From The Deli NYC’s submissions: N Y T Y L Y

Posted on:

If you’ve ever wondered what it might sound like to listen to the biggest selling pop music from another planet, you’d do well to check out nytyly, an artist who truly has her own way of crafting extremely catchy electronic pop tunes. For her music, the Brooklynite utilizes not just her own electronic sets, but sometimes her own language as well. In latest track ‘harmony day,’ nytyly’ extends synth love to Jewish mysticism, creating a weird masterpiece I have yet to hear in any church. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Nicky Egan releases sophomore album ‘The 45 Homestead Project’

Posted on:

Soul crooner Nicky Egan’s sophomore full length release ‘The 45 Homestead Project,’ brings the singer even closer to the kind of sultry journeys she began exorcising on her last album. With a kind of Reba McEntire drawl, and an honest intimacy ready to lick any wound, new single ‘Left Unsaid’ comes on like a torch song tell-all. Set in the most sensual of hotel rooms (and its implied potential for sexy things to happen, as if in a separate world) the single’s video needs to be seen to be best appreciated. Check it out below and find our if Egan can recreate that magic atmosphere next time she plays live in NYC (dates here). – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

From The NYC submissions: Hannah & Maggie play Fat Baby on 10.09

Posted on:

The blue-eyed soul of folk-country duo Hannah & Maggie has as clear a vision for their sound as anything we’ve come across yet in New York’s unplugged circuit. Taking cues from the soft soul of Simon & Garfunkel, coupled with the ‘countrier’ moments of The Indigo Girls, these two singer-songwriters blend their voices together in a harmonious upshot to all things we can still admirably claim to love about America. From last record ‘Muscle & Bone’ comes the short stories found in the steel string dance of ‘Burlington, VT,’ or the softly lilting poetry dedicated to their friend in ‘Sara.’ Catch these ladies when they come around to Fat Baby to play on Wed, Oct 9th at 11pm. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Weekly Feature: Spirit Animal releases “Kingdom Phylum” EP on 10.01

Posted on:

Like any band sounding like some kind of hybrid fusion, as accurately described in their bio, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and LCD Soundsytem, Spirit Animal has the ability to get you moving. Offering a brand of dance/pop/funk-rock that will beat you senseless, the quartet made up of Steve Cooper, Ronen Evron, Paul Michel and Cal Stamp are known for their overwhelming stage presence and broad range of musical aptitude. The guys are set to release a four-song EP titled "Kingdom Phylum" on October 1st, a follow-up to their 2012 This Is A Test, which will include the aforementioned hit song. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor) – Link: Michael Haskoor’s Interview with Spirit Animal.

Pep brings Doo Wop back to NYC + release debut EP in December

Posted on:

Echoing the doo wop of 50s/60s girl groups, Pep is the embodiment of young America’s constant need to dance. Karys Rhea of Starlight Girls has immersed herself in an ever-growing collection of Shirelles, Shiffons and who knows what else, to pour out the pounding heartbeat behind her own ode to these vintage troupes. New single ‘My Baby and Me’ dives deep into this legacy and pours out a groove perfect for anyone in the mood to shake a tail feather.

Stay tuned for live shows coming this fall, a new EP on December 3rd, and listen to ‘My Baby and Me’ below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Two Seconds to Midnight album release Arlene’s on 10.05

Posted on:

You could say a lot of things about Two Seconds to Midnight. From powerful guitars, wood-chopping strings, and singer-songwriter Zig Payton’s towering alto. But what most immediately grabs me upon throwing on their last record ‘Architecture,’ is how many ideas these guys have.

As aggressive as they are soft and ethereal, Two Seconds to Midnight are natural forebears to the kinds of cinematic expeditions you’ve heard from Mogwai or Sigur ros. You never know what you’re going to get, and that’s why I had to make my way through the whole record before putting it down. The band’s self-titled sophomore release drops Saturday, October 5th. Pre-order today or pick it up at their Record Release show on the same day at Arlene’s Grocery (9:45 pm doors). – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

A Deli Video Premiere: Lily Virginia – ‘Yuriko”

Posted on:

Coupled with the fearless artistry of Kate Bush and the melodic openness of Annie Lennox, Lily Virginia sweeps into our ears with her uniquely danceable art pop.

Her latest single ‘pop pop pop!’ does for dance music what Tom Tom Club did for hip-hop. An unfiltered experience of art construction resting firmly on top of the catchiest grooves, and just about begging for a remix. As Lily says herself in the song: "I don’t want reality, so give me all your fantasies." Fair enough.

Her new video to ‘Yuriko’ characterizes an uncompromising spirit moving around psychedelic animations and whirling textures. Check it out below and join Lily for the music video release party, tonight (Sep 27th) at Culturefix – an experience slated to be complete with immersive media stations, a performance, and possible puppetry. Let’s hope so. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets).

Rubblebucket is back with EP “Save Charlie” + plays Rockwood on 10.01

Posted on:

Rubblebucket, one of the most fun NYC based band to witness live (and also on record), originated from the very jammy Vermont scene, but through the years progressively morphed its musical offerings into a form of pop that’s at once multifaceted, danceable and extremely enjoyable. They just released a new EP entitled "Save Charlie" – the title track is streaming below, but yo ucan stream it in its entirety here. They’ll be playing at Rockwood Music Hall on October 1 – a way too small venue for them.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
