Welles release video for “Life Like Mine,” and play The Knitting Factory 06.02

Posted on:

The Nashville-based Welles has released an official music video for their song, "Life Like Mine" from their debut EP, Codeine. "Life Like Mine" is an up-tempo rock tune hearkening to the ’90s sensibilities of artists like Beck and Pavement. Using 1960s music iconography to ironic effect (the band members are dressed like Sgt. Pepper’s-era Beatles and Hendrix at Monterey), Welles wonders aloud what kind of person is able to "live a life like mine," detailing scenes of destitution, substance abuse and confusion. With swelling keys, booming percussion and overdriven guitars, it’s self-aware as a rock song, even as the lyrics eschew the fabled rock n’ roll lifestyle. Welles is playing the Governor’s Ball Music Festival After Dark at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on June 2nd. Check out the video below! – Ethan Ames

Gold Dime releases debut LP, bring their noise to Sunnyvale on 6/3 for release party

Posted on:

As one half of influential noise-rock duo Talk Normal, Andrya Ambro graced the cover of The Deli Magazine’s Best of NYC 2010 Issue.  Since 2014 Andrya has been active in her own band Gold Dime, who are releasing their debut album ‘Nerves’ on Fire Talk Records. The band is sharing “All We Have To Be Thankful For” (streaming below) which is an expanded re-adaptation of British spoken-word artist Anne Clark’s 1982 original.  Amid percussive bursts of cymbals and jingly metallic strikes, forceful guitar chords establish a slow building progression.  Ambro recites the original spoken word lyrics describing frustration with simply trying to “not to make a mess of it all.”  Melodic bass lines emerge within a shifting landscape of background voices and sparse instrumentation.  Additional lyrics (not in the original) are presented before a wave of pure industrial noise which ultimately leads back to the original progression. Nerves is out on 6/3 with the band playing their release show on 6/3 at Alphaville. – Dave Cromwell

Brooklyn via New Paltz indie rockers What Moon Things will be kicking off their tour at Cape House in Brooklyn on June 1st, alongside pecas, Whiner and Abraham King. On their 2016 full-length, the SWIM Tape, Jake Harms’ ethereal falsetto is like a venus fly trap: deceptively alluring, until it clamps you in a menacing grip of disturbing imagery and unsettling notions. Crisp, psychedelic prog-rock from Baltimore’s Deaf Scene

Posted on:

Listening to Deaf Scene for the first time, one of the things I was most impressed by were the seamless transitions within the songs. The band does a great job developing themes with increasing intensity, steering clear of traditional verse-chorus structures to take listeners on a journey. Sometimes it’s easy to get listener fatigue, going through 9 separate journeys on a full length prog-rock album, but the band keeps it interesting with a pleasing blend of post-rock and psychedelic, mixing in the driving force of tracks like “Zealot” with the trippy vibes of “Sun Drops”.

Aside from the stellar songwriting, the musicianship is a real tour-de force here. Everything is so tight, clean, and well rehearsed, it’s abundantly clear that these guys really know their way around their instruments. An impressive and promising first album from Deaf Scene.

A Deli Premiere: Teddy and The Rough Riders’ new track “Goldmine”

Posted on:

Almost everyone not into mainstream country is guilty of saying that "all country music sounds the same," and the Nashville scene would be certainly found guilty in feeding that prejudice. However, Teddy and the Rough Riders are living proof that there are noble exceptions. We are premiering here their single “Goldmine,” a track that swims in twang, but also features an inventiveness in its composition and production that makes it almost Beatlesque. Drawing from a wide range of influences that include elements of psychedelic pop, Dixieland rock, and classic country crooning, Teddy and The Rough Riders have developed a sound that’s at once soothing and intriguing, rootsy but forward looking. Whatch out for their debut LP, coming out later in 2017.

KISSEY releases new video for “Unplug”

Posted on:

Born in Stockholm and based in New York, recording artist, dancer and model KISSEY is no stranger to change. During her career, she has gone from electro-soul incarnations (“Caos”) to borderline industrial ones (“I Don’t Need Anything” and “DISTORTION”). Now, she’s back with another song that doesn’t fit into a genre as neatly, confirming a laudable inclination to think outside the box. In the video for “Unplug,” (streaming below) she appears like a modern-day Beloved (she is even pictured dragging an ax in one scene) — an ethereal apparition dancing around a rural, snowy landscape. (In case you haven’t noticed, she’s got the moves!) The song itself combines the dreamy drone of earlier works with a plodding beat reminiscent of the early trip hop days. Her upcoming EP, ‘Unplug the Delusional Monkey’, will be out on June 30th with Fool’s Gold Records. – Lilly Milman
