Fovea release debut LP “pencil me in” on 12.8

Posted on:

Four-piece Fovea release their debut LP pencil me in on December 8th under the boutique label Omad. The group – made up of Skidmore grads Steve Shaw, Max Weigel, Jake Denicola, and Halley Furlong-Mitchell – have a sound that they describe as "dancey dream pop", which falls somewhere between Ra Ra Riot and M83. You can hear that sound in motion on "Cost Of", one of the twelve tracks on pencil me in, as well as at their show with Woolly Mammals and Ritual Talk on November 25th at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. Check out "Cost Of" below. – Will Sisskind

New Jo Kusy LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Check out the cover for The Amazing Jumpin’ Jo Kusy! Does it cause you to wonder what makes Jo Kusy so "amazing" and "jumpin’"? Drugs? Or maybe it’s his knack for making playfully uninhibited, garage-psych tunes. The prolific Philly songwriter continues to churn out hypnotically odd yet groovy creations on his most recent album and fifth release of 2017. We have confidence that he just might have one more in him before the year is out – perhaps two if the winter chill comes soon and traps him inside. Until then, enjoy his latest below!

Mood Music: The Hague – “Globes”

Posted on:

There’s been a bit of a resurgence in emo in the last couple of years, but there’s one band that’s been holding it down the whole time. The Hague have almost a whole decade under their belt of mixing emotive styles with indie and at times, a little alt-folk, and they’ve released a new 7" showing they’ve still got Portland emo locked.

"Globes" is the second track on The Hague’s 7". The band spent two years writing the tracks on the record, using a series of rough occurrences for the band’s members as inspiration.

“This record is about the inevitability of change,” says drummer Jesse Tranfo. “It’s about knowing that the band won’t always be a band, and most friendships won’t last, and knowing that that is truth. At the same time, it’s about fighting that, and wanting to believe in the good things currently happening, wanting to hold on to those close to us, and wanting to be more present in what we’re doing."

Tall Juan premieres Ramones cover video, performs at Puerto Rico benefit 11.05

Posted on:

Maybe you’ve been thinking “wow, there are a lot of bad things going on in the world right now—like the hurricane damage to Puerto Rico—I wish I could do something about it.” Or maybe you’ve been thinking “what my life needs is a band that sounds like The Ramones, but isn’t The Ramones, and maybe features acoustic guitar and occasional Spanish.” Either way you should probably be watching Tall Juan at the Que Lio! Fundraiser show for Puerto Rico on November 5th.

Sometimes it’s just hard to figure out how to do good and contribute to a cause, but being part of a benefit makes it easy. Sometimes it’s just hard to listen to The Ramones—actually, no it’s not, if you feel like it’s hard to listen to The Ramones I cannot offer sincere understanding… But that’s beside the point. Tall Juan’s Joey Ramone-esque vocal delivery and incessantly bopping rhythms clearly pay tribute to the early NYC rebels, but there’s also a garage rock, almost lo-fi sensibility to his taste and style (Mac DeMarco recorded his debut album). It’s a sound true to New York from The Ramones, to The Strokes, to that band you saw a couple weeks ago in Brooklyn that sounded way better live than on Bandcamp.

Below, you can watch his new video for “Time Bomb”—a Ramones cover that sounds even more Ramonesque than the original—featuring shirtless Tall Juan, skateboards, and hip little dance moves. And don’t forget to stop by the Que Lio! fundraiser at Baby’s All Right. It’s a donation-based daytime show (12-4 p.m.) on a Sunday, so no excuses. – Cameron Carr, photo by Audrey Del Piccolo.

Resonant Frequency Are the Funk Lords That Austin Needs

Posted on:

Having met at show where they were all performing as solo acts, Resonant Frequency has an aura of destiny about them. The trio of comprehensively talented musicians seem to defy a singular genre, and instead they choose to emit a myriad of styles, influences, and vibes. The overarching hypothesis of Resonant Frequency is to get down and have a good time – which they seem to do in spades, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. In the last few months, the trio has played Euphoria Fest, Float Fest, and opened for Pretty Lights – a run that is enviable by any local Austin band and evidences their mass appeal to crowds. Their third studio EP, Honey Dippin’, is a funk-laden oddysey that is as entrancing as it is explorative. The true value in Resonant Frequency is found in their live show of which their next show will be November 19, at Empire Control Room’s 4 Year Funkiversary.

