Alt folk artist Cape Francis celebrates debut release at Mercury on 09.22

Posted on:

Cape Francis is the solo-project of Kevin Olken Henthorn and features music that neatly fits into a self-made nexus of indie folk/rock/pop and “post” iterations of each. Cape Francis is able to oscillate between slow, melancholic elegies for what is lost (“Iditarod”) and heart-felt indie anthems (“5 in the Morning”). Regardless of presentation, Cape Francis skillfully evokes Northeastern wistful angst. His debut album “Falling into Pieces” is out September 22nd, and NYC’s Mercury Lounge will be hosting the release show on September 29th. – Amanda Ogea

Bedroom poppers Teenender play Great Scott 9/28

Posted on:

Boston band Teenender is a long missed dose of young heartbreak, just like their name suggests. Although their sound is definitely reminiscent of 80’s synth-pop groups as well as indie counterparts from this generation (The 1975, Bad Suns, Haim), they manage to sound quite like no one else. On their sweet four-track EP called Kissed, they deliver pop songs with sentiments that aren’t far from mainstream boy bands, but come across as completely honest. Maybe it’s because there are so few like them in the scene, but Teenender definitely has a certain charm that makes their fun pop sound a necessary summer throwback. – Allie Miller

Discwoman Collective’s Bearcat plays Fringe Arts 09.22

Posted on:

Discwoman collective artist Bearcat’s wild, aggressive sampling of divergent styles and rhythms (from dembow to spoken word) in her work as producer and DJ is a mode of expression so potent and unique it feels like a sonic diaspora. As a DJ, and like all great djs, her mixes aren’t simply beats mixed into other beats with the aim of getting asses on the dance floor. Rather, Bearcat expertly uses transitions and rhythms to achieve a fierce personal expression. The moment on her Chromat FW16 Runway Mix when a sample of a woman’s voice continues to repeat "a girl’s success…lies between her legs" while a pounding backbeat counters in the background is a thrilling example of how Bearcat uses beats to subvert, to provoke thought, and to transcend. She plays at Fringe Arts in Philly on September 22. -juan leon

Shilpa Ray celebrates LP release show at Pianos 09.20 & 09.21

Posted on:

Within the The Deli’s archives we commended Shilpa Ray several times — lauding her noir music, stubborn-yet-honest lyrics, and unapologetic delivery — but her newest work is doing more than that. Though her new September LP isn’t out yet, she gives us a glimpse of what’s to come with new single, “EMT Police and the Fire Department”. This song is one of a dystopian Lower East Side, so abject it requires the EMT, police, and the fire department to be called. "The air was so thick, you cut it with a knife, and the crowds were so thick, it would make you wanna cut them with a knife" she recants through spoken word over what resembles a sound check. The story’s setting degrades as the song shapes together, and she repeats the title over a building drumbeat, ultimately exploding unlike anything we’ve seen from her — her jarring lyricism taking on the shape of a new beast delivered through ferocious yelps. This is as unforgiving as Ray has ever gotten. Door Girl, the upcoming LP, is inspired by her time working at Pianos; it’s only fitting her album release will be celebrated there two nights in a row, this coming September 20th and 21st. – Pearse Devlin

Morgan Delt talks about gear on Delicious Audio

Posted on:

LA-based Morgan Delt crafts acid-tinged tracks that are meant to be seen with your third eye. His music is blissful and hazy, with his soft vocals stretching across lush, textured instrumentals and sweet melodies. With such an expansive sound, our friends at Delicious Audio were curious about the kind of gear that goes into the making of his music, and Morgan was kind enough to share a bit about the equipment he uses on his latest record, Phase Zero, out on Sub-Pop Records. Read the Q&A here. – Olivia Sisinni

Darkwing – Lameonia – a 2015 EP worth looking back on

Posted on:

