Artists on the rise: Lily Konigsberg goes pop + plays Union Pool on 04.05

Posted on:

We covered Brooklyn musician Lily Konigsberg’s music before, since she is involved with art punk (bordering on no wave) trio Palberta. However, considering that band’s strictly electric/percussive sound, we hadn’t realized Lily had released several solo electronic records. In 2016 she released two records outside Palberta, one uder the moniker Lily and the Horn Horse and the kawai that claps‘ EP under her own name. The former is a collaboration with Matt Norman (aka Horn Horse), and sounds like an eccentric pastiche of jazz and DIY experimental madness. The solo EP, on the other hand, abandons the extreme edges of her previous discography for a poppier approach, although without betraying her signature quirkiness and DIY approach. The record also introduces us to the gentle version of her voice, something miles apart from Palberta’s grunts, and to a songwriter with a noteworthy talent for catchy melodies. You can check out Lily’s avant pop at Union Pool on April 5th.

New Teef Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Singles, the latest collection of tracks from Teef, echoes another era, with beats centered on a combination of keys and patterned, percussive grooves. It’s that relaxed, sitting back in the pocket, before flowing free with a smooth air that locks things down. However, that chill state can quickly ramp up, switching the musical plot into suspenseful drama. Teef will be laying it down at Connie’s Ric Rac on Thursday, March 30, as part of the Biz Mighty Variety Show.

Kill Alters bring their mind-melding avant-noise to Union Pool 4/08

Posted on:

Introducing an EP with a 12 second recording of the infamous Casio demo tune is definitely an unconvential choice, but Kill Altars is far from being a conventional band. Their latest release, no self help is driven by thick, primative tom-toms, and features the intesection of fuzz and noise, colliding against half-sung vocals that sound as if they’re edging closer and closer toward a total mental meltdown. The release is a trippy, psych/noise freakout daring you to push it over the edge. Take a listen to the EP below, but behold the band live for yourselves at Union Pool 4/8.-Olivia Sisinni

Dabble venture off into inner space in new video for “Caramelized”

Posted on:

A bossa nova arrangement is the centerpiece of Dabble’s latest single "Caramelized", a steady anchor that keeps the tone lighthearted and breezy even when it seems as if they’re about to venture into unknown realms. Accompanied by a stellar promo cut that pieces together the band’s fascination with extraterrestrial life, it sets the mood perfectly with a gentle and seductive rhythmic pattern that flutters about as it incorporates filmy psychedelic elements. It’s a entrancing statement that inspires both inner contemplation and freewheeling independence.

"Caramelized" is the second single off of Dabble’s upcoming full-length Touch, which is out on April 18.

Commendable originality from Baltimore’s Tired all the Time

Posted on:

Billing themselves as a therapeutic cure to “Tired all the Time” (TATT) syndrome, TATT’s edgeless tracks seem in many ways to mimic the emotionally dulling effects of anti-depressants. There are no snarling guitars, extended drum solos, or soaring Bono vocals on TATT’s new release PLEASE STOP, the stimulation from the music is intentionally blunted. However, beneath the smoothed out “post-pop” is an attempt to tap into deep despair, fitting for a band that aims to, “calm and sooth the existential stress of life”.

All in all, a highly original release from the Baltimore newcomers.

Fleetmac Wood is coming back to Holocene

Posted on:

There’s no denying how influential Fleetwood Mac has been on the state of music, especially their seminal album Rumours, which reached its 40th anniversary this year. We’ve all taken to the album in varying ways, looking to it as inspiration for our own projects or as comfort needed in trying times. Regardless of what we turn to it for, Rumours and Fleetwood Mac have been and will continue to be some of the most influential facets in music of all time. It’s on this basis that Fleetmac Wood exists.

An interesting concept never really done before, Fleetmac Wood is a remix project and party including various DJs and fans who share a love of Fleetwood Mac. The party project isn’t meant to be a tribute, but more a dedication and celebration of it all by editing and remixing songs from the band’s extensive catalog. Its roots started down in an East London basement back in 2012, after a launch party for the release of a remix to "Dreams" by Psychemagik. Nothing has been the same since.

The Fleetmac fun is coming for its third time to Holocene on April 1, so we wanted to dig a little deeper into the project and how it’ll focus on Rumours specifically. We extended a couple questions to one of the DJs playing the Holocene rave, Lisa Jelliffe aka Roxanne Roll

What made you decide on Rumours as the album to finally take on?