Weekend Warrior, November 3 – 5

Posted on:

Tonight, Johnny Brenda’s will be hosting melodic punk outfit Worriers. Commemorating its freshly issued album, Survival Pop, which is now available via SideOneDummy, the band captures a reflective, rambunctious, magnetizing current. Developing transferable narratives whose loose, focused build reaches undeniably momentous ends, these songs strike a nerve as one plants oneself in the midst of the storylines, letting the plot play out.  Reevaluating flashbacks with future projections and the in-between (now), Lauren Denitzio and company push forward, producing a consistently adapting perspective that imparts an emotive recognition, reconciling with the causes of conflicts and embracing the points of positivity. Worriers will be supported this evening by the kindred spirit of Thin Lips and the harmonious, open-book powerpop of Katie Ellen. – Michael Colavita

Margo Price has solidified her place in the country landscape

Posted on:

Nashville’s Margo Price exploded onto the scene last year with her debut Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, a country record that shared more in common with the 1960s styles of legends like Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson than anything in the country market today. Just last month, Price released her sophomore effort All American Made to nationwide critical acclaim. From duet ballads with the aforementioned Nelson to tackling issues like the pay gap between men and women in America, Price has crafted one of the top country albums of the year, and one that only solidifies her place in the changing country landscape. – Chris Thiessen

Lillet Blanc brings Dream-Pop to Trans Pecos, 11.03

Posted on:

Lillet Blanc’s music takes a hint from their namesake: both are intoxicatingly sweet, yet refreshing. The band’s execution of the dream-pop aesthetic showcases honeyed melodies, boasting Emily Rawlings’ vocals whirling through a backdrop of groovy pop stylings, and cutting through the sonic daydream with beautifully pure high notes. Thankfully, the band’s “moody songs with a lil’ sass” avoid falling into an excess of saccharine by featuring near-sinister lyrics that give them a unique edge. For a taste of something special, check out Lillet Blanc at Trans-Pecos, tonight (11.03). —Amanda Ogea

New DARK MTNS Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

DARK MTNS, a.k.a. the tandem of Zack Robbins and Josh Mackie, has a new album, Up Above This Cloud, out now via Dub Sum. Grounded in harmony-stitched melodies, the collection of songs projects an effervescent glow. However, one can pull back that folk surface to reveal a murkier, hard-churning sense of complex and, at times, chaotic terrain. Wade into its reassuring, shoegaze-y waters.

No Honeymoon release new EP and plays Trans Pecos on 11/10

Posted on:

It’s been two years since Brooklyn dreamgaze collective No Honeymoon released their excellent sophomore EP “Together Alone” (reviewed on The Deli here).  The long wait for new material is now over with two tracks currently available as a preview of their latest EP “It’s Whatever.”  Recent single release “Were Doing Fine” shows the band stepping back from their previous, heavier shoegazey guitars, opting instead for a cleaner sound that helps highlight an heart-tugging melody and emotive vocal performance.  Newer cut “Don’t Want To” (streaming below) brings that weightier force back, while introducing what sounds like an organ behind the verses, with the vocal performance of Cait Smith reminiscing, at times, of The Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan.  The unexpected tempo shift occurring a third of the way through slows things down to a more deliberate, buzzy and distorted sonic resolution.  You can preorder the EP now, with the band playing a show the night of its release at Trans Pecos on 11/10. The trio of Weller recently shared its self-titled debut LP, which was produced by Jake Ewald (Modern Baseball, Slaughter Beach, Dog). Songwriting, soaked in emotive sincerity, forges a natural bond. Braiding heart-panging relatability with an upbeat energy, these songs make one feel less alone and hopeful of breaking through the fear. After touring for the better part of the last month, Weller will be returning home this Saturday, November 4 at JJ’s Diner for the band’s record release celebration that will also include Three Man Cannon, Allegra, and Beach Bod.