We recently stumbled upon music by New Jersey’s Darkwing, a post-grunge band from Leonia. Their 2015 EP, revealingly titled ‘Lameonia,’ is a fun, fast-paced record filled with fast paced rock’n’roll anthems. The distorted sound of the guitars, vocals, and drums (like on the opening track “201 Carousel,” streaming below) would make it a perfect soundtrack for a Tony Hawk game. The nostalgic late ’90s early ’00s sound is distingushed by solid songwriting chops and an attitude that, refreshingly, is not that slacking. Check out the EP below and keep an eye on their live schedule. – Pearse Devlin

Yohuna to open Alphaville show with Told Slant, Hovvdy September 23rd

Posted on:

Yohuna is a one person electronic project by NYC-based Johanne Swanson that walks the line between airy synthpop, bedroom pop and ambient music. Her 2016 release is her fourth since 2011; appropriately entitled ‘Patientness,’ the record rewards those who persevere and are not in a rush. Her intimate sounding vocals at times feature brutally honest lyrics, always delivered with a deadpan attitude at times reminiscent of Nico. Yohuna will be performing like at Alphaville on September 23rd. -Allie Miller

Blame Candy play Knitting Factory September 20th

Posted on:

With a track that will literally explode through your speaker, Blame Candy takes all the appeal of Neon Trees and brings it into 2017. A band catchy enough to be on the radio, Blame Candy deliver plenty of memorable melodies peppered with oohs aahs.  This is pure pop’n’roll, with added in some heart strung lyrics and hooky electric guitars. You can catch them at Our Wicked Lady on Wednesday, September 20th. – Allie Miller

Sapphogeist releases ‘Mar-a-Lago’ album on BANK Records NYC

Posted on:

Brooklyn-based Sapphogeist’s "Mar-a-Logo" (released on BANK Records NYC) is a dreamy, evocative, and potent shout of electronica that transcends the obvious political allusion in the record’s title. Standout track “Holding On” anchors an album chock full of sensuous and hazy sonic mysteries. It’s like a trip through the maze of a real pumping heart — translucent and bloody. Comparisons to Purity Ring and maybe Grimes might come easy, but are merely superficial. The grittiness of “Exodus,” the daring of the funeral march dirge-like “Mar-a-Logo” prove that what Sapphogeist is doing and has achieved is fascinatingly singular. -juan leon

Annie Hart releases solo album, plays two NYC shows on 9/15 and 9/25

Posted on:

Already known for her decade long activity in dreamy electronic three piece ensemble Au Revoir Simone, Annie Hart releases her first solo album Impossible Accomplice today. Self-recorded in true DIY basement style (with one of Fred Armisen’s rooms serving as the only other tracking location during a brief stay in Portland) first single and video "Hard To Be Still" (streaming below) celebrates oscilloscopes and devoted love. Heavy on deep bass synths, the chorus “you gave me what I want” and “I’ll never give you up” is an instant earworm. The video is simple, managing at once to be stilish and humorous – it even features a revealing "outtakes" section at the end that reveals how the DIY approach extended to the shooting process, not only the recording one. Catch Annie live on 9/15 at Main Drag Music (a free event featuring live keyboard looping and vibraphone, celebrating the record release), and supporting Matt Pond PA and Wild Pink on 9/25 at Brooklyn Night Bazaar. – Dave Cromwell

Oliver Ignatius shares video for “Light and Dark”

Posted on:

In his debut single "Light and Dark," Oliver Ignatius taps into an unlikely but interesting combination of sounds: crunchy guitar solos, soaring synths, a blasting horn section, and dreamy laid-back, Queen-esque vocals. We can’t tell you why it works, exactly, but it does. Perhaps it’s Ignatius’ immaculate grasp of melody and placement of harmonies throughout that weaves all of these elements together into a funky, groovin’, garage-y track. The founder and spiritual leader of Bushwick’s DIY studio/label Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen sure is onto something- and it definitely does feel like something a little higher. Check out the track’s video, streaming below. – Geena Kloeppel
