Brooding ‘sludge’ by local outfit Spirit Animal is equal parts deliberate diction and growling riffs. Between crashing cymbals and reverb, their brand of rock is harsh but resilient, marrying the moody thrills of grunge with the dissonant finesse of post-punk favorites like Jesus and the Mary Chain. Songs like “I’ll See You Around” are hypnotic and dark with the track’s repetitive lyricism rendering its instrumentation contemplative in its cyclical nature, mesmerizing at each note’s advance. In celebration of Spirit Animal’s debut EP Supermoon, the band is set to follow the soaring rush of Fuck Attack’s hissing riffs and buzzing screams with the gloomy shreds of newer tracks like “I Don’t Care.” Add in Philly punks Population Zero, the "good old fashioned stripped down rock and roll" of Dusty Rails, and a complimentary copy of Spirit Animal’s release (for the first 50 paid attendees), and tonight’s lineup is well worth its cost. Miss out and you’ll risk regret – not to mention massive spinnage by DJs like Ruxbin, Gab Bonghi, and Dr. Ew. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ – Dianca Potts
