Gathering from the remote reaches of esoterica is Philadelphia’s Taiwan Housing Project, a darkwave, coldwave, no wave, don’t-call-it-a-wave wave "supergroup" consisting of members from Little Claw, Harry Pussy, Casual Viking, and Tickley Feather. The band is as much a compound of members from other bands as it is of sounds and influences. Willfully inaccessible, unapologetically harsh, Taiwan Housing Project combines the noise worship of bands of the 80’s East Village scene like DNA or Mars with the darker tonal elements of Bauhaus, conveyed with a cavernous sonic depth. What results is a delirium of murky unease, bordering on dread, and sheathed in atonal noise (see contemporary noise-rock act Dreamdecay). THP will be performing at Underground Arts tonight with a lineup of similarly rooted bands Protomartyr and Priests, who both possess noise-savvy no-wave inclinations and a brazen disregard for conventional melody.
