SXSW Presents: Shubzilla x Bill Beats

Posted on:

The Pacific Northwest may not be known as a hub for hip-hop, but by all means its residents know that through all of rain drops there are some great artists writing some great rhymes. Some of those rhymes come spunky lyricist Shubzilla, back by some funky production of her collaborator Bill Beats.

It’s been some years since Shubzilla and Bill Beats began working together, and over the course of the six years since The Campaign Mixtape came out their collective efforts have grown even more esteemed and enjoyable. Shubzilla prides herself in writing about whatever the hell she chooses to and somehow, Bill Beats always has the perfect measures to accommodate. Their performances are energetic, fun and enthralling and once they’re finished, you’ll leave feeling like you just partied with your friends.

Though SXSW is already one of the biggest parties of the year, consider stopping and checking Shubzilla and Bill Beats. They’ll be some of the most entertaining yet.

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Dominy

Posted on:

With so much focus on the presidency these days, is it time for a concept album about our 22nd & 24th president, Grover Cleveland? Dominy mastermind John Dominy certainly thinks so, and what we do know is that John’s family will certainly be behind this truly original idea, as they have always been in regards to his musical endeavors. The band, which is also made up of his brother Alex (on keys), cousin Michael Youngkin (on guitar), and childhood pal Zakary Iannitelli (on drums), is getting ready to return to the studio next month to flesh out the ambitious concept. And while we wait to hear the life of Grover Cleveland come to fruition in song, you can learn more about Dominy, our recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner, HERE!

Odetta Hartman brings experimental folk to SXSW on 3/17

Posted on:

NYC chanteuse Odetta Hartman is more experimental than most, and in an endearing way, as demonstrated in the music video for her song "Dreamcatchers." It’s a compilation of home videos of Hartman as a little girl, doing various things such as playing the violin, swimming, and hitting a piñata, but the video is edited to move with the music, with a hazy, acid-trip-like manner. The songs on her last record 222 are short, sweet vignettes, led by banjo and textural vocals, infused with pentatonic guitars and experimental strings. Odetta Hartman will play at SXSW at the Townsend on 3/17. –Geena Kloeppel

SXSW Presents: Thunderpussy

Posted on:

For the longest time, rock and roll was a genre dominated by dick. Men have used their braggadocious sense of entitlement act like big guitars and big hair to try and rule the music world, but rock was never meant to be a male dominated arena. Quite the contrary, actually. Continuing to plant their feet in unwelcomed territory like all of the great ladies before them Thunderpussy have grabbed rock by its reins, and they’re not letting go anytime soon.

There are plenty of non-male acts in punk, garage and indie, but when it comes to the unapologetically barebones element of rock, there was a hole that Thunderpussy perfectly filled. They’re brash in a sexy way, unfettered by whatever "roles" society tells them they need to play. Instead, they play some of the most in-your-face, raw and fierce tunes around. Combined with the power they release onstage, Thunderpussy is the kind of force that you want to overcome you.

Catch Thunderpussy on their Pour Morals Tour starting in March (which includes four SXSW dates) and lend an ear to their newly released and amazingly named record Greatest Tits below.

Low Hum shares video for Nebraska, celebrates EP release at Moroccan Lounge on 2/28

Posted on:

Low Hum is full of longing and reflection on "Nebraska." An even-tempered, mid-tempo beat follows songwriter Collin Desha as he goes for a late-night walk around the city on the video for the track. He thinks vividly about a special person who consumes his thoughts as a smoothed-out, psychedelic-informed rhythm contributes to his delirium. Desha leaves an air of suspension as it leads into its final moments, where we’re lead to believe that he’s found what he’s seeking, only to realize that it’s just an illusion.

"Nebraska" is the lead-off track off of Low Hum’s self-titled debut EP, which was just released last Friday. Get lost with Desha as he celebrates his EP release at Moroccan Lounge on Wednesday, February 28. Juan Rodríguez

SXSW Presents: Naked Giants

In a place that doesn’t see a lot of sun, anything that’s recalls warm beaches, endless sunshine and running around outside is definitely appreciated. Naked Giants encompass this aesthetic in their sound, bringing the styles of a brighter region all the up to the romantically dreary Pacific Northwest.

