Livers Wanna Live: a Benefit for Pete Angevine at JB’s July 31

Drummer Pete Angevine is a fixture in Philadelphia. From contributing pounds to many-a Philly music notables like Arc in Round, the Flesh, Illuminea, and Pepi Ginsberg, to spending half a decade in Satanized, and manning one-half of the instrumental duo Man Antlers, Angevine has weaved his signature percussive pattern into the city’s vibrant sonic blanket. And tonight, his friends are giving back through the “Livers Wanna Live” benefit show at Johnny Brenda’s, in which all proceeds will go towards alleviating the monstrous medical bills Angevine incurred after undergoing a liver transplant in 2008 due to “acute and fulminant” liver failure. Angevine’s former band Satanized will be there to thrash with heavy rhythms and erratic vocals alongside the beautifully brassy West Philadelphia Orchestra, the electronic renderings of Hubble, glitch-enriched club jams via Joe Lentini, and sultry vocals accompanied by elegant sounds from Pepi Ginsberg. Since his transplant, Angevine has focused his energies on other pursuits – mainly churning out unique ice cream flavors through his Little Baby’s Ice Cream venture, which will also be available for consumption this evening. So gear up your taste buds for some flavors along the lines of Early Grey Sriracha, Balsamic Banana and Cardamom Caramel, and open up your hearts (and wallets) for a worthy and necessary cause. Busses & Virtual Virgin at PhilaMOCA July 31

Busses will be the direct support for fellow Philly rockers Virtual Virgin tonight at PhilaMOCA. The Fishtown outfit draws from every artery branching from rock ‘n’ roll and oh how it makes them thrive. Busses will start down a path of buzzing 70s metal Zeppelined-out electrics and end up in an easier listening Cymbals Eat Guitars alternative 90s mood rock. Next thing you know you’re in a shit storm of emotional post-punk wails and proggy post-hardcore Volta experimentation. In the journey of Busses, you don’t know where you’re starting and you certainly won’t know where you’ll end up, but it’s a joy ride not to miss out on. Virtual Virgin will follow the eclectic rockers with their dramatized jazzy dance rock. The group performs uniquely theatrical songs to the likeness of The Dear Hunter, replacing its rough edges with a feathery Local Natives lightness and raw classical purity. Julie Slick Taking the Lead at The Fire July 31

Julie Slick shreds on her bass for a multitude of interesting projects (Dragon King, Springs, Paper Cat, Bahner/Slick, Adrian Belew Power Trio) around town and nationally/internationally. You can only imagine the deep grooves that she’s laid down over the years growing up and jamming alongside her brother Eric Slick, which is most likely why they’ve provided a sturdy backbone of a rhythm section for some equally talented folks. Tonight you can find Julie taking the lead on stage with her very own prog rock experiment at The Fire. She’ll be joined by the Beatles-inspired indie pop outfit The Day Life, who finely captured the spirit and sounds of the Fab Four with the help of Grammy Award winner Scot Sax on their latest EP Pick Me Up. Benefit for The Stickmen’s Beth Ann Lejman at Connie’s Ric Rac July 30

In ‘82, punk’s first wave was over and its second was on the rise, allowing New Wave and post-punk’s many faces to emerge. Amidst this genesis of genre and musical evolution, Philly-based No Wavers The Stickmen revamped a sound that defied convention. With guitar, synth, and frenetic energy, The Stickmen distinguished themselves as local darlings, opening for acts like the Slits, Gang of Four, and the Pop Group. Along with founding member, Peter L. Barker, fellow guitarist Beth Ann Lejman, who eventually took over duties on the keys, crafted a memorable fusion between punk, funk, and art rock. Currently battling cancer, Lejman’s contributions to Philadelphia’s music scene remain timeless. In the face of illness, Lejman’s punk rock roots shine through, as voiced on the event page for tonight’s benefit show. “Cancer don’t stand a chance cuz I’m gonna kick its Goddamn ass,” she states. Aid her in her fight tonight by rocking out to the buzzing hum of Bunnydrums and squealing riffs by The Blessed Muthas. Along with 25 Cromwell Street (feat. the Dead Milkmen‘s Rodney Anonymous), Trained Attack Dogs, Blunder Boys, and FOD, tonight’s event is punk at its finest and for a kick ass cause. The National Rifle Open for Flogging Molly at the E Factory July 30

