Eternal Summers to drop The Drop Beneath tomorrow!

Posted on:

Eternal Summers‘ greatly anticipated third album, The Drop Beneath, is being released tomorrow, March 4th (via Kanine Records). The trio from Roanoke have been working hard since the release of Correct Behavior in 2012, and have gained a dedicated following. The Drop Beneath promises to be only a slight departure from their previous work, featuring lusher tones and more input from their bass player (who was a new addition to the band for Correct Behavior). The album is already being streamed exclusively on Pandora, and you can listen to a featured track, Never Enough, below. The band is touring for the album, and you can see them locally at U Street Music Hall this Thursday, March 6th (with Cheatahs), before they join Pains of Being Pure at Heart for a tour of the south starting at Baltimore Popfest this Friday, 3/7, and then in Charlottesville, at The Southern, on 3/8. –Natan Press

Landlady plays Glasslands tonight (03.03) + heads to SXSW

Posted on:

We covered Brooklyn indie rock collective Landlady twice back in 2012, and after a rather uneventful 2013 (at least as far news or releases are concerned) the band announced in February to have joined Hometapes Records, home of Bear in Heaven and Megafaun among others. Led by busy man Adam Schatz (of Man Man and mastermind of Winter JazzFest), the group will be playing Glasslands tonight March 3rd with Zula, Friend Roulette and Star Rover, and then leave for a tour heading SXSW.

March Fourth

Posted on:

MarchFourth Marching Band is, of course, named for the date they began. It was the last time Fat Tuesday fell on the date eleven years ago in 2003. After throwing their first Mardi Gras party full of romping beats and brass, burlesque and revamped vaudeville, the group of 15-20 members did march forth.

They have always been DIY, parading through small festival circuits with infectious funk, rock, and astounding energy. The players, performers, and audience quickly meld together in jubilee with a quad of saxophonists, trumpets, band-geek drums, and a few guitars. And oh yeah, stilt-walkers! March Fourth is a tiny community of various instrumentalists, dancers, and acrobats; their performance is an epic choreography.

Back home after an extensive tour, this March 4th they rock their 11th anniversary with a Fat Tuesday spectacular at the Crystal Ballroom. There will be an all ages early show, followed by a night spectacle of  DJ’s, body painting, beads, and stilt-walker love triangles. There will be lots, and lots of dancing.

Is Classic Rock kewl again? The Bushwick Hotel

Posted on:

We’ll be honest: we’ve always had mixed feelings about classic rock revival bands. The genre though is being redeemed by the fact that almost every new band we hear these days is heavily referencing music of the past: psych rock, folk, soul, grunge and 80s disco revivals are all pretty hot right now, while the surf one seems to to have gone out of flavor. Because of this, bands playing classic rock feel more honest – and almost forward looking – than the ones chasing the latest trends, in particular when, like The Bushwick Hotelthey are good at what they do and can play in uncompromisingly ripping fashion. If on top of that you also get a well produced, super-sexy black and white video (for single ‘Graffiti of the Young Man’s Mind,’ streamiing), all reservations are wiped out: may the head banging begin! Check out the band’s newly released seven track album here, which will awaken the David Bowie fan in you.

Cheerleader Gearing Up for Varsity at KFN March 3

Posted on:

Lighthearted psych-pop five-piece Cheerleader is gearing up to make the trek to SXSW this year for the first time. The fledgling outfit only has a handful of shows and songs under its belt, but the band is made up of a group of experienced musicians, who have performed in such acts as Sun Airway, Former Belle and Shorty boy-boy, and has already gathered some nice buzz off its lead single "New Daze," a languid, instantly enjoyable indie-pop ditty that will be appearing on the group’s debut EP. They’ll be returning to Kung Fu Necktie this evening, the site of their first live performance, where they’ll be joined by Newark, DE dream-pop quartet Fiance and garage-psych crew The TeleVibes. Honey Wild opens for In The Valley Below at Rough Trade on 03.26

