Ticket Giveaway: Deathfix w/ Pinback @ 9:30 Club 9/15

Posted on:

(From 930.com) "Deathfix formed in 2009 after Brendan Canty (Fugazi) and Rich Morel (Morel, Blowoff) met while touring in Bob Mould’s band. Having discovered a shared affinity for the sounds of 1972 – particularly glam and progressive rock – they started getting together to work on music at Canty’s warehouse studio space. Two years later, hoping to graduate the band from its studio-shut-in phase to its live ensemble phase, they recruited multi-instrumentalists Devin Ocampo (Faraquet, Medications) and Mark Cisneros (Medications) to hold down the rhythm section." And now they are on tour with Pinback!

9:30 has teamed up with us to get one Deli reader a couple spots on the list to this show happening on Sunday 9/15! All you have to do is email us by 3 PM on 9/9 and tell us your favorite Deathfix track. Please include your first and last name for guest list requirements. The winner will be emailed back. Tickets are still available here.

Interview with Dead Fame: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (August)

Posted on:

We need more coverage of Richmond here on DC’s Deli, hands down. I mean, with bands like Dead Fame killing it down there, we know that Richmond continues to reign as one of VA’s best music cities. Dead Fame’s dark wave post-punk sound has been perfected and showcased on their first EP Frontiers (2011,) and a single released early 2013 that you can check out below. Oh, and as mentioned- they are our band of the month with major support from their growing fanbase. We wanted to learn more about the bunch comprised of KC Byrnes (guitar,) Eric Klemen (drums,) Sadie Powers (bass,) Michael Means (vocals,) and Christopher DeNitto (synths.) Here they tell us about chance meetings at dance parties, upcoming festival performances, and Swedish pop. Now onto the interview…

You can catch Dead Fame live on Sept. 6 at the Hippodrome Theater in Richmond at the Fall Line Fest with Cold Cave and Neon Indian.

Ticket Giveaway & Interview with Luray

Posted on:

(photo by Le Feng) The sounds of Luray’s first album, The Wilder, are both ethereal and earthly, the sound of the sun reflecting on grass, and the breeze caressing wildflowers. Named after the town in Virginia, Shannon Carey (Luray’s songwriter and delicate evocative voice) translates her experiences in Virginia and DC perfectly to record. “It’s tall grass, wildflowers, rolling green hills, endless fields and cows grazing in the valley hit me at the time when I discovered these songs were within me, and I was coaxing them into form. The lush life in the Shenandoah Valley in early spring helped convince me that the songs were worth writing.”

A transplant from California, Shannon comes from a musical family. “I always played music. My family does music. My parents are both musicians and my brother plays drums for Bon Iver.” But after going to college for social work, she stopped playing music, until a fateful night. “I had a dream about playing the banjo. I was living in California. I had a dream that I got a guitar, but I was wishing that it was a banjo, and I had never really thought about that before. And when I woke up I thought ‘I want a banjo.’” Click here for the rest of the interview. -Natan

You can catch Luray live on Aug 24th at Sixth and I Historic Synagogue. We’ve teamed up the venue to get one lucky Deli reader two spots on the guestlist! All you have to do is email us by 3 PM on Aug 12 and let us know your favorite Luray song.  Please include your first and last name for guest list requirements. The winner will be emailed back.

Album of the Month: Klauss “Totems”

Posted on:

From Charlottesville VA comes the alternative garage pop band Klauss who released their debut album Totems in July of 2013. Blending a variety of indie elements from acoustic to garage, each track stands on its own, and fits perfectly amongst a playlist full of Grandaddy and Neutral Milk Hotel.

One of my favorite tracks "I Shot a Deer" is a soothing guitar laden gem paired best with a beer while tubing down the Shenadoah River. Check out the entire album and maybe you’ll find the lazy summer day soundtrack that’s been missing in your life. –Dawn

Here they talk about building the scene, K-rock, and their most memorable performance yet. Onto the interview…
