Mary Lattimore tweeted yesterday, "Made a new kinda corny song today, very rough draft, very imperfect but from the heart. I’ll prob hate it tomorrow!" Whether this is a demo or something that Lattimore becomes more comfortable with today as the final result, "Do Worry," which sounds like an ominous warning in this current, turbulent social/political climate, is juxtaposed by the serene composition that actually instills feelings of hope towards its conclusion. Or maybe that’s just how we’re interpreting it because we could use a bit of hope these days. Whatever it may be, it certainly doesn’t sound corny to us. Mary Lattimore will be performing next in Philly on Tuesday, January 31 at Union Transfer supporting Parquet Courts.
CE, Krychek, and Kala & the Lost Tribe to play National Sawdust’s “THE REVOLUTION VOL. 11” on 1/21
Now in its 11th edition, "THE REVOLUTION" concert series at National Sawdust has consistently held it down by featuring talent both top-notch and under the national radar, but always local. Which is the reason why this ver blog decided to partner with them! This month’s cream of the crop features CE of Quincy Vidal spitting and singing his solo stuff, Krychek’s bizzare electropop and the loungy hip-hop of Kala and the Lost Tribe.
CE (pronounced "See," pictured) is 1/2 of NY indie-rap stalwart Quincy Vidal, also an established emcee/producer. His solo recordings feature sedated instrumentals and potent lyrics that are mostly rapped but often sung as well. Krychek, the only non hip hop artist on the bill, will break the funky grooves with music that sounds like a surprisingly functional marriage between Nine Inche Nails and Tears for Fears. Their punky, spacy electropop is at times unstable, at others tranquil but always transfixing. Kala and The Lost Tribe serve the classic, never cliché, combo of poignant, clever rapping over jazzy, keys-driven backing tracks. Check out their recent single/video ‘Chill" streaming below.

New Track: “All In” (Feat. Cynthia G. Mason) – Sun Airway
Before 2016 ended, we were delighted by the news of Sun Airway‘s return after a four-year hiatus with his single "FOAM". And now, just barely into 2017, we are treated once again to the second sampling from his forthcoming LP, Heraldic Black Cherry, called "All In". The vibrant calm of Sun Airway’s latest track also features backing vocals by Philly singer-songwriter Cynthia G. Mason.
Indie “Space-Folk” Trio Ian Cat & The Crimsons Play The Plough and Stars 1/12
At times experimental and psychedelic, while at others upbeat and driving, Ian Cat‘s new album East Coast New England Boy, is truly a journey that must be experienced in its entirety. At its core, the album is a singer/songwriter showcase, exhibiting Cat’s lyrical prowess, ranging from somber to exaltant. However, he doesn’t stop there, adding shoegaze-y guitar tones and appropriately sporadic percussion to form an impressive soundscape. Check out Ian Cat & The Crimsons at The Plough and Stars with The Rupert Selection on 1/12. –Brian Varneke
Peace Out to Pony Village
For damn near a decade, Pony Village have become one of the more household names in Portland, despite being named after a mall in North Bend. Lead singer and guitarist Ryan Barber has transposed his memories of growing up in the coastal southern Oregon town into the indie pop songwriting that’s gained Pony Village such a cult following. Sadly, fans won’t be getting much more from the band since tonight, Pony Village is being laid to rest.
Exactly why their Rontoms Sunday Sessions set tonight will be their last performance ever, we’re not sure. We were always able to count on Pony Village, no matter how many lineup changes or other random occurrences popped up. Needless to say, whether they play more shows, make more albums or not, they’ll always be a Portland favorite.
Weather permitting, you can catch Pony Village’s last show later this evening at Rontoms with Ali Muhareb. As always with their Sunday Sessions events, it’s free.
WAVE OF TERROR – “LOVE TO GROW” SINGLE
Wave of Terror are a garage rock group from right here in Toronto. They have released a single "Love to Grow" on Badgerow Records. This tune takes all the best things about the current lo-fi scene and brings it all to life in one convenient package. Pure garage with some psych and surf elements all rolled into one beautifully fuzzy track. All we can do now is patiently wait for more releases. I see this band having a very nice 2017. – Kris Gies

NYC ’90s alt rock semi-legends Supertouch return at St.Vitus on 01.19
Ah, the late 90’s. What a decade to be alive for true rock lurvers! A time filled with gritty, grungy, hardcore, sloppy yet wonderful alternative rock music. Formed in 1987, hardcore influenced NYC band Supertouch release three years later their debut album “The Earth is Flat”. Their musical style hinted at legends such as Mudhoney, Melvins, and Bad Brains, but with their own sonic spin and a F-You demeanor retained from the good old punk days. As it happens in rock’n’roll, they broke up after that debut, which slowly became a cult record among many rock music connoisseurs. Twenty years later, the band is reuniting, releasing a new EP entitled “Lost My Way,” which really sounded as if time had stopped. Although they haven’t released new music since “Lost My Way”, Supertouch is still killing it live, and will hit St. Vitus on January 19th. Check out their EP title-track streaming below. – Jocelyn Huggler
