The Making Time/R5 Halloween Freak Out – Part III at The Barbary Oct. 30

Posted on:

It’s Mischief Night so let’s get into some trouble! Making Time/R5 will be taking over all three floors of The Barbary tonight. They’ll be surrounded by plenty of their friends/the usual suspects spinning what’s near and dear to their hearts. Unfortunately, there is no rad video from Klip Collective to get you into the mood this year so let’s flashback to "Making Time’s Thriller 3000” video (below) from last year to get you feelin’ festive. Also swing by The Ox if you are looking for a little change of scenery (or are just under 21) for their Halloween Funn! The Barbary, 951 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Loud Times Ahead With The Tennis System

Posted on:

One of DC’s loudest bands, the Tennis System, has had an insanely awesome/busy month, and are about to keep the streak going through November. A few weeks ago, they began working on their next LP Teenagers (following The Future Of Our History,) up in Philly, and most recently had some gigs at CMJ up in New York. They’ve got several dates lined up (with their new line-up) all over the area in the next few weeks including St. Mary’s (11/4), Black Cat (11/9), and the Red Palace (11/30). So if you haven’t seen a decent shoegaze noise fest in a while- now’s your chance to find out why they got shut down by Austin cops at SxSW this year. In other words, bring earplugs. Loves it.

The Black Belles & The Greenhornes @ Third Man Records, 10/30/10

Posted on:

Just in case you don’t already have enough shows and parties lined up to attend this Halloween weekend, you might want to consider making your way to 7th Avenue to see The Black Belles play their first gig at Third Man Records. This Nashville quartet of sleek, raven-haired ladies was discovered by Jack White and, like the White Stripes, The Black Belles belt their lyrics in the style of ’60s soul, while the crash of the snare and the bluesy guitar-squealing add some grit. Be sure to listen for the song “What Can I Do,” which is noisy garage rock at its finest and one of their first recordings. And don’t forget to catch The Greenhornes set and pick up a copy of their new LP, “★ ★ ★ ★,” since this is their release show, after all. Doors are at 8 p.m. – Deli Editor

The Haunting of Fursaxa at Highwire Gallery Oct. 30

Posted on:

Local native Fursaxa (a.k.a. Tara Burke) conjures up cinematic soundscapes that are mystical and strange. Strange like a séance or a foggy moon-filled night. The ancient sounding intro of “Alone in the Dark Wood” feels like a high-register Gregorian chant, notes bending into twangy strums that settle yet linger like ghosts. There’s something hypnotic and calming in the way the track unfolds, in the way it deconstructs as it progresses, isolating each component with focus and haunting emphasis. Similar to Fever Ray nix the overt dramatics, Fursaxa’s sound exists on the same plane as folklore or myths. Whether it’s the swelling rush of “Cle Elum” or the tolling “Bells of Capistrano”, Fursaxa will entrance you at first listen, note by note each time. Burke will be joined tonight at the Highwire Gallery by The New Heaven and The New Earth, Killa and Vincent Fournier-Boisvert. Highwire Gallery, 2040 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $8, All Ages – Dianca Potts

Black Cat’s Halloween Ft. America Hearts, Foul Swoops, & the Cheniers

Posted on:

More Halloween madness, this Sunday at the Black Cat get a triple dose of Yeah Gates Records with America Hearts, Foul Swoops, and the Cheniers, with two of these label mates releasing 7"s that very night.  America Hearts spout cute and quirky pop on Be My Jones, featuring a tune with lyrics inspired by vocalist Jess Matthew’s 3 year old nephew.  Then on the gritty side of the rock spectrum, Foul Swoops churn out the rough and raw sounds of traditional DIY recording, bound to sound most excellent on vinyl.

CD of the Month: Weekends “Strange Cultures”

Posted on:

After literally and figuratively creating an impressive amount of buzz with their debut album and two follow up EPs, Baltimore’s up and comers Weekends have recently released their first full length record, titled Strange Cultures. Like similar two-man guitar-drums bands No Age and Japandroids, Weekends’ Brendan Sullivan and Adam Lempel produce a chaos of sound, full of texture and depth that would make many other larger bands painfully jealous. In their newest collection of songs, Weekends splash a thin shimmery veil of tropical vibes over a mess of noise rock, transforming a seemingly schizophrenic cacophony of guitar wails into something melodic, foot stompingly powerful, and entirely enjoyable. Strange Cultures finds the band bringing all facets of their sound to the table, making for an eclectic combination of head-swirling fuzz that sees the vocals taking a back seat to the scorching guitar lines and rock solid drum licks. The mostly instrumental closer, "Raingirls" is emblematic of their sun-soaked, axe-thrashing sound, part surfer-brah, part punk rocker. -Brooks

Painted Face Making DC Dance

Posted on:

Painted Face

Allie Alvarado (formerly of Blood Lines and Telepathe) , a DC transplant with Brooklyn blood, has teamed up with her dance music producer brother Alvin Risk, spawning Painted Face; an electro pop solo project that is easily, the next best thing in DC. The debut EP Undreamt recently released, is bound to get some serious spins on dance nights for sure; with a gorgeous track like "Undreamt" providing swirling beats and lushy vocals reminiscent of Kate Bush and Bat For Lashes.  So download it, and perfect your moves!
Alvarado recently gigged it up at Rock & Roll hotel with School of Seven Bells.  BYT was there to cover it, check out their review.

CMJ Winners: Living Days

Posted on:

Lead singer Stephonik Youth and her band Living Days put on a fantastic show at The Deli’s CMJ show at The Delancey on Tuesday 10.19. As you probably won’t trust our words as we organized that show, we’ll use Michelle Geslani’s review from Baeble Music to convince you:

"Living Days kind of scared my pants off (you’ll know when you see the photos). The music is electro-pop-meets-insane-garage-rock-party. Smoke machine, flower arrangements strewn all over the stage, and a frontwoman to die for, this band knows how to sell the whole package. Honestly, the frontwoman put on one of the best, most entertaining shows I’ve seen in awhile. If only all musicians were even 20% as active as her (she jumped on and off the stage, sang face-to-face with audience members, played with balloons, threw flowers, etc.), every show ever would probably be about 10x more satisfying. -michelle geslani
