Mister Tang at Record Room 8.16

Posted on:

The explosive garage rock group, Mister Tang, has added a bassist to their vessel. The low frequencies float in a deep ocean of lo-fi swells over chartering heavy guitar and  "greasy" beats. Stone’s voice is a controlled zephyr, curling up on the ends with high and mighty howls and sometimes riotous harmonies. All that drifting psychedelia is dominated by their surfy garage sounds as they blast out mischief and youth. Imagine your own stunts, car chases and running aground on a rocky beach full of crazy kids and you’ll come close imagining their live show. Check them out tonight at Record Room to experience the latest incarnation of the Tang Legacy. – Brandy Crowe

All fancy language and descriptions aside, all three of these bands simply rock in the true sense of the word. The raw energy of each, the sheer electricity will be more than enough to have anyone riding the lightning. This is a triumphant trio of bands you won’t want to miss! – Cory Huennekens

The Lower 48 Record Release Party at Doug Fir 8.16

Posted on:

Portland’s energetic folk rockers, The Lower 48, have developed their sound into vintage rock and roll with soul and have a new album to prove it. Drawing away from laid-back acoustic songs, the band has taken on a ’60s pop twist (somewhere along the lines of Buddy Holly and the Rolling Stones) and kept the harmonious vocal lining that places The Lower 48 on top of the curve in this city’s scene. Aside from a premier sound, they know stage performance well. All three members of the band move around, trade instruments, and the drummer has even been known to stand up and blow on the trumpet. The new album was released in stores this past Tuesday and the party for the album is at the Doug Fir on Friday. The Doug Fir is full of 60s aroma and tomorrow night will be no exception as bluesy rockers Tango Alpha Tango are on the bill as well. – Colin Hudson

Outer Space Heaters at Ash Street Saloon 8.15

Posted on:

These days the people of Portland are no strangers to groups that pigeonhole themselves into the surf-rock genre yet, as with most genres, our music scene has a way of churning out bands that find ways to twist familiar sounds into something different entirely. This is what Outer Space Heaters have done with their latest release, Desolate Surf. The album starts out grounded on Earth with a spaghetti-western riff that launches into a driving, dynamic sound that is anything but terrestrial. As the instrumental pieces progress they send you flying past booming asteroids and shifting into a distorted warp drive while the rhythms ride the tail of a comet. Eventually you find a place in orbit around a reverb-drenched star by the  named of “Pulsar.” Sound like a journey you’d like to venture on? Then get to Ash Street Saloon on Thursday night to see Outer Space Heaters live, you can also listen to Desolate Surf in it’s entirety on their bandcamp page. – Benjamin Toledo

Towering Trees at Kelly’s Olympian 8.8

Posted on:

Towering Trees play steady pop riffs with an edge, akin to The Strokes rocking in a garage… then Morrissey shows up. The brooding vocals dig deeper, songs deal with inconsistencies of self, problems with social expectations, and social norms surrounding sexuality and gender. To deal with those issues, a lot of songs are also concerned with drinking. The band currently has two EP’s under their belt and have mere days left in a Kickstarter campaign to master, press, and print their full length work in progress, Hangover Hearts, which so far, sounds well-rounded and more upbeat. See for yourself; catch them at Kelly’s Olympian tonight with Muscle & Marrow and Pony Village, then pay a visit to their Kickstarter page. – Brandy Crowe

Beisbol Premiere Video for “Nothing Strange”

Posted on:

Beisbol have just dropped a new music video to accompany the addictive, synth-heavy pop track, “Nothing Strange,” off of their latest release, lo-fi cocaine. Filmed in the band’s hometown of Hemet, California the intriguing video depicts a character experiencing alternate versions of his life; seemingly uninterested in either. Watch the video below and be sure to check out Beisbol’s website for all things related to this catchy indie-pop duo. – Benjamin Toledo

AgesandAges at Rontoms 8.4

Posted on:

Agesandages is a relentlessly harmonic band that has somehow managed to make 7 people singing at the same time sound like something effortless and joyful. With the heart of a choir and the instrumentation of a rock band they breath some new life into an americana sound with complicated and competing layered vocals that manage to work together to tell a beautiful story. The true allure of Alright You Restless, Agesandages debut album, is that while the songs offer a musical and lyrical range, they all share an undeniable movement that keeps the crowd swaying. On August 4th Rontoms Sunday Sessons will be hosting Agesandages as well as Blue Cranes, an experimental jazz band that is amazingly talented and has a unique voice that always lands on something completely it’s own. No cover, doors open at 8. – Joy Pearson

No More Parachutes at East End 8.1

Posted on:

No More Parachutes are conduits of an explosive energy. Through their punk-infused rock anthems the trio showcase a driven kineticism balanced by dynamic arrangements and a youthful nostalgia. Vocals reminiscent of ‘90s punk revivalists offset the melodic guitar movements in tracks like “Prince William” and “Dads and Grads” while steady bass rhythms and relentless drumming dominate “Magic Jordan” and “Valentino”. Music in this vein is always better experienced live, and thankfully there is more than one opportunity to see No More Parachutes in the coming weeks. You can catch them tomorrow night at East End and on August 16th at Kenton Club. Go and enjoy the free-falling tunes that this talented trio produces. – Benjamin Toledo