The trio, having popped up onto to scene not even that long ago, make fun and youthfully jaunty garage rock that no matter how old you are, make you feel like you’re in your early 20s again. Naked Giants have dropped a few collections of songs over the last three years of their new but bright career, but their upcoming full-length debut Sluff shows them at their most energetic and excited yet. Exactly what "sluff" is depends on who you’re talking to, but whether it stands for "South Lake Union Fuck Face" (which references the techies taking over Seattle) or the black sludge that comes off your shoes in the snow, the one thing that is for sure is spark is infectious, sluffy or not, and it’ll make you want to bounce around whenever you see them.

Assassin of Youth reconstruct shoegaze on newest EP

Posted on:

The small indie tape label New Perfume Records out of Boston have a knack for finding compelling underground artists with little to no online presence (David Poole and Afraid of Storms to name a couple). The newest release from Saguiv Rosenstock, the shoegaze weirdo behind Assassin of Youth, is the most recent example of New Perfume gold. A MYSTERIOUS HUM… WHERE IS IT FROM? is the newest release by Assassin of Youth, a four track EP that challenges the shoegaze status quo by incorporating elements of fast punk and cheeky humor into the typically vast and bleak atmosphere of the genre. A MYSTERIOUS HUM is a nod to contemporary noise rock melody makers like DIIV and Beach Fossils, while maintaining the innate weirdness of the Boston underground scene. Post-Punk Takes Over Green Noise Tonight

Posted on:

Ritual Veil have been pretty inescapable since they hit the scene, and for good reason. The post-punk/sex beat trio’s debut EP Wolf In The Night hasn’t lost momentum since its release in late summer of last year, likely due to its refreshing yet stylistically pure spin on old school goth and new wave. Ritual Veil’s beats, sensual synths and smooth croons are addicting and mesmerizing to watch.

There’s a chance to catch Ritual Veil doing an early set tonight at Green Noise Records. Sharing the stage with them is newer anarcho-deathwave quartet Over and the synthesized experimental sounds of Xibling. It’s free, all ages, and an intimate way to be enticed by these three acts in one setting. Space will be incredibly limited, so if you want to catch peeks it’s best to get there early. In the mean time, get lost in Ritual Veil’s video for "Wolf In The Night" below.

Animal Flag frontman Matthew Politoski releases sprawling solo album

Posted on:

Matthew Politoski, frontman of the beloved Boston indie rock group Animal Flag, has released a sprawling instrumental solo album titled 8 Emanations, his first in over two years. The instrumental drones on 8 Emanations are entirely devoid of lyricism, or melody for that matter, and instead focus on ethereal and enveloping soundscapes, built using various acoustic and electronic instruments. Politoski’s newest work draws on influences ranging from European electronica and witch house music, displaying intuitive structures to darkly emotive and deeply stirring harmonic movements. The result is an incredibly warm and strangely inviting body of work that will take any Animal Flag fan by surprise. Stream and purchase 8 Emanations below, where all the proceeds will be donated to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. -Charley Ruddell

Pink Navel spits heady tongue twisters on “Raw Navel”

Posted on:

Although Pink Navel, the solo project of smooth poet Devin Bee, released his full length album Raw Navel over a year ago, the rapper/beatmaker deserves some current recognition. Bee’s particular brand of oddball hip-hop is heavily driven by a stream-of-conscious and absurdist flow of spoken word poetry, highlighted by crunchy lofi beats swaddled in background noise and quirky synth patches. Bee’s poetic content bares a stark similarity to Mike Doughty’s, the mythic voice behind cult group Soul Coughing, while his delivery resembles the smooth confidence of 2000s alt-hip groups like Aesop Rock and Blue Scholars. Raw Navel, in all of its warped obscurity, is a clever and compelling release, and a much needed breath of life in New England’s alternative hip hop scene. You can stream Raw Navel below. -Charley Ruddell

Erica Eso Drops Art-Pop Single and Video from Upcoming “129 Dreamless GMG”

Posted on:

Erica Eso is an art-pop experiment in genre.  Seductive RNB vocals melt into dream-pop soundscapes, powered by shocks of synthy discord. The music is curious but compelling. Their newly released single, “Love-gun,” feels like a slow, surreal seduction (a feeling thoroughly replicated in its accompanying music video) while the album’s eponymous single “129 Dreamless GMG” is a flurry of microtonality. Erica Eso promises to entertain listeners with further collapses in genre with the rest of 129 Dreamless GMG, which will have its release party at Alphaville, 03.15. —Amanda Ogea
