R5 is hosting a very special early benefit show this afternoon at the First Unitarian Church. A portion of the ticket price will benefit the Philadelphia Free School, a democratic school run by students, staff, parents, and community members which will serve as an educational alternative to the city’s failing public school system. Also, the school will be accepting used musical instruments at the door and offering raffle prizes to raise more money. Aside from being a benefit for a great cause, the lineup features local punk legends Kid Dynamite. After Lifetime broke up, drummer Dave Wagenschutz and guitarist Dan Yemin teamed up with vocalist Jay Shevchuk to form Kid Dynamite. Over their two year existence, they released two classic albums and brought back sing-a-long choruses and a melodic edge to punk. Since the group went their separate ways in 2000, they have reunited sparingly to play various punk festivals, but tonight is their first show at the Church in years. Also on the bill are No Friends (members on Municipal Waste and New Mexican Disaster Squad) and Spraynard. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St. $15 (SOLD OUT), 5 p.m., All Ages – Dan Brightcliffe
