Diplo Launches New Mad Decent Offshoot Label

Posted on:

Pitchfork reported earlier today that Diplo’s Mad Decent has launched an offshoot label called Jeffree’s, which plans to give exposure to emerging producers. Its first release “Heyyo!” (which you can take a listen to and download HERE) is from the Vancouver duo Expendable Youth. The label will be making a new free single available every other Thursday, and then will be collecting the tracks for digital compilations every two months. Below is a statement from Diplo about the new venture.

Our new extension of the label, Jeffree’s, is the best new music — the most progressive, the most amazing, the deepest underground and subterranean sounds from the Earth’s crust; the best sounds available and it’s free. It’s what Mad Decent was originally made for — new artists thinking outside of the box.

New Heypenny album, video

Posted on:

Well how ’bout this. Heypenny just released their new record, Tendre, for free via Noisetrade just hours after they finished mastering. Leaving a tip might be a nice thing to do in exchange for this early Christmas present. Plus, check out the new video for their first single, "La La Loud," edited by vocalist Ben Elkins and filmed by Victor Huckabee in Shelby Park and a gorgeous house in East Nashville. The song, like the rest of the record, shows a quieter, softer side of Heypenny. Cool. We didn’t know they had one.

FYI on DIYs in PHL: Cloud Entertainment

Posted on:

You might find Cloud Entertainment presented events happening throughout Philly from your favorite local music venues/bars to the most off-the-beaten-path DIY spaces. Led by Josh Craft who has been putting together its pieces since high school, the promotion/PR/booking agency has been hard at work supporting local artists and bringing them together with out-of-town talent. We recently caught up with Cloud Entertainment’s head honcho as a big weekend of multiple bills approaches for the DIY organization. You can read about its highlights and lowlights as well as all things in-between in our interview with Craft HERE.

Chappo headlines Mercury with Monogold, Lucius and Jeff Taylor on 12.17

Posted on:

CHAPPO is coming off a busy summer/fall, playing an array of sweaty, confetti covered clubs, releasing their inner moon shamans on the regular, recording and self-releasing their second concept EP as well tracking their debut full length album, which is due out in the spring 2012. Their first EP Plastique Universe was touted for it’s "excellently overstuffed garage psyche sound" by Pitchfork and the lead off track "Come Home" was featured on an Ipod touch commercial last fall. CHAPPO has also received much praise for their lives shows – they played for The Deli at CMJ 2010. Intense and engaging their music combines psychedelic flourishes with funky lighting, fog, feathers and… confetti! They are headlining their first show at Mercury Lounge on Saturday, December 17th. Also on the bill are good Jeff Taylor, Monogold and Lucius. Hear the new track "Island Opiate" from their latest EP "Plastique Universe II: Pisces Princess," streaming below. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). The Deli’s NYC Open Blog is powered by The Music Building and APS Mastering.

Many Arms Invade Earth at Elena’s Soul Lounge Dec. 1

Posted on:

Before things mellow out at Elena’s Soul Lounge tonight for their Thursday Nite Chill with DJ Paulie Paul, it’s going to get a little sci-fi weird with extraterrestrial sounds from improvisational prog/jazz/noise/math/rock power trio Many Arms. Led by Deli favorite scary Twilight Zone shredder Nick Millevoi, the mood will be anything but chill during their set at the West Philly watering hole. The band recently signed to John Zorn’s Tzadik label, and will be dropping a full-length album next year. They’ll be joined by noisy pop-tinged rockers Banned Books, West Philly punkish metal outfit Split Red (who will debuting new frontman Justin Duerr from Northern Liberties), and headliner NYC’s Little Women. Erika Spring from Au Revoir Simone plays Glasslands on 12.04 and Mercury on 12.05

Posted on:

At first blush, Erika Spring‘s solo work is a bit lighter than her fare with Au Revoir Simone. There appears to be the beginnings of a dance beat, which could bode interestingly for the future. Of course, many of the same electro-chill elements remain, her voice, after all, is her voice: Breathy, girly, powerful in a whispering, vulnerable fashion. The lyrics are vague and sad, but "6 More Weeks" isn’t depressing. In fact, it seems to be a promising start for Spring’s solo endeavor. The song will be released on a split 7" in July, so if you want to hear more, you’ll have to see her live. And you’re in luck, since she’s playing two gigs within the next 5 days, at Grasslands and Mercury Lounge on December 4 and 5. Listen to the track on her facebook, presented in an endless loop. – allison levin

The Dead Exs and Daddy Long Legs play John Varvatos in-store show

Devilish slide guitars, howling distorted vocals and blues riffs out the wazoo define New York based duo and ex Deli Artist of the Month The Dead Exs (in the picture), comprised of David Pattillo (vocals/guitar) and Wylie Wirth (drums).
