Safari Room have pounded the musical pavement throughout 2019, releasing singles and live sessions, playing shows throughout the city, and working on new material. In June, they plan to trek through the Midwest to perform a handful of shows. But for now, Safari Room will stay in Nashville to play The Basement on May 31st. Hari the Band joins the bill; they too have kept busy throughout the year, planning to release an EP in June. Stay tuned for news about that. At the beginning of May, Robert and Scott Cerny — who play music as The Cerny Brothers — released their newest LP Looking For The Good Land, a disc full of heartland rock that will strike the heartstrings of any Springsteen, Tom Petty, or Neil Young fan. Their music video for "American Whore" even pays a bit of tribute to Springsteen’s "Born In The U.S.A."; the critical lyrics and driving refrain, along with the American flag backdrop, help pay into the likeness. The Cerny Brothers will take the stage at 3rd & Linsley on May 26th for a special Memorial Day weekend performance; it’s part of a series of dates in support of Looking For The Good Land. For those waiting for new music from indie rockers *repeat repeat, the wait is over soon: The band will release their newest record Glazed on May 31st, and will celebrate the release with a show at 3rd and Linsley on June 2nd. *repeat repeat have had an incredible year so far, what with the release of the music video for their single "Hi, I’m Waiting", playing SXSW, and having The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney produce tracks for their upcoming album. The Black Keys will play a big role in the lives of *repeat repeat later this year, as both bands with tour with Modest Mouse this fall. Local favorites Roots of a Rebellion will release their new record Shapes of a Soul on May 31st. The reggae-dub rockers haven’t slowed down while recording their latest album; known for playing well over a hundred shows per year, the band has already toured around the country for months promoting their new songs, and they have performances booked well into the rest of May and June. They’ll come home for a show at EXIT/IN on July 20th; until then, they’ll head west to Monterrey to play the California Roots X festival with bands like Slightly Stoopid, Tash Sultana, and more. Local indie rock artist Jen Starsinic will perform at The Cobra on May 20th, as part of a bill with visiting artists. Starsinic has played around the city over the last few years, evolving her sound from a sparse indie folk to a more full-band oriented alternative rock. Catch her performing alongside Texas troubadour Hill Country Devil, Detroit-based roots rocker Libby DeCamp, and local butcher and musician The Singing Butcher. Alt-rock group Sons Of Our Fathers splashed into the Nashville scene last September with their single "Harness", and they’ve kept themselves busy around the city since. On May 17th at The Cobra, the band will lend their heavy sound to pay tribute to the music of Weezer; you’ll have to attend to see how lead vocalist Rodney Noffsinger channels his inner Rivers Cuomo. The event, which marks the 25th anniversary of Weezer’s Blue Album, also features local bands like Dad Hats, Pretty Ravens, and Ghost Town Remedy; call your friend Jonas, get out your Buddy Holly glasses, and wear your favorite sweater, and go see these bands at The Cobra on May 17th. Songwriter Bre Kennedy plays the Musicians’ Corner on May 25th to mark the release of her single "Strings Attached". "Strings Attached" has bits and pieces of dream pop, indie folk, and Americana driving it. Perhaps its closest major-label relative musically is Shania Twain’s "You’re Still The One", although the two songs are opposites when it comes to lyrics. On "Strings Attached", Kennedy sings of old pain from a relationship, reckoning with a hole in her heart, and learning to rise while she carries the load of lost love. Tyler Boone has had a busy year, between releasing an EP, lending his name to a brand of bourbon, and hosting the Charleston Songwriters Festival in his South Caroline hometown. But the Nashville-based musician will take off on a Boone’s Bourbon-sponsored tour this June, performing all over the Southeast throughout the first part of the month. He’ll return to Nashville on June 5th to play The Basement with Southern Gothic and Uncle Duane’s Band on the bill. Boone’s latest EP, Jealousy, came out this past January, and includes the bluesy title track which has racked up the listens on radio and Spotify. Take a listen to "Jealousy" below. – Will Sisskind

Though he joined the Nashville scene just a couple of years ago, 20-year-old Rylan Talerico a.k.a. Brother Sundance has made a splash in the city’s and national pop scene. His 2018 EP Honey got him millions of streams on Apple Music and nationwide attention, and his first major-label debut, called I HURT YOU, I MADE THIS., will come out this fall. Talerico’s first single from the album called "Monsters" — on which he sings and plays all of the instruments — showcases the dark anti-pop that sounds like it could have come from a studio filled with producers. But aside from contributing vocalist Ella Boh, Talerico’s work as Brother Sundance remains a solo project which seeks to push limits. Check out the video for "Monsters" below. – Will Sisskind

Molly Parden shows up at the top of The Deli’s Nashville charts quite a bit, so we thought we should share that she’ll play at The Basement on May 20th. Parden has bounced around the Northeast and Midwest over the past month; her Spring tour around the States will take her to the Northwest and Southeast before she returns home to Nashville. At her Basement show, fellow artists and friends Madi Diaz and Zoe Sky Jordan will join Parden on the bill. Catch this show and you may also hear some new tracks. Coming up in Nashville’s R&B and hip-hop scenes is dnny, an athlete-turned-musician who has two singles shooting up the charts on Spotify. The latest track, a friend-zone inspired song called "way wrong", features Tampa-based hip-hop duo Xuitcasecity on lyrics and beats, showing how dnny has already started to make connections and waves in the national scene. dnny will take the stage to launch his brand at Exit/In on May 24th on a bill with other Nashville-based pop artists Kat Saul and Joe Daccache. Born in Boston but now based in Nashville, John Shakespear will release an album dedicated to his shared identities on May 10th called Spend Your Youth. The indie folk record covers John’s coming-of-age story as the son of an Argentinian father and a Boston-born mother, a Catholic boy doubting his religion in Sunday school, and an aspiring artist in the buttoned-up Ivy League. Devon Dawson produced the album, and Greg Giorgio mixed; the latter has worked with notable artists like Kurt Vile, The National, and Sharon Van Etten.
