Buffalo Clover, “Low Down Time”

Posted on:

Low Down Time is a lot like driving around just for the hell of it. There’s no destination, no complexity – just a ride, and you might be feeling like shit, but at least you’ve got a buddy and a drink at the end of it. Like its predecessors, the record is a mess of sonic colors – the love child of soul divas, some vaudeville actors, country barflies, rockers, rollers, swingers and those gypsies that stole everything from your car. But Buffalo Clover manages to string together the acts in this variety show, namely with a songwriting prowess that takes an interest in tales of woe and wanderlust.

On opener “Can’t Stand Still,” Margo Price spouts the archaic convention: “Women ain’t supposed to ramble/women ain’t supposed to drink,” then shrugs it off in favor of romantic speculations of finding rambling men to be with and stallions to ride. Low Down Time extends an invitation to the rambling types in a number of ways – when the band recalls the folky spirit present on their previous recordings, or when Price lays out her deal, then begs, “Tell me you aren’t the same” on “Cure Me.”

Buffalo Clover can swing country and blues jaunts (“Oklahoma,” “Saint Cathleen”) just as well as they can play the ragged and lonely card, like on the lovelorn drag, “Don’t Lie to Yourself,” whose cascading piano backdrop is fit for a western lounge act. “Nobody Cares” is another standout with guitars boiling down around Matt Gardner’s vocals, which take the lead to glowing female backup as they do on “Oklahoma.”

The record wanders into gaudy territory, like on the carnivalesque “Oh Well,” a brassy, kitschy number that could’ve been plucked from a trampy roadshow version of Grease. But anything goes. Maybe the complaints, stories and speculations of Low Down Time are genuine, or maybe it’s all just a big show, but it doesn’t matter either way. It’s a fun ride and a relatable one that can soundtrack roadside stops, short-lived trysts, low down time or just wandering around looking for something. – Jessica Pace

Buffalo Clover play the MusiCares benefit Sept. 10 at Exit/In’s 40th anniversary bash. Check out the video for “Saint Cathleen” here.

Up and coming bands we like: Slam Donahue play Cameo on 09.06

Posted on:

You may have seen Brooklyn pop trio Slam Donahue gigging at Brooklyn Bowl, Little Field, or The Cake Shope earlier this year. They have come out of the box strong, releasing a three track EP on their bandcamp site this January and now, thanks to their ambitious gigging and superb live performances are, “being courted to record an album.” Slam Donahue is an interesting blend of poppy vocal inflections, matched with upbeat drumbeats, and tantalizing synth lines, harkening us back to lovely 90s grooves concordant with The Cure, but matched with the fuzzy grunge of the likes of Dinosaur Jr. Make sure to check them out tonight, 9/6 (tonight!) at Cameo! – Ed Guardaro (@wangtungchufu)

Photo Recap: 215 Magazine/Vitamin Water Uncapped Live Showcase w/Sun Airway & Work Drugs

Posted on:

We made it out to the 215 Magazine/Vitamin Water Uncapped Live showcase with Sun Airway and Work Drugs this past Saturday. Corporate promotional events are usually a hit or miss, especially in relation to the bands and their audiences. We have to give mad props to the artists. It’s rather difficult for them to perform in a room where it seems at least half of the crowd is more interested in the free booze. We had a blast either way. We hope that they did too. It’s always a treat to see bands that you really dig for free. And throw in some free alcohol – forgettaboutit! The venue was very accommodating – though we think that all who attended could agree that we could have used a little less Vitamin Water decorations (and definitely without the cheesy V-shaped wannabe metal guitars). It kind of felt like a marketing company threw up all over the venue. The sound also unfortunately had its issues, but the bands still put on enjoyable performances. All in all – the event was a success. Fun was definitely had. And you can’t really hate on the price as well as the talent that you had a chance to experience. You can check out some of our photos from the evening HERE.

M. Women- A Show Playing Band

Posted on:

On August 27th I was down at Cairo, an art space near my favorite pub in Seattle, The Summit in Capitol Hill, to see Broken Water, and I caught a short, tight set by a new Seattle band called M. Women.  They’re a lo-fi pop/grunge three-piece that play catchy, driving tunes that swiftly sweep you up into their currents of cool.  They sound like a more mellow incarnation of The Vaselines.  M. Women are playing the Void in Portland on September 9th and Reed College on September 16th.  Make the drive, it’ll be worth it.

