Buzz Alert: The Royal They mix garage and indie rock vibes on self titled album

Posted on:

Brooklyn-based trio, The Royal They serve up chunky punk rhythms with some serious melody writing chops. On their latest release, a self-titled EP, indie rock vibes are paired with deceptively heavy garage rock licks. It’s control and chaos, nice and nasty. Check out the Royal They streaming below. – Olivia Sisinni

Ornaments deliver moody post-hardcore vibes to Cake Shop 10/19

Posted on:

There’s definitely a visceral gut-kick reaction when you listen to NY-based band Ornaments, but what makes the group stand out is the impassioned, poignant vibes pumping through their music. The band manages to craft aggressive soundscapes with luscious depth and delicate layering, however they cast them against an emotional rawness and stomach-wrenching hardcore vocals. The sound is something that dares you to contend with feelings you thought you forgot about. Listen to Ornaments streaming below, and catch them live at Cake Shop 10/19 with Only Sibling, Sparrows, and Safety.-Olivia Sisinni

Nicklas Hughes Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Sept. 29

Posted on:

Nicklas Hughes celebrates the release of his sophomore album, Games (due out tomorrow via Black Rd Records), with a show this evening at Boot & Saddle. Hughes enlists an emotion-exposing, singer-songwriter accessibility. However, those somber tales are hardened by the influx of multidimensional synth/pop-rock-toned instrumentation. That on-the-move feeling places the songs in the present tense as the listener lives them in the moment, while still carrying an emotive depth. Joining in on the celebration are the continuously-searching, electro-folk quartet of Upperfields and the engaging serene vocal synth combination of Natalie Wimberg and Marc Neibauer, a.k.a. My Home is the Sea. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

The Deli LA Premieres: BREATHERRR, “Plume”

Posted on:

Steady constancy is not a means of creation for Michael Anthony Espinach. The Long Beach-based multi-instrumentalist likes to find new approaches that stimulate him, different forms of expression that are starkly honesty even if they could impart some obvious discomfort. His musical project, BREATHERRR, is about taking chances with undaunted persistence – it’s meant to fit no obvious genre, a technique that wholly feeds into his unpredictable streak. What once was an industrial-inspired-project with art rock elements has now transitioned into a sound that’s more embracing but no less challenging. “Plume”, the third track off of his third full-length Almond Noir, is one of the first times where Espinach places himself front and center, a candid piece of free-flowing poetry that is exceptionally suitable for the song’s glitch and thrumming electronic elements.

Almond Noir has a set release date of November 11 on all major music platforms. You can catch him on November 3 at Prospector Long Beach. – Juan Rodríguez

Injecting vocal snippets and electronic percussion amid a new-age texture, the self-titled EP from Sinceres serves up a strange but comforting sonic stew. At first, the individual parts may not appear to mesh. Then, it clicks into place, and the image’s effervescent details come into focus.

HOODED FANG – “VENUS ON EDGE”

Posted on:

Creepy indie rock from right here in Toronto. That’s what I’m gettin’ from Hooded Fang. Their album “Venus on Earth” was released earlier this year on Daps Records. They have some very unique sounds in their music but still keep it down the indie rock alley. The vocals in “Tunnel Vision” are a bit mesmerizing especially when mixed in with the somewhat hectic instrumentation. They just finished a summer tour in support of a new album so perhaps we will give them a few days to recover. Look for upcoming Hooded Fang shows on their website. – Kris Gies

HELLO HARVARD – “SILLY THINGS” EP

Posted on:

Burlington, Ontario popsters Hello Harvard are making their way back to the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern this weekend. They released their debut EP "Silly Things" in May. The title track kicks off the album and it lays a solid foundation of what to expect. They have nice vocals with catchy hooks all over their well thought out pop-rock sound. It still kinda feels like summer and these tunes have serious summer feels. They probably have girls at their shows too. So go see em on October 1st at the ‘Shoe.

Q&A with Nervous Dater, live at Cake Shop on 10.02

Posted on:

There’s a trope about the city that it’s miserable to find love, so it makes sense that a few out-of-state-ers who wound up living in NYC would be nervous about dating. Fortunately for us, four-piece group, Nervous Dater, is anything but shy about their music abilities. The band combines a fun, driving, pop-punk aesthetic with windy, math-rock tinged guitar licks, and sets it against singer/guitarist Rachel Lightner’s clear, laid-back vocals. There’s also something delightfully relatable and real about the band’s lyricism, and their anthemic approach to songwriting gives the band an instant draw. Nervous Dater was kind enough to talk to the Deli about their origins, their latest EP, and of course, what gear they’re currently going crazy over – see links below. Nervous Dater plays the Cake Shop on October 2nd! – Olivia Sisinni

Cruel Youth unveils video for ‘Diamond Days,’ tours the US in November

Posted on:

NYC soul artist Teddy Sinclair seems to have found her voice in new project Cruel Youth, which marries her expressive and confident alto with an edgy and trippy electronic production. New single/video "Diamond Days" is a soaring ballad that manages to reference at once the Beach Boys’ orchestral Pet Sounds arrangements and the mellotron in The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever, while gradually transporting the listener towards a lofty pop chorus. Don’t miss the lady’s live show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 21, part of her upcoming US tour to promote debut album ‘+30mg.’

Kuroma releases ‘The Dark Horse Rides Again’ LP at Union Poll 10/5

Posted on:

From the sound of it, psych-pop band Kuroma’s latest release, "Perfect Girl," might have been written under the influence of a serious summer crush. Starting simply with a strumming acoustic guitar, the track slowly builds, erupting into rich layers of orchestral instrumentation – is that the sound of soaring love? Though the arrangement gets more complex as the tune progresses, "Perfect Girl" manages to remain grounded, courtesy of Hank Sullivant’s dulcet vocals hovering over the mix. The result is a tune that sounds as if it was plucked from a mid-60’s summer top 40 chart. Stream "Perfect Girl" below and catch Kuroma playing with the Acrylics at Union Pool on 10/5– Olivia Sisinni, photo by Ansely West
