Computer Magic unveils video for ‘Dimensions’ + talks about gear with Delicious Audio

Danz Johnson, aka Computer Magic, is by no means a tyro when it comes to navigating the music scene. In just 6 years, the Brooklyn-based synth-pop artist amassed 10+ releases, became something of a sensation in Japan, and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Her latest EP, Obscure But Visible, smacks of  a more mature artist capable of fulling flexing her songwriting abilities, but has the same fresh feel and innovative vibes that her fans have come to love her for. Recently, the artist unveiled a new video for single ‘Dimensions’ (streaming below), agreed to give us a glimpse into the magic that happens behind her computer and talk about her songwriting processes and experiences performing. – Olivia Sisinni

Willie Green releases LP ‘Doc Savage’ – a Hip Hop epic

Nicholas Nicholas unveils video for ‘Medallion’

If you know what 4AD and Tindersticks are (hint: the latter is a UK band that should have been on the former, a record label that put out a lot of wonderfully dark and dreamy records in the ’80s), in all likelyhood you’ll enjoy Brooklyn Nicholas Nicholas‘ shy, ghostly tracks. With a sound as introverted as it gets, this band creates sonic soundscapes trapped between a bedroom with a sound and a wandering mind – giving the impression that their songs are private notes we were not really supposed to see or hear. The band released LP ‘About Town’ in November, check out singles ‘Texas Architecture’ and the video for Medallion, below.

Tender Loving Winter Times

Comparatively speaking in regards to the rest of the west coast, it’s cold as shit outside. Since most of us have been schlepping around our respective abodes in snow day sweatpants attire, it’s time to put on our finest doodads for a night that’s sure to be less dramatic than the ones back in grade school. Say hello to yet another year of Tender Loving Empire’s Winter Formal.

TLE doesn’t disappoint, and this year’s lineup continues in their good holiday faith. Rap Class will be up first, setting a lasting ambiance with his moody yet movement-inducing electronic sounds. With the voice of a soulful angel and enough rhythm to make anyone scream "okurrr!," Maarquii will be giving everyone some much needed life before that cumbia kicks in and gets everyone all sweaty, thanks to Orquestra Pacifico Tropical.

We’re all in need of dancing away this shitty year and TLE’s Winter Formal allows us to do so while still spreading some Christmas spirit. The dance is a toy drive for the Portland Fire & Rescue Toy & Joy Makers, so come out this Saturday with $10 and a toy (or $20 and no toy, as half of that will serve as donation). Come dressed at least mildly to impress, hit up the onsite photobooth and turn up for the season!

A band to check out: Language plays Pine Box and Alphaville on December 17-22

If you have ever wandered how The Feelies would have sounded if they played their instruments like Fugazi (you obviously haven’t, have you?) you’ll find the answer in ‘Pre-Campaign,’ a pretty darn tense post punk gem by Brooklyn’s Language. The track opens their latest EP ‘Junket,‘ which proceeds along post-punk/post-hardcore coordinates, showcasing an invetive attitude sprinkled with math tendencies. Check out second track ‘Lex’ below, and – if you are in the mood for some sublime, loud noise, don’t miss them live at either Pine Box Rock Shop on December 17th or at Alphaville on the 22nd.

To honor the arrival of their double LP Rude Boys Of Bar Rock (Lame-O Records), Steady Hands, who is fronted by Modern Baseball drummer Sean Huber, just shared a new music video for album opener "Under The Rug". Directed by Emily Dubin, the camera focuses on the adorable "#1 daug," Bruce, enjoying a lazy afternoon with his favorite toy and a vinyl copy of the group’s new record. Square Peg Round Hole EP Release Show at Crane Arts Dec. 15

Crane Arts presents a rare opportunity this evening in the Icebox, as the experimental trio of Square Peg Round Hole, accompanied by a horn section as well as Josh Miller for a commemorative (one-time only) performance, brings their new ambient-oriented EP Five Years (Spartan Records) to life. The album, in and of itself, shifts gears, traveling through delicate, contemplative clouds in lieu of their characteristic, percussive style. Not only that, the EP will be paired/packaged with a limited edition original art print from the band’s own Carlos Pecheco-Perez. The transfixing electro-noise collective of Triangulus ushers in a sonic session that extends the spectrum. Crane Arts, 1400 N. New Music Video: “Wishful Thinking” – Clique

The video for Clique’s “Wishful Thinking” finds the quartet stepping outdoors, however, remaining in the comfortable seclusion of their living room setting. Directed by the band’s own Travis Arterburn, the footage also features Shannen Moser, whom provided backing vocals on the track, found on Burden Piece, which is available via Topshelf Records. You can also find Clique indoors (thankfully) tonight at Everybody Hits with Ursula, Stove, and Sun Young.

The FORZ Bring Infectious Power-Pop to Sally O’Brien’s 12/31

Listening to The FORZ’s sophomore album Running From The Past, it’s hard not to see the irony in the title.  The brain child of songwriting duo Cole Tyler and Anthony Graziano, the Boston power pop quartet has embraced a wonderfully Beatles-esque/surf rock dynamic, bringing a modern energy to a tried and true formula of quality songwriting and simple, catchy melodies.  All four members share the title of lead singer, adding an extra layer of variety in their vocal stylings.  If you’re in the mood for some high-energy nostalgia, help Boston’s fab four ring in the New Year at Sally O’Brien’s on 12/31. -Brian Varneke

Tonight, we hope you’ll make your way to the Fox Theater in Oakland to support Oakland United: A Benefit for Oakland Fire Relief.

Oakland United is a A Night of Music and Stories featuring Christopher Willits, Dan Deacon, Gabe Meline (KQED), Fantastic Negrito, Geographer, Hieroglyphics, Jay Som, Josette Melchor (Gray Area), Kennedy Ashlyn and Anya Taylor (Them Are Us Too), Primus, Rogue Wave, Sam Lefebvre (East Bay Express), Sidecar Tommy (Beats Antique), The Coup, Thao Nguyen, tUnE-yArDs, Tycho and many more!

Hosted by Josette Melchor of the Gray Area Foundation For The Arts, which started a fund shortly after the tragedy and has collected over $500,000 to date. The fund is collaborating closely with the Oakland Mayor’s Office and the Red Cross as well as getting guidance from local arts institutions. The immediate needs of fire victims will be the fund’s priority with the Red Cross as the first point of contact for allocation of the funds received from the Oakland Sports Teams funds.
