It seems like we have been talking about California Wives and the release of the new album Art History for months and we have, but this is the week! The album dropped digitally last week, but the band is playing their release show at Lincoln Hall on Sept 12th with Santah and Deserters. The band will be heading out on a national tour later this month.
The band recently teamed up with Sharpie to create a video for their track "Purple".
With his new album Total Loss dropping on the 18th, Tom Krell (aka How To Dress Well) is beginning to release bits and pieces of this tremendous project. Today he premiered the track " & It Was U" via NPR, and earlier this month he released a cover of Janet Jackson’s "Again".
Another New Calligraphy has released the latest effort from A Light Sleeper, Concision. The experimental three track ep builds both stylistically and in tone on their March 2012 release Brevity. The release comes in a handmade package with mini-book and you would expect nothing less from a the artistic local label.

These two songs will also be available on their upcoming debut full-length album scheduled for release later this year. Brother George released their debut full-length album, Big Piney, last month. This is the indie rock band’s follow-up to their February ep, Piney. The band has a clean and catchy sound that will take them far. The band recently performed the addictive lead track from their album, "So Many Arms to Hold Me" at Threadless.

California Wives are now offering the new album Art History for free stream via soundcloud. The album drops September 4th on Vagrant. A video for the album’s lead single "Purple" will appear on Sept. 6th and premiere during the MTV VMAs.

If alternative soul is a thing than Cole DeGenova is at the center of that thing. Cole released his new album Another Country this week and will bring his band The Peoples Republic to Lincoln Hall tomorrow, Aug 30th. This is his second album and it combines elements of funk, soul, and jazz. It is a solid blend of tight grooves and soulful melodies. A good example of this sound is the album’s lead track, "Those Kids".
Eiren Caffall is an amazing double threat as both a writer and a musician. She has released a preview of her upcoming full-length album, Slipping the Holdfast. The album is planned for 2013, but you can hear the first single, "Burdensome And Rich" along with "The Storm" and a essay podcast version of "The Storm" at her bandcamp page.

It’s one year in the making, but Supreme Cuts have released their project with Haleek Maul, Chrome Lips. With Maul’s hyper, yet smooth flow over the Chicago duo’s dark and creeping beats is a match made in the ether. This may be one of the best mixtapes of 2012.
