Stream Astro Tan’s ‘Canary,’ Out Today

Posted on:

Dual guitars, primo percussion and an interesting blend of jazz, psych, r&b and indie rock have propelled local trio Astro Tan into the hearts of music lovers around town for the last couple years now. A few EPs here, a couple free released singles there, Astro Tan haven’t given us a full length’s worth of the trippy soul we’ve all been waiting for, until now.

Canary, out today, pulls a few previously released tracks and throws them in with some newer ones like "The Jetsons," a wispily melodic tune relating modern life and love to the animated quips of the old school futuristic cartoon of the same name. It shows Astro Tan taking what they do best to the next level.

Stream Canary below and be sure to check out Astro Tan’s album release show on the 28th at the Doug Fir with Tango Alpha Tango and Taylor Kingman before they head on tour in mid-March.

Weekend Warrior, February 24 – 26

The weather’s unseasonably warm temperatures may push one out the door in search of good musical times. Luckily the docket is full of excellent opportunities. Among the plethora of performances on the slate, First Unitarian Church plays host to a pair. Proceeds from tonight’s Indie Pop Prom will go the Pink Fund. As for the billing, the incisive, empowering songwriting of Sad13, a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis (of Speedy Ortiz), keeps things real, delivering in a contagious, free-flowing, instrumental platform. Similarly, Sports navigate personal depths through an avalanche of momentous pop rock. The blooming, experimental jangle of Mercury Girls and the nostalgic, melodic pop-punk of Swanning shape a stellar evening, which also includes headliners, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Meanwhile, Saturday’s 10th annual Two Piece Fest will be offering an all-day affair, exploring the full spectrum of dynamics among duos. You can view the full list of performers for the festival HERE.

Creeping into one’s foggy, THC-filled mind, the cosmic conquests of folk-psych outfit Shadow Band celebrate their freshly landed album, Wilderness Of Love (Mexican Summer), with a release show this Saturday at Baird Mansion Atrium. Likewise, the trio of No Thank You sets sail with their new album, Jump Ship (Lame-O Records), with a show tonight at Everybody Hits. The album exhibits an impassioned, emotive exploration with a cathartic air that makes one stay onboard. – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Running Hot” – Littler

Posted on:

Bi-coastal rockers Littler announced that they would be going on hiatus this past summer, but that doesn’t seem to have lasted very long. The band just announced that it will be releasing a four-song EP, titled Bad Hand, on April 28 via Yellow K Records/Disposable America. It was recorded and mixed by Kyle Gilbride (of Wherever Audio). The goup already shared its lead single, "Oversteeped," which was also accompanied by a music video, and now, we have another new single for your listening pleasure called "Running Hot". New Track: “Anxiety Blues” – Kate Dressed Up

Posted on:

Katie Miller, a.k.a. Kate Dressed Up, dishes on her personal demons with “Anxiety Blues”. Found on her new EP Destinations, the song, adorned in a traditional country/blues arrangement, deals with the perplexing personal problems that can consume one’s mind regularly, especially during these head-scratching times. Sometimes, it just feels easier to over think than to move forward.

New Furniteur single “Swimming” shows DC can synthwave too

Posted on:

The cover art has vaporwave aesthetics and the music is full of 80s timbres and nearly incomprehensible vocals; Furniteur’s new single “Swimming” is synthwave coming straight outta DC. The airy sounds and reverb soaked electronic drum hits recall the classic 80s dystopian pop sounds of artists like Depeche Mode and Gary Numan, but do so with a decidedly modern take on the vocal melodies. It’s good to see DC getting in on this national trend.

Here’s Furniteur’s “Swimming”, recorded in Petworth.

Visual Vices: Strangeletter – “Transporter”

Posted on:

Those screen savers on the old Microsoft Windows systems used to be the best. So many options to get visually lost in as a child, a stoner or in some people’s cases, both, those screensavers were one of the best things about zoning out and ignoring the "wah wah wahs" of your parents.

"Transporter," the newest animated video from Strangeletter, the dark alt-rock project from Steven James Bayless, is reminiscent of those zoned out times. While flying under the local radar, Strangeletter has been ascending in success in so many other ways, with his music having been featured in the TV show Firefly, in trailers for PlayStation’s inFamous 2 and more.

Spark up, turn the lights out and get caught up in Strangeletter’s "Transporter" video below. It’s perfect for this drizzly night.

