Kicking off with just a couple of stick clicks, Grim Streakers’ debut track, “Guts,” errupts in a rush of noise and punk-rock bravado. The Brooklyn-based band thrusts the listen into an engulfing wall of sound that’s at once thick, trashy and catchy. The release is a spitfire of a track that does it all while just clocking above the 2-minute mark, and if it’s a sign of what’s to come, then we’re expecting big things out of the group. What begin as a calming, airy synth while sprawled out on a couch quickly transforms into a heart–pounding, night-crawling endeavor in the new video for Pretty Digital‘s "Get Used to It". Directed by Jay Yachetta, the footage captures the high-speed, bright lights, bass-bumping, electro intensity that the song induces. However, the twist of Nala the dog occupying the driver’s seat, when the text conversation suggests that Justin Weismiller is walking him, provides an ironic conclusion.
While there are a few bands operating under the Dirty Blondes monkier populating various reaches of the internet, the Brooklyn-based fourpiece is the only group that really lives up to the name–laying down growling, blitzed out garage-psych jams that could have easily just rolled out of bed. The band busts out tracks with jangly guitars, lax vocals, and the dynamic deftness of the Pixies, but the delicious layer of lo-fi fuzz is what will really leave you feeling dirty.Catch Dirty Blondes live at Cape House tonight (3/22) alongside Surf Rock is Dead, Better Head, and DA POP, but in the meantime, you can get your fix by streaming them below. – Olivia Sisinni
On March 6, 2017, Kississippi visited the Audiotree Live studio to record a session that was just released. Amid playing a set featuring a solid sampling of songs from We Have No Future, We’re All Doomed, the band discusses a variety of topics including Brandon Flowers, what’s in their current music rotation, and influential music from their youth. On the influential front, they also delve into their relationship with Slingshot Dakota and how they’re recent tour together was impacted by a hurricane. Kississippi will be performing a solo set at Trash House on Friday, April 7 with Prince Daddy & The Hyena, Dollar Signs, and Teenage Halloween.
Daddy Issues is back with a bang, releasing a fiery single, “In Your Head,” from their upcoming album, Deep Dream. The tune chronicles the mess of emotion left behind after a breakup, marrying rage and melancholy in a way that brings 90s alt rock and grunge classics like Bikini Kill or Nirvana to mind. Sonically, this is the heaviest work the trio has ever made. The guitar tone is full bodied, with enough fuzz to make the highs crackle while the bass thunderously fills in the low end. The production is high quality, moving in the opposite direction of their previously lo-fi/diy style and bringing new clarity to the fuzzy, grunge revival they execute so well. This is, without a doubt, the Nashville alt rock band to watch in 2017.
We have finally reached the end of the road for The Deli’s Best Emerging New England Artists Poll. As usual, it’s been a lengthy, exhausting, painstaking journey through an abundance of numbers, band names, and some seriously rad tunes. Now, before we get to our list of this year’s Top Performers, we would like to thank our wonderful, knowledgeable jury of local music experts/enthusiasts (which you can view below), dedicated Deli writers and all those who took the time to check out our nominees and cast their votes. You’re the best, and we wouldn’t be able to do this without you!
1. Crumb is an outfit that takes the pleasantly dissonant atmosphere of smooth jazz and molds it into psych rock masterpieces. Their songs glide along steady pace, revealing highly skilled instrumentation without abandoning the groove. There are long stretches of jam that prove remiscent of classic indie rockers like Lotus Plaza, but there are moments of unbridled wierdness and pure chaos, sprinkled in to add some spice to the psychedelic sonic brew. Crumb is the new must listen for psych fans in New England.

2. XR Tabs is a band to which it’s nearly impossible to assign a definitive genre. Their work contains elements of experimental noise rock, post-punk, indie rock, and electronica. They traverse unclaimed musical territory almost as a rule, making listening a wholly unexpected experience.

3. Pompo is an alt rock band that blends elements of funk and blues to create a hybrid, modern alternative rock sound. With lengthy, funk jams that serve as an instant reminder of early Red Hot Chili Peppers, they’ve honed a classic sound and made it their own.
Copper Crown are bringing a unique alt-punk-ska sound to the Toronto scene. They released their debut self titled EP last year. All of the band members come from different music backgrounds with several influences so it’s hard and frowned upon to label Copper Crown under one genre. Basically the band sounds like classic California ska bands of the 90’s with Dido on vocals. They will be playing at Bovine Fest #2 at Bovine Sex Club on March 26th. – Kris Gies
Most people (not just musicians) come to the Big Apple full of dreams, to leave it within a few years, when its frantic pace, crazy costs, and tight spaces have become unbearable. Pharmakon, the experimental, insane sounding industrial project of producer Margaret Chardiet, is the product of a human being who’s never given up to NYC: that’s where she was born and raised, currently calling Far Rockaway, Queens, home. Listening to her new track "Transmission" (streaming), from upcoming new album "Contact," make us wonder whether the track’s sound represents the sublimination of a psyche brought to the edge of insanity by a city that notoriously provides shrinks with lots of work. Is this what people escape from, when they leave NYC? Is Transmission the big apple’s own sonic version of Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream? We’ll have a chance to experience, and exorcize, its primal desperation live, at Brooklyn Bazaar, on April 14th.

San Francisco Bay Area-based six-piece The Seshen release the second single, Colors Collide, from their recent album ‘Flames & Figures’ on 10th March via Tru Thoughts. Just in time for their ‘Flames & Figures’ Europe Tour (please see overleaf for dates), The Seshen’s new single relays the intrapersonal journey of “Colors Collide”, and a reimagined remix from LA duo Starkiller (the production outfit of C.E. Garcia & Alfredo E. Fratti, members of Adrian Younge’s Venice Dawn).
The Spirit of the Beehive just premiered its long-awaited LP Pleasure Suck, which officially comes on March 24 via Tiny Engines, but you can stream it now over at Stereogum. The album shifts unpredictably from warm melodies to wafting, textured soundscapes that morph into chaotic, dense walls of noise, and back again without notice, as a dreary, dark cloud hangs over the disenchanted, dual guy-gal lead vocals. It’s a mind-warping collection of tracks that yearn for you to dig deeper. The band is currently on an extensive U.S. tour that will wrap up with a hometown release show on Friday, March 28 at Everybody Hits.
We’ve been asking for new music from shoegazy neo-psych post-punk outfit Daydream Machine for a little while now and after being teased with "Modern Prophecy" back in January, The Show Must Not Go On is finally here.
It technically dropped earlier this month with a video for the album’s first track "You Know Who" to go along with it, and a listening party running through the album a few days ago on St. Patrick’s Day. Tonight is when the big celebration takes place, since it’s the album release show along with the kickoff of their tour with Souvenir Driver.
Daydream Machine aren’t the only ones with new tunes, since Souvenir Driver have been hard working in the studio as well. They debuted their new emotive dream pop track "Dive" earlier in March, the first single shared from their upcoming self-titled fourth release, due out April 14. Catch more peeks into what the LP will sound like tonight at the tour kickoff, or at any of their stops while on the road.
