The Missouri Pacific delivers powerful message in new music video for “Heartland”

Posted on:

Yes, the music video for NH-based The Missouri Pacific’s “Heartland” (streaming) is as graphic as you think, and we love it. The band’s big sound, comprised of swelling trumpets, a sensuous bassline, and a quirky vocal delivery, is perfectly paired with New England’s unmistakable landscapes (Red Arrow spotted: so good). The drums are pounded on fast and fantastically, and the beats change enough to keep the listener entertained, within all of the fun it may be easy to miss the vital message rooted in the song. The 7 billion trees cut down each year around the world should be an alarming statistic for anyone, and The Missouri Pacific chose a powerful and quite symbolic way to remind us, for that we thank the group. – Rene Cobar

Black Beach previews upcoming album with noisy single “Sometimes This Body Lets Me Down”

Posted on:

Harsh, loud, disturbing, and plenty entertaining is "Sometimes This Body Lets Me Down" the latest single from Boston post-punk rockers Black Beach. The grainy song features all the ire of bursting drums, mangled guitar riffs, and swelling vocal cords—think Black Sabbath and Rage Against the Machine in a fiery car crash. The single is a thorny preview of the band’s upcoming record Tapeworm due out October 11th. Black Beach is known for its penchant for doom-laced tunes and its flirtations with grunge disruptions; the energetic single is a promise of more madness to come. We are streaming "Sometimes This Body Lets Me Down" below to agitate your weekend. – Rene Cobar

A Deli Premiere: “Cup b/w Coffee” by Divorce Cop

Posted on:

Portland, Maine’s Divorce Cop sucker-punches you with a unique brand of noise rock, and somehow you are not mad. The band mauls drum sets, deforms basslines, and sings with drunken cheer in its raucous dual single "Cup b/w Coffee." The brand new two-headed sonic monster may be short, but its sound is frightful-delightful fun. "Cup" is unhinged drum pounding accompanied by a sensitive string-instrument melody, together they rise like dirty spume and let drip a lively chorus and a gooey bassline. "Coffee" leans more indie, but keeps the noise high: the track is turbulent, exciting, and the dynamic electric guitar work cannot be overlooked. The dual single release show is set for this evening at the Apohadion Theater in the band’s hometown. The 7" is out now via Salty Speakers, and us here at the deli are thrilled to premiere the tracks for you below. – Rene Cobar

The album is a jazz euphoria that you wish would never end, each song immerses you deeper into the group’s lush soul fusion. The album’s title track provides the kind of jazz atmosphere that melts the body into the nearest couch, in complete happiness; the bass is just that smooth, the sax that elegant. The snappy snare in "Touch" draws you into a slow dance groove, and deeper you go. Somos pay tribute to their late guitarist Phil Haggerty

Posted on:

We are sad to report that one of New England’s own, Phil Haggerty, has passed away, the Somos guitarist was 28. The Boston-based band, heartbroken as it is, stepped up by releasing their initially fall scheduled album Prison On A Hill early. The album’s proceeds went toward the family’s funeral expenses, with an additional $3,000 donated to the Heather Heyer Foundation. The band’s sound has always been characterized by its high-energy and no-holds-barred approach. The group’s latest single "Mediterranean" is a prime example of the massive sound of Somos: string instrument swells, heavy drums, and Haggerty’s electric guitar work fuel the single. Our support is with the Haggerty family and the remaining band members during this difficult time. We are streaming "Mediterranean" below. – Rene Cobar

EJ Carey debuts heartfelt single “Rising Tides, Crashing Skies”

Posted on:

The enthusiastic singing of Boston’s EJ Carey hooks you ten seconds into her new single "Rising Tides, Crashing Skies." As the charming acoustic guitar overture makes way for the song’s lush harmonies, Carey ramps up the vocal intensity to deliver a powerful message in the chorus: a declaration of emancipation from a toxic relationship. EJ puts a piece of her heart in every lyric, allowing the vibrant red passion of her words to carry the song beside dynamic drums and gushing electric guitar embellishments. The pop-rock genre that EJ embraces is tailored for today’s chart-topping-music scouts, and the tinge of country helps too. It is the artist’s honesty that shines through and engages the listener for an experience that is a textbook example of music’s absorbing power. EJ Carey recently completed several gigs throughout Massachusetts, the last of which was in Winthrop. A new album is in the works, and we are excited about that. Oceans of the Moon is ready to hypnotize you, sold out show at Sinclair 10.16

Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, Oceans of the Moon is the kind of group that demands your full attention. Take the band’s music video for its single “Blowing My Mind” as a solid example of its experimental music’s ability to entrance. The footage flashes various objects set to a commercial all-white background as the synths and guitars simmer. The vocals, seemingly on a loop, melt into the mind as the carousel of objects lures you deeper into the video, before you know it, you are hitting that “Replay” button. It is the combination of ominous sounds, fierce vocals, and a deceptively groovy beat that keeps the listener swirling in the band’s electronic vortex.