It’s been the summer of awesomeness for The National Rifle. They kicked it off with a marathon bout of touring that had seen the band dropping hints about new material. And that’s going to culminate on August 20th when they preview what they’ve been working on, which will appear on TNR’s first full length album Do You Want This?, at Kung Fu Necktie. But the band will be playing what may very well they’re biggest show to date when they open for Flogging Molly this evening at the Electric Factory. Though the show was originally scheduled to be at the Festival Pier and had to be moved at the last minute, it will certainly not take away from the energy that they’ll be exuding on stage this evening. Kurt Vile Contributes to Japan Benefit Compilation

Kurt Vile has contributed the track “Been Searchin” to Recorded for Japan, a compilation to raise funds for Japan relief. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this album will go directly towards the continuing recovery and reconstruction effort, specifically the Japanese Red Cross. The digital-only compilation will be available on August 4. It also features tracks from R. Stevie Moore (feat. members of MGMT), Ariel Pink, Chairlift, Violens, and many others. Most of the songs were recorded and mastered at Brooklyn’s Vacation Island Recording studio between April and June 2011. RJD2’s Icebird Announces Debut LP

The duo will be releasing their debut LP The Abandoned Lullalby on October 11 via RJD2’s own label RJ’s Electrical Connections. Weekend Warrior, July 29 – 31

There are way too many things to do this weekend, but these are our picks. Of course, you should be at the Cloud Entertainment and Deli Magazine presented Rock and Read Festival on Saturday which aims to raise awareness of educational and musical organizations while delivering a heaping pile of music at Bookspace on Saturday. Headlining the event will be legendary carnival punk rockers Mischief Brew, and this might just be the bands last Philly show before the release of their upcoming album, The Stone Operation. Another appropriately featured act will be Harry & The Potters, who  have traveled the U.S. and several foreign countries performing their book themed music to the masses. Add in the psychedelic grunge of Dragon King, the jangly pop of New Motels, the soulful twang of Satellite Hearts, and plenty more to help make it a magical occasion. But the fun doesn’t end there this weekend because the 3rd Annual 2nd Street Festival is happening down the road in Northern Liberties on Sunday. It will be the first one to be programmed by the Philadelphia Folksong Society in partnership with Point Entertainment. This year’s festival is gaining some serious attention with buzz-worthy indie darlings tUnE-YarDs and Delicate Steve scheduled to perform. And there will also be the always welcomed ass-shaking funk of Black Landlord along with other local acts like East Hundred, Toy Soldiers, The Great Unknown, Cheers Elephant, Banned Books, and many more (which you can check out HERE). Like we said earlier, TOO MANY THINGS TO DO, and there is not enough time in the weekend to do them all, but we’ll try our best.

Hustle Jawn Feat. Freeway at The Blockley July 29

The Blockley is hosting Hustle Jawn tonight with Freeway alongside up and coming Philly emcee Ms. Jade. Freeway has been rockin the mic with his signature high-pitched delivery since his days alongside Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel on Roc-A-Fella Records back in the early ‘00s. More recently, Freeway signed to independent hip hop label Rhymesayers Entertainment and released the critically acclaimed The Stimulus Package with Jake One. Earlier this year, Freeway also recorded an EP in only 24 hours with Statik Selektah called The Statik–Free EP. The follow-up to The Stimulus Package is scheduled to be released on November 30, titled Diamond In the Ruff. The next album will feature production from longtime Freeway collaborators, Just Blaze and Jake One, as well as some verses from fellow Philly emcee Black Thought. Trophy Wife Welcomes Queer Sounds from the New South & Other Parts at PhilaMOCA July 29

The winning combination of Trophy Wife is a local socially/politically/personally-conscious post-hardcore two-piece consisting of D.C. transplants drummer Katy Otto (co-founder of Exotic Fever Records and formerly of Del Cielo) and guitarist Diane Foglizzo. Their lyrical themes surround the feminist and LGBT perspective and experience while still maintaining a more universal appeal for others. Tonight at PhilaMOCA, they’ll be opening the music portion of the evening when they welcome the queercore-friendly lineup of out-of-towners Hilly Eye, ZOO (ex-Little Teeth), Field Mouse, and Allison Weiss. But before the aural stimulation begins, there will be a 30-minute screening of filmmaker Meredith Heil’s Whistlin’ Dixie, an exploration of how the queer lo-fi DIY scene is “altering the political and social climate of the new South for generations to come.” You can check out a trailer for the movie HERE.