Posted on:

If Brian Jones had spent some time kicking it with Fela Kuti, he might have come up with something like Honey Wild. Named after Beach Boys’ thirteenth studio album ‘Wild Honey,’ the group carves out a path between noodle-y West Coast hippy jams and Ivory Coast afro-pop. And their new ‘AA-side’ single "Garden/Magnifique Innocent" (what they used to call a double-side hit back in the ’60s) covers this ground perfectly. The quartet is playing Rough Trade on March 26 opening for In The Valley Below. Be there and check out some of the catchiest summer jams you’ll hear all winter. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Wednesday night regulars at Dan McGuinness Pub might be tacking on a few more miles to their drive if they were attending for the sole purpose of seeing Dave Pahanish in action (unless they happen to be East Nasvillians.) The Deli Philly’s March Record of the Month: Guilty of Everything – Nothing

Posted on:
Guilty of Everything (Relapse) is the full-length debut of hard-rockin’, shoegaze quartet Nothing. Co-produced by Jeff Zeigler and the band’s Domenic Palermo and Brandon Setto, the record speaks to us through a skilled use of varying/dynamic instrumental tones, consistently juxtaposing Palermo’s soft, understated vocals with a musical outpouring that lushly pushes to the forefront.

“Hymn to the Pillory” leads in with a simple guitar progression; the accustomed hushed, whispering vocals giving a dreary sense of calm. However, it ushers in the first of many heavy instrumental displays, exploding percussion melding with distorted guitars, until we find Palermo’s airy voice reaching out to save us through the sea of chaos. “Bent Nail” is a quick-hitting, up-tempo surge that towards its conclusion spaciously spreads out, altering the aggressive compositon to a tranquil moment “if you feel like letting go.” Nothing continues to ride this peaceful wave with an undercurrent of familial themes amid bursts of serrated, distorted guitars and precise drumming in “Endlessly.” With a creepy, haze-riddled start, “Somersault” is lead by a shimmering wave of soothing guitar as the vocals assist to shape the song’s tone, before an agitated upturn escalates the intensity. While vocals remain at peace, the guitars flex. Opening the door to “Get Well,” Domenic Palermo leads in with the statement – “It’s easier than this.” The song finds the ideal point where the blending of those half-whispered, confessional vocals with a burning torch of music is both rough around the edges yet not ragged, resulting in a complete realization of force.

Guilty of Everything closes with its title track, a climber that takes its first steps with a circling guitar pattern and soothsaying vocals. However, as the song elevates, there is a walking tandem of guitar/percussion revealing an open cavernous element, before the band unleashes charges of instrumental dynamite, making its final statement on the album so apropos. Guilty of Everything is a record that confronts the gloomy darkness of life head on and comes through the other side in a cathartic state. It exhibits Nothing’s maturation and ability to weather both the calm and the storm, with the historically hard-livin’ group of former hardcore kids finally finding a more comfortable place close to the edge.

Nothing is celebrating the release of Guilty of Everything tonight at Kung Fu Necktie with Weekend and Cassavetes, which is sold out, but there will 25 more tickets made available at the door at 8pm. The album officially drops this Tuesday, March 4 via Relapse Records.  – Michael Colavita

Rio Grands Release A-Z

Posted on:

Use the Internet to your advantage while perusing new music and things get weird. Type in "Rio Grands" to find mostly extraneous information. Learn about that 1950s movie and the long river nowhere near the Pacific Northwest. After browsing menus from steakhouses and Mexican restaurants, the light at the end of the tunnel is gleaming so close you can feel it. That light translates well once the music starts. Rio Grands have already found a way to channel sunny and approachable vibes despite the conflicting surroundings. Close your eyes and imagine thriving beach parties. This Sunday, that party will take the form of the record release for A-Z at Rontoms, which has been two years in the making. Consider the build up and understand this is not something to be missed. – Colette Pomerleau
