Posted on:

Baltimore’s Alice Anna have been announcing their latest tracks recorded in NYC in late April on their FB page with more to come. The band, named after a street in Baltimore housing the tavern where the members were brought back together, initially started as a solo project of singer/songwriter Daniel Strauch. He had recorded an album inspired by his life on the road with his previous band of 6 years, the Secret State, which got regular rotation at JA Murphy’s. Now he’s joined with Josh Jones, Michael Marx, Hunter Schafer, Harrison McClain with more new material coming soon.

Check out the new video below for "Standing in the Rain" off their Dec. 2010 debut album. Their next gig is 7/16 at the 8×10 Club in B-more.

Below is a video to help get you in the mood. Our buddy Mike Harkness, drummer formerly for The Armchairs and currently with Arrah and the Ferns, told us about this beautifully done live performance video of “All the Bad In One Place” that they did on top of the OX’s roof for Hearnebraska.org when we interviewed him just before the last Armchairs show. Special thanks to the peeps at Love Drunk Studios for doing such a fantastic job and posting it. Enjoy! – The Deli Staff

Jimmy Gnecco finds his “Heart”

Posted on:

Whether it’s heartache, nostalgia, or contentment, the reasons an artist might be compelled to transmit an explicit feeling to an entire body of work will always be a mystery. Jimmy Gnecco has always been inspired by sorrow – when he began his career as the main songwriter of Ours, he utilized a brooding rock sound to balance his personal affliction in a grandiose manner. But something happened along the way: while those years brought a connectedness with his audience, he also felt that he had left those closest to him. After eight years of absence, the prolific songwriter found a way to reconnect that passion with “The Heart”, a set of mostly acoustic songs that may seep with melancholy, but also provide a hopeful air. Gnecco still hasn’t lost his driving force – a fragile falsetto so passionate that it can shatter glass at its most powerful.

Far-Out Fangtooth Set the Mood at JBs May 29

Posted on:

FAR-OUT FANGTOOTH

Known for taking the lo-fi approach with production, the onstage antics of moody, dark, and “flashy” local punks Far-Out Fangtooth, who are set to open for Times New Viking tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, are appropriately trippy with a hint of essential dread. Tracks like “Pathways”, found on their self-titled 7”, are lyrically concise with mood altering instrumentation. Fangtooth’s thumping drums with well-placed reverb renders riffs simultaneously melodic and dissonant. In a mood fostered similarly by Soars, “Pathways” latches onto the psyche with each cymbal crash and shred, leaving the listener transported, entranced. With effective garage-y malaise, “Why Don’t You Cry” will entice the lovelorn in leather jackets, causing any beer-sipping crowd to bob their heads, maybe more. Grab your favorite black tee and rock out with Far-Out Fangtooth tonight with Cassie Ramone (a la Vivian Girls), and the Babies. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., $12, 9pm, 21+ – Dianca Potts

Popo Up the Punk at the Barbary May 29

Posted on:

POPO Press 2010

POPO, Philly’s fraternity of Pakistani punks who not only embarked on an impressive tour with Nine Inch Nails in 2007 but also did a stint at this year’s SXSW for Mad Decent’s official showcase, take the gritty industrial influence and pair it with an eastern-inspired beachy rock, which you can hear on their Mad Decent mixtape POPOSUMMERMIXXX (snag it HERE for free). And while we wait for their full-length to drop, you can hear brothers Zeb and Shoaib jam out their splattered-with-wet-cement dreamy, summer-of-love surf punk at the Barbary tonight, where they’re sure to bring the hipster house down with fellow bill-mates WIN WIN and the Death Set. Originally from Sydney, Australia, the Death Set spent most of their time building up their fan bases in Brooklyn, Baltimore, and our beloved Philly after relocating to the east coast. With fuzzy, vigorous rock perfectly suited for a finished basement Frito brawl, the Brooklyn-based Aussie transplants thrash away at lively, energized nintendocore, crying out bratty, Beastie Boys-inspired vocals that, in the grand tradition of early ‘90s punk, are generally kept under two minutes. We can expect to hear some raging tunes from the trio’s new LP Michael Poiccard, which was produced by XXXChange of WIN WIN.  As for WIN WIN, the new collaboration from Spank Rock producer XXXChange, Chris Devil of DJ twosome Devlin & Darko, and video collage artist Ghostdad, they’ll plug their debut self-titled album, recently released on Vice Records. The new full-length features guest appearances from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, Spank Rocker Naem, and Gang Gang Dance’s Lizzie Bougatsos who appears on the first single “Releaserpm”, a brazen exchange of electronic beats with shrill but lighthearted vocals. The super-group adapts techno house music into rocking summery tunes that will resist any fist-pump. These three bands are sure to throw down and rock out. So join them. We all have Monday off anyway. The Barbary, 951 Frankfort Ave., 6pm, $10, All Ages – Jules Friedland

