“Fool Moon” is a disco-house dancefloor killer just dropped by mystery debutante Lovers on Brooklyn-based house label Let’s Play House. When The Deli asked about Lovers, Let’s Play House had this to say:
“He’s brand new! Well, not exactly, but he’s trying to keep his previous work separate from what he’s doing now. He’s an old friend of LPH, though, and a Brit in NYC. Used to be in a duo when he was still in London.”
As for “Fool Moon,” it’s a disco dream – ringing cowbell, stomping percussion, soulful vocals. Fun, but also piercing, trenchant, uplifting. The type of thing Larry Levan would play at Paradise Garage on a Saturday night. – juan leon
Brooklyn avant-rock group Late Sea’s new music video "Ring the Bells" is a collision of ominous visuals and orchestral textures, a cryptic narrative steeped in mystery. The music video tells the story of Jewish-Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza. Composer and vocalist Izzy Gliksberg describes Spinoza: “His story lies not only in his hermetic, esoteric, mind boggling philosophy, but also in his expelling from his community and what he suffered from being faithful to his thoughts and dreams.” The stunning cinematography of "Ring the Bells" is no less than brain-teasing and perplexing, and paired with the gorgeous, simple horn and string arrangements, the video is beautifully captivating. – Geena Kloeppel
We’re finally at that point in our relationship with Wiki that he’s starting to let us in. Where in Ratking, he and Hak bewitched us with visceral depictions of graffiti and skateboarding life from Harlem to Coney, now he’s solo and waxing philosophic. In No Mountains in Manhattan, Wiki tells us how he really feels about everything from publicists to systemic racism. He’s never preachy, and his flow is that perfect meld of NYC street style and afro-futurism. The premier video “Mayor” shows him campaigning the streets dispersing “WIKI for Mayor” stickers while he asserts his indelible connection to his NYC fam. Whether he wins against the incumbent or not, he certainly reigns supreme over the world he creates for us with his expert rhymes.
There is nothing small about God Tiny‘s sound: the Brooklyn-based psych/garage rockers serve up frenetic, down-and-dirty rock action, and their new video for single, "Awaken," perfectly deliver that action and that dirt on a visual level. The black-and-white work features a female protagonist, roaming the streets and taking names and is chocks full of the vintage vibes, visceral kicks and (literal) punches that we’ve come to love from the band. The clip is a real treat, and seeing such a gutsy, raw, and fun visual accompaniment to God Tiny’s music is something we never knew we needed, but we’re not sure if we could now live without. Check out "Awaken" streaming below, and catch the band live at The Mercury Lounge (where we’re sure they’ll be taking some names of their own) on 9/23. – Olivia Sisinni
Electronic producer Flamingosis released his latest album, A Groovy Thing last month, a lush and exciting record that has the potential to please a wide range of ears, full of mellow nu-jazz influences, bossanova vibes, ultra-funky dance tracks, and pristine beats. Throughout the album, Flamingosis delivers quality samples, arrangements and grooves, as heard on the second track, "don’t lose the feeling" (streaming below), which showcases his knack for cosmic funk. Featuring appearances from local artist Birocratic and other electronic producers like Mtbrd and Stereocool, the album has "summer party" written all over it – so you better give it a spin before September 22nd! You can listen to it here. Don’t miss the live performance at Brooklyn Steel on November 24. – Tafari Lemma
Life’s A Garden and Soil It are the commanding titles of NYC-based Worthless’ latest album and opening track. In this coy contradiction, Worthless introduces us to the play of their extreme, vintage sounding, "scary-clown" inspired psychedelia. With fun-house organs, clattering mallets, and the occasional whiny vocal harmonies, the band embraces anything strange and confusing. After nine album releases on their stacked bandcamp, another record full of ideas and experimentation, entitled "Barrel of Barrows" is set for an October 6th release on label Beyond Beyond is Beyond. Their name maybe be worthless, but their repertoire of music speaks otherwise.
The annual Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival (BEMF) will take place from October 12th to the 14th at Output, Music Hall of Williamsburg, House of Yes, and many other Brooklyn venues. They’ll be bringing a range of house, electronica, and ambient vibes. Check out a playlist of the NYC-based artists playing BEMF playlist below! – Pearse Devlin

We have an intriguing two-song demo to share with you guys released back in April from SF’s Dark Satellite. The post-rock demo begins with a brilliant incorporation of Charlie Chaplin’s iconic speech from The Great Dictator, fusing it with hardcore noise-rock buildup, ultimately unleashing into "La Valette", a mostly instrumental track with screechy math and post-hardcore influences. Check out the band’s work below and keep an eye out for upcoming shows. The band recently also unveiled a video for track "A Star is Dying" – watch it here.- Pearse Devlin
Bronx-born, Kansas-bred, Brooklyn-living Emma Olson (aka UMFANG) will be closing out the main stage this coming Saturday at Sustain-Release in Upstate New York. It’s the fourth edition of the festival, which takes place at Camp Kennybrook, and features a wide swathe of underground NYC and global artists. Techno is well represented at Sustain-Release this year and UMFANG — co-founder of NYC collective DISCWOMAN — is a worthy representative to top off a 12-plus hour main-stage marathon of the dreamy, the soft, and the hard, but above all, the electronic. UMFANG’s latest release, Symbolic Use of Light, debuted via Technicolour Recordings (a Ninja Tune imprint) in June of this year.
Symbolic Use of Light offers a conceptual balance of heavy and soft. Track titles like "Full 1," "Full 2," and "Weight" share space with "Sweep," and "Wingless Victory." The ideas cohere wonderfully within UMFANG’s at times aggressive, at times tender sonic landscape. Nowhere is this more striking and thrilling than in the one-two punch transition of "Path" immediately followed by "Pop." By contrasting the lightness of the one with the power of the other — like showing off two sides of the soul — Olson gets at something undeniably human. -juan leon
Bootblacks offer a gothic melancholia bounced back and forth on synth-pop beats, a menacing vision of gloom that’s infectious. Bootblacks’ post-punk/new-wave sensibility is beautifully paired with Panther Macdonald’s vocals. They’re straight out of the post-punk catalogue: romantic, dramatic, seductive. The band promises a seedier vision of NYC, one of decadence and decay. Their newest work offers a more sophisticated sonic aesthetic, so make sure to check out their new album “Fragments” from (appropriately named, for this release) Manic Depression Records, available 09.14. —Amanda Ogea
Boston rockers Healing Cow boast a catalog of different musical styles in their debut, ANGELA, meshing lo-fi garage with smoother indie vibes. The opener, “High School Luv Song,” is a fun garage rock number, but sounds completely different from the following tracks “Washed” and “The Gilded Cunt”, which feature a more sedated approach in part reminiscent of ’90s lo-fi bands like Ween, but definitely less humorous. Reverbered guitars, calm percussion, and softer female vocals actually create a borderline loungy atmosphere. An interlude transitions the EP back to the initial frantic feel with “Carpetsoft”, ultimately finishing off with “Angelina Jolie”, a funny and quick garage pop-punk track wrapping up the record. The band will be coming back from a string of summer shows with a performance at O’Brien’s Pub in Boston this September 18th, check out the band’s work below! – Pearse Devlin
