Monahans’ Shadowbox @ SVT

Posted on:

Quirky Americana sound sculptors Monahans are presenting the somewhat mysterious Shadowbox this Sunday (12/5) at the Salvage Vanguard Theater, accompanied by Whiskey Priest. You can find nine of their 2010 recordings, released monthly since March, all available for download at Monahans.net. Presumably these will compose Shadowbox? Commenters are welcome to enlighten us. We know that’s our job, but it’s a collaborative age.

InnerCourse World AIDS Day Awareness Benefit w/Black Thought’s New Side Project Money Making Jam Boys & Much More at The Blockley Dec. 1

Posted on:

Man, Philly fuckin’ rules! There are way too many good shows tonight and somethin’ for everyone’s flava. For all you hip hop heads, The Blockley has plenty of what you are looking for, and it’s for a good cause – InnerCourse World AIDS Day Awareness. The RootsBlack Thought will be taking the stage tonight with his new side project Money Making Jam Boys, which features Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R.N. and Atlanta transplant STS (Sugar Tongue Slim). Check out their new debut music video for “Judgement Day” below, which was directed by Samuel Rogers. They’ll also be joined by local natives Kuf Knotz (all recovered from emergency dental surgery) and Germantown’s Writtenhouse as well as North Carolina’s Big Pooh (from Little Brother). Now, that’s a stacked bill. Glad to see that the local hip hop community is finding their way into more Philly venues (still not enough though – in my humble opinion). The Blockley, 3801 Chestnut St., 9pm, $7 adv/$10 door, 21+ (Illustration by Eric Jordan) – H.M. Kauffman

An American Chinese & Univox w/Naked Hearts at DDG Dec. 1 (GREAT!)

Posted on:

An American Chinese, who were kind enough to help melt our collective faces at The Deli Anniversary Show at JB’s, are making a triumphant return to Danger Danger Gallery tonight. The last time I wrote about them playing DDG I was lamenting over the seemingly endless wait for their much-anticipated debut full-length Utopian Tree and finally they have answered my prayers. Well, it has been out for a few months now, but the cuts still sound fresher than ever and will provide for an awesome set of music that will intertwine their new cuts along with the fan favorites from their Pilgrims Progress EP. The songs meander under lo-fi currents of acoustic guitars and blown-out vocals of frontman Mitch Marzec. AAC’s tunes have pop tendencies and catchy male-female call and responses, but they are often undertones to their garage-folk masterpieces. A driving pop standout like “Metropolitan” is tinged with nostalgia by recalling acts like The Kinks and Violent Femmes. Similarly, the paranoid guitar riff and vocals of personal favorite “Indian Punk” recalls the crazy genius songwriting of David Byrne. This set will most likely be a warm-up for their long-awaited and belated CD Release Party on January 6 at KFN w/Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies and When I Was 12. The guys and gals of AAC are in good company tonight with another Deli favorite in Univox. The petshop punks are sure to bring much guitar thrashing and harmonious singing to the gallery. Hopefully Kent “The Crippler” Boersma will wear some awesome costume again, but regardless he will bring his blasting beats and infectious stage presence to the show. Univox recently played our showcase during Philly FM Fest where they debuted their video for “Conan” and blazed through their set despite having stayed up all night finishing the video. So whether or not these guys have had any sleep they will be sure to bring their A game. Our local buddies will also be joined a NYC Deli favorite Naked Hearts. Don’t miss out on this great show with great bands at a great venue. GREAT! – Danger Danger Gallery, 5013 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, All Ages – Adam G.

White Apple Tree releases Peach Hat EP

Posted on:

It’s not all that often that I hear a band that labels themselves as new wave actually sound like new wave. White Apple Tree is one of those bands, conjuring up images of legwarmers and those color changing neon shirts. While they still retain the 80’s swagger of their brethren, they keep the energy up on their newest EP released earlier in November, Peach Hat. I’m not going to lie, but I think "Youth II" will be on heavy rotation on my car stereo, and I can recommend the same for the rest of you. Seriously, crank it up; it’s fine if you get some dirty looks from old people, they don’t know any better.

