Dark Blue 7″ Record Release Show at PhilaMOCA March 4
With a band name like Dark Blue, you might expect to hear electronic music that is as vast and spacious as the ocean. That is until you learn that the band is made up of John Sharkey III (Clockcleaner, Puerto Rico Flowers), Andy Nelson (Paint It Black, Ceremony, etc.), and Mike Sneeringer (Purling Hiss, The Loved Ones). And once you hear the opening power chords ring out from the project’s debut single "Subterranean Man," coupled with Sharkey’s vocal delivery that finds itself somewhere between Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy and Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, you may have flashbacks of your days as a goth kid in your all-black attire. Dark Blue will be celebrating its first release, a two-song 7" that is available via Brooklyn indie label Katorga Works, at PhilaMOCA this evening, where they have also promised to unleash some new tunes. The veteran power trio will be joined by Wyncote, PA hardcore outfit Anxiety Hammer. And in keeping with with the the venue’s Tuesday night tradition, a screening of British horror film The Hunger (1983), featuring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon and directed by Tony Scott, will follow their performances. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Alexis V.
Breakfast Lunch & Dinner makes getting through your day “Easy”
Just as its name implies, Breakfast Lunch & Dinner is something you might want to incorporate into your daily routine. On its Easy EP, the New Hampshire band’s brand of indie rock is laid back and relaxed, but fun to listen to. For instance, check out the funky wah-wah guitar that breaks up the verses on the title track. When the set’s opener, “Yeah, Cool,” hints at surf rock, you can tell the guys are longing for summer – as just about all of us in New England are at this point. The band doesn’t have any shows lined up at this point, but stay tuned to their Facebook page on which they make no bones about it: “You just have to come to our shows and really see what we can do.” – Jake Reed
Mellow folk duo Take Berlin unveils video + plays Rock Shop on 03.04
Carrying a torch for the impossibly forward-thinking Kate Bush, Brooklyn/Berlin duo Take Berlin have recorded a cover of ‘The Fog’ – a song filled with mystery and romance – for their latest video. The group’s breezy, acoustic guitar based arrangement has a slow-moving, wistful Bossanova feel to it that’ll propel you to some far-off destination…. perhaps not Germany.
Along with their latest EP ‘Lionize,’ they’ve been charting new territory recently, which is saying a lot considering how well-traveled they already are. Watch ‘The Fog’ below and join them when they play Tue, March 4th at Rock Shop. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
Maps & Atlases // And And And // The We Shared Milk // 3.4.14
Pardon the shameless self-promotion but on Tuesday March 4, my very own band The We Shared Milk will share the stage at the Doug Fir Lounge with local drunken-power-pop favorites And And And, and Chicago’s experimental-math-popsters Maps & Atlases who will have a new album out April 17th. The show is part of a Red Bull sponsored concert series, Sound Select Presents: Portland, and the night’s lineup was curated by one of indy rock’s finest acts and certainly one of he biggest bands to come out of Portland, Portugal. The Man.
RSVP here for get into the show for $3. Doors at 8pm, but arrive early as the space will likely fill up quickly. – Travis Leipzig
New Music Video: “Variations” – Purples
Below is a new music video for "Variations" by Purples (ex-Teeth). In it, you’ll find drummer Jonas Oesterle getting quite a workout. We like to imagine that he’s training for the Feats of Strength part of Festivus. You’ll be able to find "Variations" on the band’s upcoming debut album Nancy, due out April Fool’s Day. Purples will also be performing this Thursday, March 6 at Kung Fu Necktie with TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb and Ron Gallo.
Cigarette Trees at The East Room 3.20
An exotic blend of instruments, voices, and beautiful lyrics is what Cigarette Trees are all about. The song “The Snows” is whimsical and almost from a transcendental realm, and even a little ominous. Their songs are theatrical and the lyrics are genius. They are the Cigarette Trees and they will be playing at the East Room on March 20. Their sound makes for a wonderful listening experience for everyone. You will not be disappointed! -Amanda Aydelott
Little Lo Come Back Out to Play
This lovely septet have been a bit quiet in preparation of their new album, but now they’re picking up steam again. If you saw Little Lo play Lambert’s this past Saturday (March 1), you were treated to a sneak peak since they played the new release in full. Let’s hear it for more heartwarming tunes. As for everyone else, check out their latest single ‘White Fields, White Noise’ and enjoy the uplifting riffs. -Written by Gillian Driscoll
1-800-BAND (a NYC band) announces debut EP “Diver Blue” + unveils first single
Coming up with a fun, original and memorable band name is – in a word – torture (been there, failed at that many times). 1-800-BAND is not just all of the above, it’s… a genius idea for a band name! Also because it perfectly fits the Brooklyn quartet’s slightly synthetic retro-pop, reminiscent of the Cars and other bands that were in vogue at a time when the good old land line phone was still inspiring hit songs (think Blondie). The band will be releasing their debut EP in April on Almost Ready Records (home to Liquor Store, Nobunny, Atlantic Thrills, etc), check out the title track ‘Diver Blue,’ streaming below.