Portland’s Best in Psych and Shoegaze: Zozma and Cat Hoch

Posted on:

Our more trippy genre poll, psych and shoegaze, ran gazed out slow fuzz with the strange visuals psychedelia forces your mind to make. The two winners all of you felt rocked 2016 honestly come as no surprise, since they’ve been packing venues and mesmerized crowds all throughout the last year. Big congratulations go out to Zozma and Cat Hoch! Both of these names are of course familiar in the Deli Portland world, because our Deli readers have brought them to the top before.

We’ve thought of Zozma as one of the best psych acts in Portland for awhile now. All of you voted them as our Artist of the Month back in September of last year, so seeing them as the winner of our readers’ poll solidifies their stance as the rulers of our spiritual psych world.

This also isn’t the first Deli success Cat Hoch and her band have seen with the Deli either. She came out on top entirely in 2015, when she was voted the Best Emerging Artist of that year. From opening up for Ride to commanding even bigger stages, Cat Hoch and her talented group of musicians aren’t stopping anytime soon.

Katie Jones of National Sawdust presents VOL. 12 of The Revolution on 2/25

Posted on:

Brooklyn-based venue, The National Sawdust, was formed with the mission of bringing dynamic, artist-led musical experiences to the performance space and The Revolution series is a prime example. This musical movement–the twelfth in the series–aims to highlight artists that are bringing innovation and advancements to their genres. This Saturday’s show will feature an eclectic array of talent with slacker rockers Rachel Angel, electro-R&B group Eda Wolf, and the jazz/funk/neo-soul quintet Nuf Said gracing the bill. The show is a sure-fire ticket to a killer set of performances, so be sure check out more info on The Revolution Vol. 12 here.-Olivia Sisinni

Ahsh Eff crafts mutli-layered throwback hip hop with new single “Kozart”

Posted on:

Ahsh Eff’s growly drawl is 2017’s greatest throwback.

When Ahsh starts rapping it’s easy to get lost in her posturing. Lines like “Glowed up, feeling like I’m Sosa,” come off as clever plays on Hip Hop cliches. It’s not until you realize that Ahsh is actually a character created by the artist (actually named Lisa) that you get really dialed into the brilliance of the performance.  It’s meta-rap replete with money green hair and eyebrows.  She’s playing the role of a fifteen year old girl who is completely enraptured with the swagger of gangbanging staring at posters on her wall, emphatically chanting “GANG! GANG! GANG!”  Ahsh Eff is one to watch this year as she continues to deconstruct her thug.brokeMC

Todavía releases dreamy new single “Our Luck”

Posted on:

Todavía take you on a romantic, though potentially tragic, excursion with "Our Luck". The project of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Rhyan Riesgo, the track provides a dark shading of heavily textured and lustruous sounds as she succumbs deeper and deeper into a toxic spell. Its’ surging guitars and seraphic tones are really something for the ears to behold, considerig Riesgo came up with this all on her own.

"Our Luck" is currently streaming on all major platforms. Listen to the track below.

The Deli’s Best Emerging Philly Psych Pop/Rock Artist: The Dove & The Wolf!

Posted on:

After compiling the jurors’, readers’/fans’ and writers’ votes for The Deli Philly’s Best Emerging Psych Pop/Rock artists, congrats to The Dove & The Wolf! Paloma Gil and Louise Hayat-Camard had already started making a name for themselves under the moniker with the release of their debut self-titled EP and and tours with Rachael Yamagata and Butch Walker. After a transformative experience, while being in Paris during the Bataclan terrorist attack, the ladies were eventually able to renew their visas and return home to Philly. Inspired by their experiences during those troubling times, the duo eventually teamed up with Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs) and Nick Krill (The Spinto Band) to record the moving I Don’t Know What To Feel. And what was originally self-released as a five-song EP has now expanded to seven, and will be reissued on March 24 via Fat Possum so this victory looks to be just the start of what should be another memorable year for The Dove & The Wolf – hopefully in a much better way.

Runner-up Japanese Breakfast and honorable mention recipients Carroll are also worthy of your adoration, but also check out the rest of our talented nominees that made this year’s list! (Photo by Sidney Bensimon)

New Video: Audiotree Live Session – Mannequin Pussy

Posted on:

Mannequin Pussy stopped by Audiotree Live on February 3, 2017 to unleashed their blissful, brutal blend of punk. Showcasing a solid sampling from their latest album, Romantic (Tiny Engines), The Deli Philly’s November 2016 Record of the Month, the quartet demonstrates a fierce intensity, while wielding a melodic precision. The group also took a moment to discuss some of their favorite local music, inspirations, collaborations, etc. Mannequin Pussy will be performing at Johnny Brenda’s tomorrow night, as part of The Trevor Project Benefit, where they’ll be joined by Abi Reimold, King Azaz, and Carcara.