New solo EP from Low Vs Diamond guitarist

Posted on:

As the guitarist for the now disbanded Low Vs Diamond, Anthony Polcino has had a smooth transition to a solo career. After the LA-based Low Vs Diamond broke-up in early 2010, Polcino did not stay out of the music scene for very long. Under the name Soft Pipes, he released a debut full-length that same year and is now gearing up to release an EP on September 27th. The new release, called "Stay Pretty", is a collection of hazy and evocative songs. The music that Polcino writes has a tendency to place listeners in a dreamy state as his vocals trail on with a nebulous quality. At times the music seems fragile, but the instrumentation is kept interesting and does not lag or get boring in the least. On the contrary, the title track incorporates swift movement and screeching guitars. It is a good mix of sharp guitars an reflective vocals, much like what you would expect from bands like the Strokes. Polcino will celebrate the release of the EP on the day it becomes available with a show at The Satellite. Get a free download of "Sleeper", off the new EP, on PacSun Music. – Karla Hernández

yMusic Ensemble releases album with tunes by Annie Clark, Son Lux, My Brightest Diamond.

Posted on:

What happens when you give a couple of alt/indie artists’ access to a powerhouse chamber group to indulge their classical music fantasies? Apparently… quite a bit. Usually found as the strings and winds backing many of Brooklyn’s indie acts (Vampire Weekend, My Brightest Diamond, The National), this time around yMusic comes up to the front of the mix with the sextet’s debut album "Beautiful Mechanical" out September 27th on New Amsterdam Records. There’s a tunefulness here that I feel could only be designed by many of the pop-minded composers featured on Beautiful: Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), Son Lux and Annie Clark (St. Vincent) each contribute tunes, among others. Many of this record’s seven tracks sound like inspired throwbacks to some of my favorite early modern composers. At times I hear Stravinsky, especially in Son Lux’s contribution and album opener; the percussive, beat-driven ‘Beautiful Mechanical.’ Other songs get as thorny as Webern. ‘Daughter of the Waves’ comes to mind; penned by local composer Sarah Kirkland Snider. In particular, I was most surprised to hear so much guitar playing throughout. There’s some moments in tracks like album closer ‘Song’ that make me think I’m about to hear ‘Sour Times,’ before things dissolve again into whole tone stretches of Debussy-like wandering. No matter your familiarity with classical music, this is some absorbing stuff. "Beautiful" marks a moment when the line between the indie/alt and classical worlds is rapidly dissolving, and these are the artists building its bridge. See them debut the record live on Friday, October 14 with Shara Worden. Details to come… – Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)

Creepoid & Psychic Teens Play Host at D!D!G Sept. 6

Posted on:

RAD SHOW ALERT! Tonight Creepoid will be invading West Philly at the Danger! Danger! Gallery along with the very promising young local post-punk outfit Psychic Teens. You should be familiar with the grunge-y psychedelic folk foursome already. Some Creepoid news – there are plans in the works for them to release a split release with the band Shores via No Idea Records. (BTW: If you rock, hit up Creepoid drummer Pat Troxell about hopping on one of his Phonographic Arts showcases.) Now, Psychic Teens is a relatively new trio that seems to have also grown up on a steady diet of the dark and gloomy music that dominated my high school years. They recently won The Deli’s Featured Artist(s) Poll, and if you haven’t downloaded their FREE tracks yet HERE, then you need to right now. Both Philly crews will be hosting out of towners Vaz (who features ex-members of Hammerhead) as well as Pygmy Lush and Pygmy Shrew. Yes, two bands with the word “pygmy” in their name on the same bill – what are the odds? Or is this another indie band name trend? Well, get to D!D!G early for the locals, but stay for the imports. Danger! Danger! Gallery, 5013 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, $5 – $10 donation, All Ages – Alexis V.

NYC Artists on the Rise: The Dearloves play Glasslands on 09.06 (tonight)

Posted on:

The Dearloves have only been together for a little over a year but they seem to be getting it right. The band creates some kind of shoegazer-influenced rock and roll where songwriting and energy have priority over the genre’s proverbial wall of sound. The drums and bass are the glue to the at times furious guitars, which produce an instantly classic and somewhat epic indie rock sound. Confident male and female vocals, both full of attitude, alternate from song to song, but this doesn’t take away from the overall band sound. This is definitely a band that deserves to be checked out – you can do so on September 6 at Glasslands.- Kirsten Ferreira
