A breath of fresh folk: The Whispering Tree – Live at Bar R, 08.31

Posted on:

Folk music lovers, do yourself a favor and immediately go to iTunes to download The Whispering Tree’s latest album, "Go Call the Captain," and then spend the afternoon listening to all ten tracks start to finish. Rich in lyrics, music, and vocals each song outdoes the next, gorgeously drawing you and sweeping you off your feet like the first few months of a summer romance. Comprised of vocalist Eleanor Kleiner and bassist Ellie Brangbour, The Whispering Tree is easily one of the strongest bands to emerge from the New York indie music scene. “The Tallest,” a standout song on the album, literally breaks your heart and strings it back together again with hauntingly beautiful vocals backed by piano and drums that encourage you to close your eyes and get lost in the music. Exquisitely produced and powerfully delivered, The Whispering Tree has burst through the glass ceiling, demanding the respect they deserve as one of the most talented duos to take stage in NYC. – CM

A band to check out: Dead Stars

Posted on:

Brooklyn trio Dead Stars, a constellation of J’s, Jeff (Guitar, Vocals), Jay (Drums), and John (Bass), introduce themselves to the music scene with their full-length release “Break the Tide.” Several tracks – “The Party’s Over,” “What It Is,” and “The Black Swan” – embody influences from noise pop (if that’s how you call Dinosaur Jr,) grunge, folk, and psychedelia, while the title track “Break the Tide” breaks into heavy chords before settling into smooth arpeggios relaxing into a familiar reflective rock cadence. – Meijin Bruttomesso

Saints Of Valory come with quite the international flair. Front man Gavin Jasper is Brazilian, guitarist Godfrey Thomson is American, on drums Gerard Bouvier is from France, & on keyboards Stephen Buckle hails from Canada. After just a few shows in Austin, Saints Of Valory already have a rapidly growing fan base due in part to such crowd favorites as Merry-Go-Round, Providence, Stay Wild & more! And now, with headlining shows coming up at Stubb’s Jr (Sept 4th), and the Parish (Sept 30th) this is a band you will not want to miss!

Live Review – Jason Myles Goss, Dietrich Strausse at Lizard Lounge

Posted on:

On Friday night, a warm and welcoming crowd filled the Lizard Lounge’s intimate basement room for a homecoming concert of sorts for former Cambridge singer/songwriter (and current Brooklyn resident) Jason Myles Goss Goss performed with his 4-piece band in a show that also featured local supporting acts Dietrich Strause and Beth Colegrove.

Beth-1

Colegrove kicked off the night, and despite her admission that she was still recovering from bronchitis, she managed to subdue the crowd with her bubbly voice and confessional, intimate songwriting style. Standouts included the upbeat tune “Yellow Canary” and a delicately picked rendition of Leonard Cohen’s break up ode “Hotel Chelsea #2”.

Dietrich-2

After a short break during which the crowd continued to swell, singer/songwriter Dietrich Strause proved himself a rising local star by bringing the boisterous crowd to a hush with his opener, the understated ballad “Susquehanna” from his debut album. He just as quickly brought the crowd back to life with “Nuns With Guns," a foot stomper featuring nimble finger picking and pointed social commentary ("Are we swimming for the next war / or treading for our lives?"). Several upbeat numbers followed, including a two-step take on Bob Dylan’s “Buckets of Rain," and alternated with more intimate ballads that showcased Strause’s excellent guitar playing and smooth, straightforward vocal delivery. The highlight of the set was a track from Strause’s forthcoming second album, a driving bluesy number called “Brickyard,” which was intercut with a completely acoustic rendition of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” that again brought a noisy crowd to dead silence for nearly the entire song – an impressive feat for a Friday night at the Lizard Lounge.

JMG-2

Finally, headliner Jason Myles Goss took the stage with his roots rock outfit.  The bass player rocked one of the best handlebar moustaches I have seen in a while, a fact which led my companion to comment, “With a moustache like that you know these guys will be legit.”  Sure enough, Goss’s anthemic and energetic songs were catchy and memorable from the very first listen.  The band was tight and well balanced, giving Goss plenty of breathing room for his mellow and well worn vocals to drive hook-filled tunes like “Come Back To Me” and “Heavy."  Each of his bite sized portraits of city life went down smooth with just enough grit and emotion to keep the audience enthusiastically riding along, so that by the time the crowd starting shuffling out after 1 AM, it felt more like breaking up a party among friends than ending a show.

