Weekend Warrior, November 11 – 13

Posted on:
The assemblage of Mike McGinnis, Jon DeHart, and Dan Smith, otherwise known as Fight Amp, announced a few months back that they are going on an indefinite hiatus. So tonight’s show at Kung Fu Necktie may represent the trio’s final Philly performance. One thing is certain; the band will be bringing their focused brand of heaviness – the type that oozes with deep, churning, rhythmic discontent. That purposeful, pulsating, noisy instrumentation quakes, teaming with an ominous vocal snarl that brews a strong batch of sludge-rock. The unfiltered, raucous rattling of post-hardcore quartet Legendary Divorce ushers in an air of intensity to open the proceedings. Fellow Reptilian Records brethren and Baltimore-based noise-rock trio Multicult bridge the gap. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7pm, $10, 21+ (Photo by Steve Perrong) – Michael Colavita

Carroll LP Release Show at The Barbary Nov. 11

Posted on:

Psych-pop quartet Carroll impresses with the release of their sophomore record, As Far As Gardens Grow. The LP reveals serenading vocals, pristine keys, rhythmically vibrant guitars and bass lines, and whimsically-crafted songwriting from the Minneapolis transplants. The album was mixed by Jon Lo (The National, Sharon Van Etten), who was the inspiration behind their relocation, and it is now available via Shattered Orb Records. Carroll will be celebrating its arrival this evening at their Weathervane Music-presented album release party at The Barbary. They’ll also be joined by Brooklyn-based garage-pop trio THICK and Petunia, the solo project from local singer-songwriter John Ryan. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 7pm, $7-$10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Personal Space bring their quirky pop to Sunnyvale on 11.18

Posted on:

Mr. Stephen Malkmus must have found a way to mutate the DNA of the white musician specie, considering how influential the Pavement records are in this day and age. Brooklyn quartet Personal Space develops  in intriguing ways a sound reminiscent of that band’s more mature, later records, marrying them with mathy tempos and breaks, and a touch of emo. We are enjoying single ‘Offering,’ (streaming) which showcases sophisticated songwriting and production, and a slightly more "psych" approach than the rest of the album, in particular in the liberatingly noisy finale. You can see Personal Space at Sunnyvale on November 18.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

NYC DJ on the rise: Kerri Chandler

Posted on:

Continuing on in the psychedelic milieu, native Kerry Chandler‘s strange, compelling work mixes ’80s acid house and deep-house, with exotic percussion. At his live performances, expect his usual spate of sound effects too—people talking, cars honking, general tones of urban life—which is known reduce the species to a wonderland of microcosms. – Brian Chidester

Gale Forces play Molly Malone’s on 11/12

Posted on:

Gale Forces, the nom de plume of Jade Devitt, takes the essential core of early nineties hard rock and revives it with flashes of melodic flair. Devitt keeps things simple, though he also adds a crafty playfulness with big, crunch melodies that suggest there’s a certain whimsy to his delivery. He’s not really emulating the mannered miserablism of that era’s period, a formula that worked for Dave Grohl and could very well work for him as he expands his songwriting ambitions, too.

Devitt will be performing songs off of his self-titled EP with his full band at Molly Malone’s on November 12.

Let the buzzing powerpop of Brain Grease pound on your eardrum with Gnarly Death Hammer! The weed-lovin’ trio’s debut EP might just be a temporary cure for your post-election blues (like that hit and/or drink you just took). Clocking in at under eight minutes, the relief may be brief, but you can always just press play again. (Or it might be time to hit the harder stuff.)

Queen Jesus Record Release Show at The Storefront Nov. 10

Posted on:

The quintet of Queen Jesus celebrates their sophomore release, Tar Ranch, this evening at the Storefront. Step into the subdued, slow-burning songs nestled in a semi-psych-folk cabin. Slide guitar wafts over the cozy compact backend groove, and the heady conscious reflections of vocals that stickily expand in harmony. Maintaining that seductive somber state, the duo of Zack Robbins (Superheaven) & Josh Mackie (Idiot Forever), a.k.a. DARK MTNS, bathe in brisk but refreshing waters. Nina Ryser (of Palberta) shifts the perspective with the quirky, looming twists of a dream in discovery, and steaming from strength, the momentous songs of Madalean Gauze complete this billing. The Storefront, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Ready to embrace punk’s nihilism? Surfbort plays Bowery tomorrow (11.11)

Posted on:

In this new version of America we’ve all woken up to, you don’t need a genius to predict a punk resurgence in the upcoming years, in its most nihilistic forms and shapes. Brooklyn’s Surfbort, then, don’t need to go anywhere sound-wise, since that’s exactly what they’ve been playing since their 2015 debut single ‘Trash.’ The notes from their following, self titled EP (released in January) prophetically read: "this is a record that laughs in the face of the end of the world." Since their appearance on the scene, the young rebels have been filling up most of the small to medium size venues in NYC, while never missing the opportunity to roll over their filthy stages – an essential trait of any true punk musician. Tomorrow (November 11) they’ll have a lot of room for that trick, since they’ll playing at the Bowery Ballrom for the second time this year, opening for Thee Oh Sees. For those frustrated by the election results, it may be a good opportunity to let out some steam…
