Shanika Maria is a singer-songwriter from Hamilton. Her latest album “Subtle Uncertainties” is available now across all platforms and features the single “Mouth Eaters”. This tune has a unique pop beat to it with various synth noises spread across the soundscape. The video is very abstract and might take a few spins to understand the hidden meanings behind the imagery. On this new album Shanika seeks to “blur the lines and refuses to put her music in a box”. So step outside of your norm and let Shanika Maria guide you along a more introspective path. – Kris Gies
Ariana & the Rose debuts alluring music video for single “You Were Never My Boyfriend”
“You Were Never My Boyfriend” is the latest single from Ariana and the Rose and boy does it have a bite to it. The indie pop track is a commentary on the increasingly superficial love relationships of the twenty-first century and their broken promises. Riding a pensive wave from start to finish, the song shows off Ariana’s rich soulful soprano and expertly-placed synthesizer flourishes that define her synth-soul-pop sound. The accompanying music video is beautifully simple and helps to magnify the subject matter with subtle visual developments in a single shot. The attention-grabbing song—originally a simple poem by Ariana—has served its purpose by sparking curiosity for the pop singer’s next move. Watch the video here below. – Rene Cobar
Caroline Campbell “Ophelia”
Don’t let the red hair and piano driven music fool you into comparing musician Caroline Campbell to Tori Amos, for us a much more apt comparison would Carol King. Her debut album, Ophelia, was released earlier this month and is filled with powerful, but ethereal piano ballads. Through out the album what drives a deeper level of listening is her storytelling, Campbell is a fantastic writer with beautiful voice and skilled piano playing. She is a triple threat with a debut album that needs to be heard.
You can catch Caroline Campbell tomorrow, May 1st, at The Hideout with Valley Maker and The Singleman Affair. She will also be performing at Sleeping Village on May 22nd with Cafe Racer and Junegrass.

New Track: “Give & Take” – Sleepy Freak
Produced by Ethan Farmer, Kate Lord, a.k.a. Sleepy Freak, recently shared a new single called “Give & Take”. There’s a strength and sadness in the song as it speaks of the desire to embrace change. A melancholy tone exhibits regret and a continuous ache, while the vocals express determination within an isolated, emotive atmosphere. This is further enhanced/amplified by the backing vocals that rise at key points. (Photo by Ashley Gellman)
Josefina “Wake Up Call”
Singer/Songwriter Josefina released a new single called “Wake Up Call” earlier this month. This is the first new music we’ve had from her in over a year following up her 2018 LP, Starry Dome.
Originally from Buenos Aires, Josefina continues blend Alt-Country or Americana with Folk and hints of vintage ’60’s and ’70’s Pop.
Alycia Lang’s new single The Only One
Alycia Lang’s new single “The Only One” was just released off her upcoming album Makeshift out May 17. After her previous work with bands Waterstrider and Trails and Ways, Lang decided to work on her solo album and the result is jazzy rock with a hint of pop breathing warm percussives and lightly twanged vocals. Previous releases off the forthcoming LP (check out single “Projector”) are poppy, mildly synthed out, Enya-touched and sexy. Stay tuned for upcoming shows. – Michelle Kicherer, Associate Editor
Alt-rock act Damon Johnson plays 05.08 at The Basement East
Damon Johnson may not be green to the music scene, but his debut solo album — Memoirs of an Uprising — reintroduces him to the world as a versatile alt-rock performer who can switch between tender and tremendous on a dime. After leaving his previous band Black Star Riders after a soul search, Johnson recorded his solo debut, calling the material on it "the most honest music I’ve ever made." Johnson has experience working with artists such as Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy, and John Waite, and that influence along with his previous guitar work with Black Star Riders shines on the new record. You might also hear hints of U2 and Chris Cornell if you listen close enough. Johnson will perform at The Basement East on May 8th to support Memoirs of an Uprising; The Winery Dogs will also take the stage that night. Check out the video for "Shivering Shivering", the first single from the record, below. – Will Sisskind
New Gorgeous Porch Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

W.C. Beck takes NYC in new video for “The Long Way Home”
W.C. Beck comes to New York via Portland, Paris, and Kansas, cities with vast differences in their geography and culture. Beck’s travels have therefore provided his music with a cosmopolitan air and richness, but he still plays with a distinct Americana sound, which has the power to attract (and move) a multitude of listeneres with varying backgrounds. It fits, therefore, that Beck would shoot his music video for "The Long Way Home" — a hymn about living a life of constant exploration in order to find home — in the middle of Grand Central, where tens of thousands of commuters, locals, and tourists pass each other every day. The song will appear on Beck’s upcoming album First Flight, his ninth studio release, which drops on June 7th. He plays a release show at Mercury Lounge on June 9th to mark the event; stay tuned for more on that. In the meantime, watch the video for "The Long Way Home" below. – Will Sisskind
