Weekend Warrior, August 2 – 4

Posted on:

We always look forward to 2nd Street Festival. Like we’ve mention before, it’s the closest feeling that we get in Philly to hanging out in the streets of Nawlins. While its pretty obvious this year’s headliner The Low Anthem will have a difficult time matching the energy of their predecessors tUnE-yArDs and Man Man, the recruitment of hometown favorites like Vacationer, On the Water, West Philadelphia Orchestra, The Bailey Hounds, Mohican, Weird Hot, Banned Books, Laser Background and many others will keep things plenty fun and interesting this Sunday. Check out the full schedule above, and we look forward to seeing you out and about this weekend. 2nd Street Festival, N. 2nd St. (between Green & Germantown Sts.), 12pm – 10pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Don’t Miss Baltimore Outdoor Music Fest – Rez Ball XI – TOMORROW

Posted on:

Rex Ball XI may be your final chance to enjoy a homegrown Baltimore based outdoor music festival this year! Located on vast piece of land endearingly entitled, Nick and Julie’s Magical Fairytale Land which is conveniently located in Lanham, Maryland, outside of the College Park area in Baltimore, this festival’s local line up is a strong compilation of talented musicians who derive from all over the Baltimore area.

Local journalist and member of the jam rock band The Rez, Marc Shapiro, founded this long running indie music fest, making Rez Ball a chance for his energetic and resourceful four piece band to celebrate and share the stage with there friends and their community once a year. Make sure you don’t miss this summer fest. Gates open at noon tomorrow. We are always happy to support local events, and this one is going to be a blast! -Jordannah Elizabeth

The Quelle Source Record Release/Farewell Show at MilkBoy Philly Aug.2

Posted on:

After a good run that has birthed a couple of enjoyable albums, The Quellle Source will be playing their final show at MilkBoy Philly tonight. However, despite the sad news, this evening will be quite celebratory as they go out with a bang by releasing their LP Send Out The Creatures. The album, which is their first to be fully produced in a professional studio since their self-titled EP in 2008, was mastered at MilkBoy Philly’s studio, and features some impressive artwork from local artist Samskrits. And if the albums first single “Hot Metal Coverage”is any indication, it’s sure to be a melodic good time from start to finish. Joining the band for their last hurrah will be good friends Goodnight Lights and The Chairman Dances. Milkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Photo Recap: XPoNential Music Fest 2013

Posted on:

This year’s XPoNential Music Fest was one of the most crowded (if not the most crowded) ever, which is not surprising since it teamed up with Americanarama featuring the likes of heavy-hitters Bob Dylan, Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t play in our favor with the skies pouring down biblical amounts of precipitation on its final day causing the non-Americanarama section of the weekend to get rained out during Justin Townes Earle’s set cancelling Dawes’ performance. While most ran for cover, others made the best of it by playing Slip n’ Slide on the muddy hills. Overall, the atmosphere was very peaceful with the exception of John Butler Trio dragging in the frat-boy-meets-’90’s-tribal-tattoo element. Philly’s own DRGN KING and The Fleeting Ends provided the more rockin’ sets of the weekend, while high schoolers The Districts continued to impress with a moving, emotional performance. Blitz the Ambassador represents with single, “African in New York”

Posted on:

Blitz the Ambassador has been lighting up the NYC scene for a few years now. Pivoting from the success of previous tracks “Breathe” and “Something to Believe,” he has returned with a self-produced afrobeat-inspired meditation on the plight of an African in New York City. With nods to Fela Kuti, Sting, and Jay-Z, “African in New York” features a lush textured beat that is equal parts boom-bap and tribal drum circle. Blitz’s highly visceral descriptive narrative is rife with cultural ephemera and slices of the everyday hustle. His masterful storytelling and intrepid flow draw the listener into the world as he sees it. As Blitz continues to refine both his identity and his talents, we find him as honest as ever, harkening back to an Illmatic Nas. His moniker is entirely apt because, like any ambassador, he “represents!”

Bashly EP “Not Alone”

Posted on:

Ashly Badgett of Bashly (get it?) has a gorgeous voice that is probably powerful enough to rattle rafters. However, what makes listening to Bashly’s spring EP “Not Alone” so interesting is the restraint in the vocals. Badgett sounds similar to Adele with an avant-garde edge, and she provides an anchor to the EP’s dreamy, languid collection of songs. The band is working on a full length to be released this winter, and will be performing at The End August 11th. – Terra James-Jura

Mwahaha The Burning of Rome and B. Hamilton @ The Night Light in Oakland – 8/02

Posted on:

Electronic indie group Mwahaha have just returned from their first UK tour and are playing The Night Light in Oakland to celebrate! Synth-rock band, The Burning of Rome and heavy post-rock group B. Hamilton will be supporting Mwahaha on this local bill. These bands, each coming from similar high-tempo-fast-paced-rock backgrounds, will bring an energy filled show! The stylistically eclectic, yet tastefully similar sounds will definitely bring a fun and entertaining welcome back show. –Victor Casillas Valle

The Deli Philly’s August Album of the Month: Preppy Spooky – Orbit To Leslie

Posted on:

Orbit To Leslie’s latest EP, Preppy Spooky, delightfully veers off course from their previous work. Their former releases featured space-age, surf rock, but the band’s recent venture crash lands on the Moon’s lonesome reality where the group is stranded to piece together what’s left of their equipment to record some lo-fi tracks. The five-song album coats prior sounds in a gothic veneer, upbeat optimism maturing into wizened nostalgia.

Setting the tone is opener, “Stop Drop And Roll”- casual ambience, a steadily tapping drum, and bluesy guitar riffs move through a dense fog of unrequited love. Rather than the typically cheerful yearning found in similar mid-century styling, doo-wop takes on the darker shade of “doom-wop” (a term coined by rock outfit Mister Heavenly). Just like the recovery stages of love lost, the track shifts from melancholy reminiscence to determined possibility. Using the all-instrumental “Ballad of Shortie Smalls,” Orbit To Leslie forces the pace, surging on heavy drums and a deep bass line. This sets the stage for the EP’s standout “KCKC” and its growling waves of surf rock. Both tunes pump blood into the band’s already impressive instrumentals; each individual piece folding into the whole with a slow simmer of raw aggression. The following track is the after-effects of emotions boiled over, a psychedelic daze aptly titled “Saturn Files.” Contrasting percussion accompanies stark strums on guitar and bass, all of which play out in off-kilter rhythms, cycling back into a doom-wop state on the final song, “Straight Thru The Night.”

Despite its brevity in length, Preppy Spooky manages to take listeners through the full cycle of moving on and the honesty in regressing back to square one. Amongst the ups and downs, Orbit To Leslie’s acquired nonchalance stood constant: the album’s greatest asset. Personified in frontman Chris Woods’ echoing vocals, there isn’t an unconcern for the music but in its resulting emotional conveyance. The group performs their EP’s structured musical foundation without a ceiling, allowing the music to evolve organically as each song progresses. It’s this ability to let loose of their grip that adds volumes to the mere five tracks of Preppy Spooky. – Shaylin O’Connell