Noisy NYC bands on the rise: Unstoppable Death Machines

Posted on:

Defecting from Queens, the dynamic brother combo Unstoppable Death Machines have made the move over the Greenpoint Bridge official, becoming influential Brooklyn underground wheeler dealers in the process. This two-man tornado has released a spastic four-track EP that captures their raw intensity with a hearty slice of the untamed nature this tandem’s music delivers. Sculpting their noise rock meanderings from grunge skeletons with oodles of chances to groove out, this act specializes in servicing ears with dollops of heavily-effected guitars with off-kilter rhythms that sound like a cross between Jesus Lizard, Lightning Bolt, Hella, and Butthole Surfers, comfortably making uncomfortable and unconventional rock music. www.myspace.com/theunstoppabledeathmachines. – Mike SOS

Michael Nhat album release show Sept. 8th @ The Echo Curio

Rapper Michael Nhat

It may be related to the fact that I’ve been on a Jack Parow phase lately, but do sick rappers have equally sick mustaches? If the answer is ‘yes!’ then I can only follow the trend with Michael Nhat, who throws his raps over loops that sound straight out of someone’s grandma’s 1970s optigan (If you haven’t played one of these, then you don’t know what magic is). He’s also been known to jump in and perform with other LA locals like Pizza!, So Many Wizards, Halloween Swim Team, Big Whup, and Moses Campbell.

Nhat will be releasing his newest album, Swimming to Cambodia, September 8th. To give it a proper kick off, he’ll be performing that night with Pizza!, Halloween Swim Team, and Tik Tik at The Echo Curio.

The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) of the Month: The Lawsuits

Posted on:

Bucks County’s The Lawsuits are just coming on to the Philly music scene, and we think that they will blend in quite nicely with the rich, ever-growing folk scene that seems to constantly inspire others to join it. XPN meet guitarist/vocalist Brian Strousse, bassist Brendan Cunningham, vocalist Vanessa Winters and drummer Josh Friedman. They are The Lawsuits. You will like them. Here is more about them.

The Deli: How did The Lawsuits start?

The Lawsuits: The four of us met through mutual friends…yada yada yada, here we are.

TD: Where did the band name come from?

TL: It isn’t what you think. It refers to the suit of a lawyer…a three-piece suit…black…maybe even pinstriped…with fancy cufflinks. "The Birthdaysuits" was a close second, but we like to keep it classy when we party.

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?

TL: Dr. Dog, Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Sam Cooke, Fleetwood Mac, Ween, John Prine, Merle Haggard,  Zeppelin,  ELO are the first to come to mind, but there are dozens of others.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?

TL: Drink Up Buttercup, Ground Up, and Dopapod are all comprised of various friends of ours from high school so we tend to follow them a bit closer than others. We also love Nicky Egan, Levee Drivers, Toy Soldiers, Birdie Busch, Ween and Dr. Dog.

TD: What’s the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?

TL: First Concert – Soulive (Vanessa), The Who (Brendan), Bob Dylan (Brian), and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Josh).

First Album – Spin Doctors: POCKET FULL OF KRYPToNITE (Vanessa), Chumbawumba: TUBTHUMPING (Brendan), Wings – GREATEST HITS (Brian), and Will Smith – BIG WILLIE STYLE (Josh).

TD: What do you love about Philly?

TL: The FOOD, the beer and a shot deal for $3, the history , First Friday’s in Olde City, Tailgating in K-Lot, "World Phucking Champions!", El Camino Real, Fairmount Park. How each street is like a different country.

TD: What do you hate about Philly?

TL: Hearing it referred to as "New York’s little brother", Bikers in center city who ride in the middle of the street, "construction", pot holes that never get filled, Jersey drivers, parking, Duck Tours, PPA, Cab drivers, inadequate subway system.

TD: What are your plans for 2010?

TL: New album, New Tour, New Loves and 2011.

TD: What was your most memorable live show?

TL: Playing a hole in the wall called The Rock-it club in WV. I knew we were with good people when we actually stayed to play the show instead of running for the hills (hotel).

TD: What’s your favorite thing to get at the deli?

TL: Italian hoagie with a huge pickle (it’s all about the pickle!). Turkey LTO oil vinigar motz cheese, or anything with chicken in it.time. Also, Head Cheese with cheese.

(This last question was added by The Lawsuits.)

TL: What’s your favorite thing to do as a band?

TL: Make scrapbooks and discuss the complexities of sex and the city.

Eastern Conference Champions to take over Spaceland residency

Posted on:

Eastern Conference Champions by Clay Patrick McBride

Spaceland’s Monday night residency has become the stuff of legends, attracting some of LA’s best, including recent stints from Helen Stellar and Saint Motel. This time it’s Angelenos-by-way-of-Pennsylvania Eastern Conference Champions who will be taking the stage for the month of September.

Eastern Conference Champions leans towards a more introspective and melancholy version of Modest Mouse, and their twist on the theme works perfectly. The band released their EP, Santa Fe, last year sans former record label Suretone/Universal and have been loving the self control ever since. Their follow-up fill length, Speak-Ahh, is slated for release this fall.

Their Monday night Spaceland shows are free, and to keep you busy with something a little different, they’re sharing their song ‘Bloody Bells (M. Zero Break Mix)’.