Rewards operate in a similar territory as Pfenning’s parallel project, but here the luxurious and inventive synth pop distinguishes itself for a slightly darker and moodier edge.

With the release of their upcoming EP "The Burrows" (Releasing on December 11th) Carbon Tigers may be new to the Chicago music scene, but not for long. With buzz being created via social networking, internet radio and flat out hard work, this five piece band consisting of: Chris Wienke [Keys/Vox], Nick Cudone [Guitar], Matt Irizarry [Guitar], Aaron Sweatt [Bass] and Jeff Simonelli [Drums] are making a name for themselves across the country.

Carbon Tigers have played packed rooms to sold out shows, at some of Chicago’s most prestigious venues such as The Beat Kitchen, Bottom Lounge, Metro, Reggies, Schubas, Subterranean, Elbo Room, several shows on campus at Columbia College and select states on the East Coast. They’ve opened up for several national acts including Maritime, Netherfriends, Kilimanjaro, and The Cool Kids, as well as having many headlining shows. From the Deli’s NYC open blog: Ultraviolet Astronomy

Posted on:

Weaving together new wave designs and synthpop sounds, Ultraviolet Astronomy create graceful melodies that soar over dissonant chordal structures; a hard percussive cornerstone ignites dancefloor madness while the dreaminess of the synths inspires introspection; the result is by turns melodious and harsh, agitated and soothing. Sick Cell is Angelo Tursi’s creation – look for big things to come from them with their energetic and hypnotic dance beats. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

Chris Young takes rap back to the glorious West Coast days

Posted on:

Chris Young’s delorean is humming in your driveway.  You were trying to make a fluffernutter sandwich, but you kept getting distracted by the funky jams blasting from his windows at full volume.  Now you’re dancing in your driveway and all the neighbors are coming to join you.  While so many rappers are trying to build some crazy cybernetic future version of hip hop, Chris Young is taking you back to 1991.  The EP is a solid representation of an early 90’s West Coast hip hop vibe.  Funky, upbeat production matched with witty and masterful lyricism make a great first impression that’s perfect for either dancing in your driveway or if you’re just stuck in traffic.  Visit chrisyoungtherapper.bandcamp.com to download the ep for free. – BrokeMC

NYC punks Shapes play Cake Shop on 12.17

Posted on:

Touting their music as gutter glam, the nightcrawling NYC sextet known as Shapes embody the sounds of the DIY hipster rock scene while showcasing a freewheeling buoyancy which permeates across their raucous five-track offering I FEEL…THEREFORE I DRINK. Commencing contagious melodies with a garage rock engine pumping out The Stooges’ attitude, My Chemical Romance’s catchiness and the The Ramones’ simplicity blended with a shot of punk pizzazz via Dead Boys and Sex Pistols, this troupe keeps the energy level at fever pitch and still hold it all together musically, fueling their odes to after hours with whatever substance they can get their paws on and a side order of the down and dirty rock ‘n roll that made NYC infamous (“Bash!”). You can see Shapes live at Cake Shop on  12.17. – Mike SOS

Birds of Maya Lookin’ for Prey at KFN Dec. 1

Posted on:

Listening to Birds of Maya incites a certain spontaneous, enthusiastic splendor that can only be matched by their vigilant, fervent worship of protracted blues-soaked hard rock epistles. While this three-piece crafts complex slow-burners that drag like a Marlboro Red, their sound is anything but lackluster. In fact, it’s balls-to-the-walls rock – a bedlam of crude electric vibrations and trouncing garage kick starts that drapes rightly as the backdrop to what will be the best (or, at the very least, wildest) night of your life. But don’t forget to warm up first with bill mates Taco Leg and Watery Love, otherwise you’re just gonna be aching in the morning. You shouldn’t snooze on this one because with the growing interest in Mike Polizze’s Purling Hiss, you never know when Birds of Maya will pop up again. (Bummer – looks like Home Blitz dropped off the original lineup.) Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St, 8pm, $6, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia
