Andrew Belle @ SPACE

Posted on:

Andrew Belle’s debut LP The Ladder was released back in 2010, and since that time each track has been featured somehow or somewhere in film or television. From "In My Veins" to "Static Waves" to "Open Your Eyes", the album was extremely well received. The downside to that is the challenge of following that up. On Feb. 28th Belle is releasing his follow-up EP, The Daylight. It is a three song ep and below you can see how excited Belle is about this release.

You can catch Andrew Belle at SPACE in Evanston on Feb. 14th.

CD of The Month: Hidden Hosptials

Posted on:

These days Hidden Hospitals are anything but while they the kick the promotion for their debut ep "EP 001" in overdrive. The band, containing former members of Damiera and Kiss Kiss, brings a crisp and effective brand of rock oozing with blaring guitars and driving baselines. The band’s first single "Swan Dive" is a soaring anthem that has turned more than a few heads. The four piece band is guided by the wide range in the vocals of David Raymond. His vocals shift effortlessly from hush swoon to forcefully scream through the ep. For a band that only played their first live show in September of last year, "EP 001" is an extremely polished effort.

You can catch Hidden Hospitals at Panchos on Feb 3 with Channel Four, Black Arrow, and Dari.

Kellen & Me released his self-titled debut album back in June and it was also the debut release on Audiotree Music. The album is Americana at its core, and is a pure illustration of what music means to this musician named Kellen. Below you can stream the album and jump over to bandcamp to purchase it.

On an East Coast tour this past year Kellen stopped by Indie Ambassador to record a live session. You can catch Kellen & Me at Abbey Pub with Jennifer Hall and Ode on Feb. 16th.

Without Waves @ Cobra Lounge

Posted on:

Back in November experimental rocker Without Waves unleashed the fury that is Scab Platter. The album is hard, aggressive, shredding, but also subtly nuanced and adventurous. This is album to put on when you need to get out that built up aggression, and if you are not sure what you are screaming about the lyrics to each track are on their bandcamp page.

You can witness the rage in person at Cobra Lounge on Feb. 3rd.

MH “Year of the Indian”

Posted on:

MH has released a new full length album called Year of the Indian. The album is a beautiful mix of experimental folk and instrumental journeys. This is the follow-up to last years Black Animal, and it builds beautifully of that solid release. My favorite track on the new album is "Surface Energy". It is subtle, gentle, but builds in a way that is undeniable.

I don’t know a lot about MH, but I enjoy his campfire melodies and I am sure there are more to come.

The Elkcloner

Posted on:

The Elkcloner is the wacky and frantic work of New York’s Filip Mitrovic. On his debut album he has enlisted the talent Chicago-based jazz vocalist Rose Colella to add some steady rhythm and beauty to what he has created. The result is unique and nearly indescribable. It’s is really the essence of beauty in chaos, and somehow it works.

The Elkcloner’s self-titled debut will be released digitally on February 28th.

Wild Belle is Natalie Bergman and Elliot Bergman of NOMO. They are branching our this year and preparing to release their first single, "Keep You", on Feb. 21st. The track is reggae-filled pop with Natalie’s sultry croon over the top. It doesn’t scream Chicago winter, but it might take you away to another place and time.

Jane & The Pretty Pleases @ The Hideout

Posted on:

Jane Thatcher is the gripping voice behind the haunting folk sound of Jane & The Pretty Pleases. In the trio she is back perfectly by piano (Michael James Brooks of Common Shiner) and cello (Ira Ochs), and when combined with her guitar the result is gorgeously somber. The trio recently released an ep that was recorded live in the basement of a Chicago home.

Jane & The Pretty Pleases are performing on Jan. 26th at The Hideout with Machine Gun Mojo and Liza Day.