Rumours is the ‘gateway’ drug for Fleetwood Mac fans. Since we started the remix project in London 2012, we’ve never made it the focus before as it felt too obvious and there is so much more material in their back catalogue. As the 40th anniversary of Rumours, it felt like the right time to acknowledge what a perfect album it is and give it a proper birthday party. It’s a four hour event so we play lots of other Fleetwood Mac tracks but around midnight we have a celebration and play exclusive remixes of Rumours tracks starting with Side 1, track 1.

As far as the musical approach taken to do the remixes, what was the inspiration behind it? Why a rave/club approach?

As DJs, dance music is a genre we love and have played for a long time and combining old with new feels perfectly natural. Most of the edits and remixes we play have a disco-leaning and a Balearic sensibility. Rock is a genre that was created to be played loud and danced to, it’s just that people are not used to hearing it in clubs. People really dance hard at our nights and lose themselves in the music. Because they have so many emotional connections with the songs, it’s a joyful release. It’s musical therapy.

What do you feel Rumours has done for the music world? What has it done for you personally?

Apart from creating a 40 year soundtrack to millions of lives, I think it’s helped women in music. Here’s a rock n’ roll band to rival The Eagles and The Rolling Stones that is not just men. Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie are both talented musicians and songwriters who stayed true to themselves and became world famous rock stars. It’s the multi-perspective songwriting that really gives Rumours depth. There’s a lot of authentic stories being told through the music.

Which song is your favorite remix and why?

There are loads of amazing ones and our friends Psychemagik have made some classics, but the one that I am excited to play right now is a new edit of "Silver Springs" that I created. I was really nervous to work on it as "Silver Springs" is my favourite Fleetwood Mac song. It famously never made the original vinyl and became a B side to "Go Your Own Way." I was never going to better the original but I think the feeling is still true to the song and it has gone down well at recent parties.

Sleepy Sun Share New Track – Seaquest

Posted on:

Sleepy Sun has released the new song "Seaquest" which will be featured up their upcoming LP, slated for release in late spring 2017. In the meantime be sure to get in contact with Sleepy Sun and tell them your secrets… your stories… your private tales at +1 415-646-6705. The band also recently had their promo photos taken by Amy Harrity. You can watch a video montage here.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on in these dark, deeply uncertain days, it’s humanity’s latent desire to unplug from it all—to put our smartphones down, survey our immediate surroundings, and let the sweeter things in life rise to the surface.

Sleepy Sun get it. Now five albums and more than a decade into making their own elusive brand of bold rock music, the Bay Area band isn’t interested in flooding our synapses with far too many ideas on their new LP, Private Tales. They’d rather let a grander vision unfold over time, rewarding anyone with the willingness to wait it out, to actually listen.

Listen to Sleepy Sun’s new track, Seaquest here.

Dark electro-soul artist, LEA, plays Footlight 4.12, premieres new video

Posted on:

This month, LEA (FKA Lea Cappelli)—a NYC-based artist crafting synth-pop with a sultry, dark and soulful twist–droppeda new video (see below) for a song titled “Such A Lovely Thing”. The video combines her smokey, low-register vocals and artfully minimalistic instrumentation, with gorgeous black and white visuals and movement that are meant to conjure responses to the ideals of, as the artist puts it, “femininity and fortitude,” and gender fluidity — major themes of the track. “Such a Lovely Thing,” however remains only a first taste of what’s to come: LEA is gearing up to drop her EP "Fever Dream" some time in the coming months. If you’re looking to hear more from the artist be sure to check out her set on April 12th at Footlight as she performs alongside Smoke & Sugar, Hippiehaus and Laney Lynx. – Olivia Sisinni

New Bardo Pond Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Bruising percussion and sludgy, scorching guitars, tempered by Isobel Sollenberger’s peacefully permeating vocals, Under The Pines is the newly released record from Philly psychedelic stalwarts Bardo Pond. Available via UK label Fire Records, the album creates a crushing sense of catharsis. Its brooding, reserved appeal to fuzzed-out aggression steadily murmurs in one’s mind. Bardo Pond will be celebrating its arrival this Friday, March 31 at Johnny Brenda’s with Sparrow Steeple and Eric Arn.
