Dirty Sole has released a compelling video for the first single, "Faking", from their forthcoming sophomore album FWD Motion which is due out on December 9th. NITE HØST is a dark, lo-fi sythwave band that released a Halloween-themed LP last week called Home for Hollow Daze. It is an interesting project that the band has been working on since 2015, and is so highly themed that it even comes delivered in a vile.
Ah fall. Whether it’s the poignancy of witnessing a life cycle coming to an end, or simply an evolutionary response to cooling temperatures, the autumnal season always seems to evoke appreciation for one’s cuddle buddy, or frustation at the lack of one. If you’re in the second group, have no fear: jazzy soul outfit, Vinegar Mother is ready to offer their sympathy with their new music video for the title track off their ‘Sunny Seat’ EP, due out 11/18. The song begins with fluid percussion, a chilled electric piano and Julia Zivic’s jazzy lead vocals. At first she sings in depressed sighs, but as her frustration mounts toward an un-special someone, her voice grows more tense – and her psyche more unstable. Echoing this, a horn and guitar part are added over the course of the song, giving it an agitated quality in line with the themes of bitter loss expressed in the lyrics. Score your next one with Vinegar Mother’s new track, and check them out live at The Knitting Factory on 11/8. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber
Below is a new music video for the single, "Wish We Talked Still," by Hello Shark, a.k.a. Lincoln Halloran. Directed by Free Cake For Every Creature‘s Katie Bennett, the footage was shot on Super 8 film, casting a reflective, daydream haze over the city of Philadelphia and the video’s cast of characters. The sentimental visual and audio coupling makes us long to reconnect with lost loves, though we all know that some things are best buried in the past in the back of our memories. You can find "Wish We Talked Still" on Hello Shark’s latest LP, Delicate, out now via Orindal Records. (Photo by Abi Reimold)
Though Buddahgraph Spaceship‘s sound certainly can feel astral at times, don’t be fooled–the band’s strong funk sensibility keeps them firmly planted on earth. With tasty basslines, ethereal synths, and infectious grooves, the VA-based group manages to create hip-swinging funk with a prog-y twist. Catch them live at the Velvet Lounge 11/11 with NAH. and Woodgrove, and be sure to tune them in below.-Olivia Sisinni
I dare you not to fall in love with Snail Mail. The Baltimore-based trio crafts lo-fi, indie-pop ballads that are simple, sweet, but instantly relatable and posess a depth that’s hard to not engage with. Their latest release, Habit, may have a bummer-summer vibe, but you’d be hard pressed to not be humming their tunes after listening the EP. Catch Snail Mail playing The Windup 11/8 with Tony Molina, Wildhoney and Wipeout, and in the meantime stream them below.-Olivia Sisinni
Joy Riding pay homage to a flaxen-haired, Strong Man sideline reporter in the video for “Suzie Lynn,” found on the quartet’s forthcoming album You’re So Smart. A montage of humorous (in hindsight) but intense (in the moment) competition footage filters across the screen as the power-pop ode is littered with 80’s nostalgia, including its futuristic yet simple credit sequence. The video was playfully edited by Jeffery John Massino. Joy Riding are slated to perform at Bourbon & Branch, alongside The Only Ghost in Town & Sad Juror, on November 16, and they were just added to the December 9th bill at Underground Arts with Matt Pond PA.
As the sun starts to fade into the horizon, a delicate guitar pattern still radiates in The Vernes‘ new single “Frozen Lakes”. While darkness appears imminent, those warm, yearning vocals coast along, guided by the steady pull of percussion and stabilized by joyous backing harmony. Hide behind the comforting veil of shade, and soak in those fading rays.
Listening to Pile is kind of like being in the eye of a storm–there are brief moments of calm, punctuated by the cacophony of the hurricane hurling around you. A lot of what makes the band so engaging to listen to is that while they certainly deliver the head-nod worthy riffs of an indie rock band, they’re also explosive and driving–constantly pushing the limits of simple song structures and edging toward blanketing the listener in total noise. The result is an unpredictable sonic experience with expert dynamic play, and gleaming, textbook examples of bridled chaos. If the sky ever cracks open, this may be your soundtrack to the end of the world. With the recent revival of flannel and plastic tattoo chokers, Lady Bones may be the next obsession for nostalgia-hungry millenials on the hunt for their next 90’s throwback. On the their latest EP, Terse, Lady Bones serves up everything we loved about early 90’s tunes: churning out packageable tracks with a lo-fi, DIY tinge, that still manage to seem on the brink of losing their cool. Riffs are weighty without being heavy, drumming almost feels primal at times, and the band’s vocals are unhinged, even while crafting catchy hooks.
