FYF 2017 preview: beloved local festival is one of this summer’s most diverse

Posted on:

In 2017, FYF will really prove their high stature as one of this country’s most laboriously-curated musical festivals. The Exposition Park-hosted event has had some of the today’s biggest acts, sure, but it also had to quicken the pace so it could keep up with the logistical demands it entails. Now that they’re practically veterans in the music festival market, a race that sees an increasing amount of choices year after year, the one reason why FYF continues to succeed is because it hasn’t lost sight of its core audience.

This year’s is also particularly notable for having easily one of the most diverse, and doing so while retaining their reputation as percipient tastemakers. A quick glance at the lineup shows they’re devoted to bringing aboard a rich array of legendary performers in one single weekend (Iggy Pop, Missy Elliott, Nine Inch Nails and Bjork), all while welcoming an impressive selection of sought-after critical darlings (Frank Ocean, Mitski, 6lack, Princess Nokia, Big Thief).

Since we primarily cover local artists, this preview will focus on shining the spotlight on the five local artists were most excited to see. We’re also proud to say that two of the artists featured on this list were covered at The Deli during their early days, so we’re delighted to see them perform among such a high-caliber roster.

1. Frank Ocean: Oh, Frank. You almost had us on 2015. Even if the prospect of seeing Ocean two years ago seemed unlikely from the start, we’re pretty confident that the elusive R&B megastar is going to impress after releasing 2016’s genre-defying release, Blonde. The time just wasn’t right, seeing as we honestly had no idea what he was up to at the time. Having Kanye West as pinch hitter while he was on the DL was quite the tall order, but in our heart of hearts, we really wanted Ocean all along. And our expectations couldn’t be any higher.

2. Moses Sumney: There’s a lot riding on Moses Sumney, an artist who was voted as our Best Emerging Artist of the year back in 2013! His genre-ending electro-soul has had us in awe for years now, but he hasn’t quite broken through yet despite his splendid last EP, Lamentations. But Sumney just brought to us a wonderful gift, entitled “Doomed”, a patiently spellbinding new single that has us really intrigued for his still-mysterious new project. His set is not to be missed, and should act as a primer for potential world domination.

3. Chicano Batman: Seeing as Los Angeles is a hub of multi-ethnic culture (I’m Puerto Rican myself), it’s fitting that FYF is beginning to acknowledge how much the Latino community also enjoys the independent persuasion. And having Mexican-American four-piece Chicano Batman is the perfect starting point, a band whose eclectic mixture of psychedelic rock deserves a larger audience.

4. Cherry Glazzer: Cherry Glazerr’s no-frills jams distill guitar rock to its barest and most pure, and with a touch of defiant feminism to boot. Hot on the heels of their latest LP, Apocalypstick, the hard-rocking trio are going to satiate the appetite of those who like their riffs heavy and their hooks sharp.

5. Flying Lotus: Around here, we like to make fun of how many times Ty Segall has attended FYF. (Note: too many for us to remember, but we really don’t mind.) And Flying Lotus comes at a not-so-distant second, but this time, he’s bringing a new set up made up of 3D Visuals. From what we’ve seen it’s quite the stunner, though honestly, we’re glad he’s actually incorporating his own material instead of playing another DJ set.

Brooklyn’s Sketchy bring unfiltered punk fun at Muchmore’s on 07.07

Posted on:

According to their Facebook, Sketchy is “5 dudes living in NYC that like pizza and alcohol… a lot.” Their most recent release is a split record with U.K. based band Burnt Tapes, featuring two tracks (“Normal” and “Whiskey And Coffee”) of fast-paced, punchy punk rock. Christopher Schultz on vocals is a force of nature, and he’s backed by arrangements that are powerful and unapologetic. The band will be playing at Muchmore’s in Brooklyn on July 7th with Sally Draper and The Toms. – Lilly Milman

Geddes The Sea provides a feel good soundtrack for the season with EP ‘Summer Vibes’

Posted on:

Released on the first day of the season, the EP Summer Vibes by Nashville’s Geddes The Sea (also known as Gavin Geddes) is exactly what the summer needed. Rooted in a playful, chamber pop sound, the EP soars through fun lyrics, horn riffs, staccato beats, and powerful harmonies. This is especially seen in "Sunrise" (streaming below) which opens the EP with an infectious melody and vocal arrangement reminiscent of other bouncy, alt-rock bands like Neon Trees. The theme of the release is overwhelmingly optimistic and light—all staples of a good summer pop album. –Lilly Milman

New Madalean Gauze EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Madalean Gauze recently released a new six-song EP Cool and Fun. An impending danger looms as the musical engine continues to rev and the swirl of peripheral vocals hauntingly shakes the foundation. Finding the sweet spot betwixt bright moments of mountaintop clarity and grittier, in-the-woods, unbending ferocity, the album is assertively aggressive and focused. Head out to Johnny Brenda’s on Friday, July 21 for a record release celebration that will also feature Haunted Homes and American Trappist! (Photo by Bob Sweeney)

Drop the Gun shares vivid music video “All I Want,” plays Baby’s All Right on 09.21

Posted on:

Danish multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire Sara Savery aka Drop the Gun has shared the music video for a single from her debut, self-titled EP. "All I Want" is boldly colored, eye-catching, and startling. Featuring cutaways of a superimposed face on Savery’s hands, lyrics flashing in front of clips and kaleidoscopic visual effects, the music video highlights the pop-electronic production of the song. The video taps into the depth behind the lyrics in a harsher, more pronounced light, getting to the root of the confusion the Savery aimed to portray in the song. "All I Want" displays inner turmoil on the screen, quite literally. Don’t miss her live performance at Baby’s All Right on September 21st. – Geena Kloeppel

Homebrew: fierce rock from Santa Cruz

Posted on:

Homebrew, the rag-tag five-piece metal/rock outfit from Santa Cruz, CA is anything but your typical band. Borrowing from the framework of bands like Metric and Evanesence, Homebrew is fronted by the fierce personalities of Alison Maupin and lead guitarist Matt Kotila. Bassist Nel Barrow joined the rest of the group in 2015, most of whom have been playing heavy music together since 2010. – Joshua D. Huver

El Mar is breezy yet heartfelt in “Drifting”

Posted on:

Brooklyn indie singer-songwriter El Mar may sound light-hearted and easy to listen to, but there’s a depth to her lyrics and tone that sparkles through. Her single "Drifting" is a gorgeous example of that delightful pairing of breeziness and feeling. A carefully balanced full-band arrangement with just the right hint of country/Americana textures shows that El Mar is finding her own voice in a world of songwriters that sometimes mulls together. "Drifting" certainly doesn’t sound like El Mar is drifting, actually, it feels like she’s headed in the right direction. -Geena Kloeppel

Sheep Shifter plays noisy rock you can headbang to

Posted on:

Approach with caution – the edges are sharp. Sheep Shifter is a mass of buzzsaw guitars and heart-pounding drums goaded into brutality by human cattle prod/vocalist Jonathan Nash’s depraved howls. Those familiar with Murfreesboro’s Sheep Shifter will confirm the caustic nature of their live show is nothing short of head-banging good time.-Sam Mattingly
