last month! (Delays are not exactly rare in the record industry). The groups toured quite a bit in the fall, and supported Okkervill River at Webster Hall on October 20th. If you enjoy edgy beats, swirling synths, droning guitars, and seductive, airy vocals, make sure to take a listen to the self-title single below and catch them live at Baby’s All Right on December 11. Looking forward to the new release, whenever it may drop! – Ashley Muniz, photo by Jackie Lee Young / VICE
HIDEOUT announces sophomore LP + plays Baby’s All Right on 11.30
Following the 2014 debut album ‘Rookie’, HIDEOUT (the solo project Gabriel Rodriguez, a live guitarist for Cults) is preparing to release his sophomore full length ‘So Many Hoops/So Little Time’ in early 2017. “Doctor”, the first single off the record, initially draws attention with a cheerful electric guitar intro reminiscent of the more jangly bands from the psychedelic revival of the late ’80s. A jumpy piano keeps the mood up, although the song’s lyrics seem to tap into the negative facets of our psychological processes. Ranging sonically and lyrically from whimsical space-pop to nostalgic singer-songwriter tracks, the album’s essence is fused with the recent passing of Rodriguez’s brother. Listen to “Doctor” below and catch the band live at Baby’s All Right on November 30th at Pavo Pavo’s record release show. – Ashley Muniz
Edgy, all NYC bill at Rough Trade on 12.11: Iris Lune, Arthur Moon & Nozart
Born in Boston as the project of singer-songwriter Ella Joy Meir and guitarist and composer Asher Kurtz, Iris Lune is now a Brooklyn based quartet, and plays expansive, mellow pop with ambient influences and jazzy inclinations. In single ‘Triplets’ (video streaming below) the band utilizes atmospheric vocal samples and electric piano to create a fluid drone on which Ella’s mellow vocals float adrift. Iris Lune will be performing at Rough Trade on December 11 with two other interesting and like-minded local acts: Arthur Moon and Nozart.
Buzz Alert: Don’t miss your chance to listen to the Pressure Kid’s latest single
Initially, "You Missed Your Chance," the latest single from Nashville-based band, The Pressure Kids, sounds sweet, dance-y and instantly catchy. With soaring choruses that betray just a bit of twang, strong melodies, and flitting beats, you might almost miss the deeper lyricism lurking beneath the polished track. When you take the time to peel back to the words, the song becomes a mediation on missing chances, the melancholy that surrounds it, and the the strive to move forward and be ok. An anthem for those amid the 20-something malaise, be sure to listen to the single streaming below.-Olivia Sisinni
Kindling brings their shoegaze-y indie rock to Brighton Hall 1/18
As their name suggests, there’s definitely something incindiary about Easthampton-based band Kindling. Their songs are thick with a nasty, fuzz and feedback coating, paired against ethereal vocals that somehow manage to float above the firey instrumental whirlwind happening beneath them. Catch the band at Brighton Music Hall 1/18 playing with City of Caterpiller and The Saddest Landscape, and be sure to stream them below.-Olivia Sisinni
