Kuroma releases ‘The Dark Horse Rides Again’ LP at Union Poll 10/5

Posted on:

From the sound of it, psych-pop band Kuroma’s latest release, "Perfect Girl," might have been written under the influence of a serious summer crush. Starting simply with a strumming acoustic guitar, the track slowly builds, erupting into rich layers of orchestral instrumentation – is that the sound of soaring love? Though the arrangement gets more complex as the tune progresses, "Perfect Girl" manages to remain grounded, courtesy of Hank Sullivant’s dulcet vocals hovering over the mix. The result is a tune that sounds as if it was plucked from a mid-60’s summer top 40 chart. Posted on:

A captivating intimacy silhouetted by a hypnotic surf/dream-pop groove, “Let Me Get There,” the new single from Mazzy Star singer Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, is a song whose subtle intricacies stick. The track, which also features Kurt Vile, plays off the relaxed, heart-warming vocal duet/conversation as delicate keys and the light yet firm grasp of the twisting backend meet with warm stretches of guitar, hitting against the shore. The single is featured on the forthcoming album Until the Hunter, which will be released on November 4 via Tendril Tales.

The Blind Pet’s Gruesome New Music Video for “Up All Night”

Posted on:

Austin grunge trio, The Blind Pets, have been making waves since they formed in 2007 with their fun-loving riffs and high-energy hooks. While the band’s live show has been the focal point of their reputation, their new video for “Up All Night” is shockingly disturbing and morbidly comical to the point that they may see heightened recognition for music videos going forward. Enlisting the fearless and talented, John Valley, to create the video – the result is not your typical run-of-the-mill video. Valley, who has created stellar videos for other Austin bands like Sweet Spirit and A Giant Dog, doesn’t shy away from the gaudy or grandiose when creating video. In “Up All Night” we see Valley’s dark humor manifest into a bizarre murder/sex scene a la Devils Rejects or The Hills Have Eyes. The song is 3 minutes long, while the video is 7, which means there is plenty to see. Just don’t watch it at work;)

Punk-rockers T-Rextasy to play Market Hotel 10/3

Posted on:

Fun and fearless are not a word pairing that you’d think go together, but it’s an apt description for the garage/punk rocker grrls in Brooklyn-based T-Rextasy. On their latest release, the delightfully fitting Jurassic Punk, the band uses fun vocal affectations and punk riff-age to lampoon patriarchy and systematic oppression with a forceful swagger – masterfully using absurdity to point out the absurdities that society forces women to deal with. Though T-Rextasy is endlessly engaging because of their unique approach to punk, their fiercely feminist message has us majorly crushing on the dino dames. Listen to T-Rextasy below, and be sure to check them out at the Market Hotel with Pity Sex and Eskimeaux, on 10/3. – Olivia Sisinni

A steady, guitar jangle pleasantly crisscrosses the room as the percussion aims the sound in a direction, and twang-accented vocals provide an earthy authentic texture with backing harmonies lifting the tone in a warm ascension. Entering PhilaMOCA as part of a WKDU-presented billing this evening, Point Breeze Country Club builds up steam with a loosely knit, infectious, country-barroom sway. Louie Louie dispenses memorable, quick-hitting vocals, balancing fierce yet accessible psych-garage instrumentation.
