Sharkmuffin talk about pedals + release split cassette with The Off White at Muchmore’s on 07.20

Posted on:

NYC-based Sharkmuffin creates punchy garage rock wrapped in a fuzzy, ’60s cool that is at once feminine and fearless. On the heels of a new album release, the band is about to celebrate the release of a split cassette with fellow NYC garage revivalists The Off White at Muchmore’s on July 20th. Tarra Thiessen (guitar/vox) and Natalie Kirch (bass/vox) also gave our sister blog Delicious Audio an in-depth look into the meaning behind their latest tracks, and the delicious array of pedals they use to help create their frenetic tunes. Check out single "Leather Gloves, streaming below, and the interview about the creative process, at the link below.

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Blushed

Posted on:

Philly’s Blushed seems to have come together the way many bands do in burgeoning DIY music communities. Fledgling artist (Missy Pidgeon) moves to the city, and meets like-minded musician (Matty Klauser) at a local show, who eventually introduces her to another classically-trained music friend (Alyssa Milman). They “gel nicely,” and start a band. With merely two released demos under their belt, we look forward to hearing what they’ll do with their free mastering and recording studio time prizes from our generous and supportive sponsors APS Mastering and Sleepless Sound. However, before that happens, feel free to learn more about our recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner HERE.

In tribute to Sofia Coppola, Super Fan 99 is releasing a compilation covering songs featured in her films. Queen of Jeans contributed their take on Gwen Stefani’s “Cool,” which can be found in the movie, Somewhere. The song retains its fresh-air, synth-pop calm, with a slight mellowed tone. The ladies and gent are also scheduled to perform at this year’s Made In America Festival in September. (Photo by Bob Sweeney)

Black Helicopter Release New EP Everything is Forever

Posted on:

Boston alt-rockers Black Helicopter are back with a 4-song EP full of their patented melodic, melancholic fuzz.  Invoking the best of bands like Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins, Everything is Forever is an impressive showcase of the bands eclectic talent.  Opening track "And I>Drive at Night" has a gritty, aggressive, yet understated character personified by vocalist Tim Shea’s brooding narrative.  That mood persists and develops through the album, giving the EP a feeling of completion, while leaving the listener wanting more. -Brian Varneke

Fraternal Twin joins Stolen Jars, Thelma, and Poppies at silent barn july 11th

Posted on:

While we were still sobbing over the touchingly soft 2015 release of Skin Gets Hot, Fraternal Twin‘s debut album, Brooklyn Native Tom Christie went ahead and broke our hearts all over again. The sophomore release of "Homeworlding" in 2016 provided 10 more songs of even sweeter thoughtfulness. On that record, Christie went somewhat pop, covering all our favorite issues (space, ghosts, and nature), on songs like "Big Dipper," "Favorite Ghost," and "White Wind." Adding a handful of minor chords to each of those topics, "Homeworlding" turned into a fitting stay-in-bed album. Now in 2017, Fraternal Twin catches our attention again with their July tour. See them at Silent Barn July 11th with Stolen Jars, Thelma, and Poppies. -Allie Miller

New Sheer Mag LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

The official release date for Sheer Mag’s full-length debut via Wilsun RC is July 14. However, the wait is over; Need to Feel Your Love is here courtesy of NPR’s First Listen. The album immediately adheres as juxtaposing, ready-to-rumble grit is countered by sweetened, soulful vocals. Meshing that tough vulnerability with short-fused guitar licks and grimy infectious grooves, Sheer Mag unleashes a polished, pugilistic power, while demonstrating an ability to adjust and adapt over a course of sonic settings.

Showtime Goma (of Sunny Day in Glasgow) turns pop on its head with her new album Smiley Face. Experimenting with different soundscapes, distortions, airy pop vocals, her new record moves in a dozen different directions that all flow together seamlessly. There is the dancey “Big Disaster” (video streaming below,) the slow “Propel,” the experimental “Chug,” and more. Jen Goma’s noteworthy vocal and artistic range shine through in this record, making her an artist to watch. Evan Lanam and The Live Oaks is a rowdy folk rock and roll outfit from the San Francisco Bay Area. Hailed by some as the “Anderson Paak of folk music,” Lanam fills his band with friends and plays whenever and wherever he can. The band just wrapped a three-show residency at The Boom Boom Room that spanned over a month and a half, but they aren’t slowing down. Catch them next at the Uptown Nightclub in Oakland, CA Back Focus by Evan Lanam & the Live Oaks

New Track: “Missing Parts” (Jeff Pianki Cover) – Seagulls

Posted on:

Seagulls recently issued a compilation of acoustic cuts and covers, Answering Machine: Acoustic and Undercover. You’ll find a cover of Jeff Pianki’s “Missing Parts” kicking off the collection. The warmth of vocal harmony slices through the reflective heartache/loneliness in the residual evening illumination.