Japan Benefit at Bookspace May 28

Posted on:

There is a lot going on today in Philly, but I think that you really should swing by Bookspace this evening. It’s simply heartbreaking to see and hear what’s been going on to the people in Japan. There are so many innocent people suffering that surely don’t deserve to as a result of the horrific events that have devastated the country. And it is scary to think about how long it will take for the proud nation to fully recover if they ever actually do. Well, tonight you can help do your part and donate to Japan earthquake and tsunami relief while listening to some fine local acts Pet Milk, Arc In Round and Lantern, who are also generously donating their time and talents in Fishtown’s latest beloved performance space. You’ll also be treated to plenty of rockin’ tunes from Far-Out Fangtooth’s Joe and Nick who will be spinning throughout the evening and after the live music sets. All proceeds will go straight to the Japan relief effort. So come out and party for a good cause with some good peeps! Bookspace, 1113 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Get Swept Away with Oldermost at KFN May 28

Posted on:

Oldermost isn’t the Deli’s Featured Artist of the Month for no reason. The local four-piece’s blend of bittersweet melodies on their debut self-titled EP are so engulfed in this resplendent atmosphere of dulcet rhythms, prolific acoustic charms, and delicate vulnerability that you can’t help but be swept away by its russet beauty. And there’s no doubt that they’ll continue on this alluring path with the new material they’re working on–or at their show tonight at Kung Fu Necktie supporting San Diego surf-folk outfit the Donkeys and dual-coasting dreamscape Citay. We promise you’ll get swept away. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., $10, 7:30pm, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia

Blood Feathers Bring It Back Home at JBs May 28

Posted on:

Philly natives Blood Feathers‘ sound can be summed up as fuzzy retro-rock guitars, backed by sixties girl group drum patterns, with the dual lead vocal harmonies courtesy of founders Ben Dickey and Drew Mills, who formed the outfit in 2005 after cutting their teeth in various local bands in the ‘90s and wanting to branch out on their own. The six-piece released their second album, Goodness Gracious, digitally last December to critical acclaim, and has received consistent airplay on NPR’s World Café program (it’s now available on vinyl through the Philebrity label). And tonight, they’re returning home to grace their hometown with some good old fashion rock ‘n’ roll–and throw a rocking party in celebration of Mills’ birthday–at Johnny Brenda’s alongside fellow local rockers Swivel Chairs and Robai. So bake the best damn cake you can and bring it on down. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $10, 9pm, 21+  -Dan Brightcliffe

Delicate Steve, Headless Horseman and Arpline played Brooklyn Bowl at the closing night of The Deli’s NYC B.E.A.F.!

Posted on:

The Deli’s NYC B.E.A.F. 2011 will end tonight at Brooklyn Bowl with a night of superlative avant-indie rock involving 3 extremely original artists.

10.00 – DELICATE STEVE

Hardly delicate, Delicate Steve‘s music is completely self assured in its eccentricities. Blending trippy percussion loops with catchy avant-garde rhythms, he’s tearing up the pop rulebook, and creating a buzz that has been felt down the turnpike and throughout the five boroughs. This video won our nonexistent 2010 "Video of the Year" award.

9.00 – HEADLESS HORSEMAN

Headless Horseman is a band full of contradictions. While much of members Fareed Sajan and Conner O’Neill’s repertoire contains the intimate spookiness of Icelandic bands like múm and Sigur Ros, there’s also an immediacy in their recordings at home in their Brooklyn surroundings, bringing Sufjan Stevens and even Sleigh Bells to mind in songs like Sh8ker and Growing. Achieving large, sing-along moments over sparse guitar work, then moving without pause to mouse-like whispers rising over blaring electronics, this band deals exclusively in musical and emotional dichotomies.

08.00 – ARPLINE

Electro rock outfit Arpline have the ability to carve a very original electronic rock sound through an interesting use of arpeggiators. Early traces of MGMT are there, mixed with German post punk influences, creating a feeling of club basement badass mixed with synthesizers and dance jam goodies. Don’t miss their show tonight!

DEDE show canceledt!

We were just informed that DEDE won’t be able to play our show at Spike Hill tonight – that band got stuck in Phoenix because of flight related problems.
