Wearing a creepy mask while strolling through the streets, the new video for Haunted Homes‘ "CoastGhost2Coast" leaves one in an uneasy state. Directed by Bob Sweeney, the song’s ominous vibe is captured with its dim, black & white aesthetic. Then, as if a spell had been cast, those dressed in ghostly apparel lurk into the night to see over their surroundings. You can catch the band in the flesh on Thursday, April 13 at Johnny Brenda’s with Sallie Ford and Molly Burch. (Photo by Bob Sweeney)
COTE releases haunting single “Cruel,” plays Alphaville on 05.11
COTE’s new single ‘Cruel’ is a soft, dreamy respite from a stormy, chaotic world. Gentle pedal steel fills space in the verses, creating soft sonic clouds while bold, distorted electric guitar riffs blast through them on the choruses. The instrumentation almost sounds like a more meandering, country-oriented War on Drugs. Her vocal timbre is somehow simultaneously haunting and soothing, offering gentle, measured observation, and raw unbridled emotion when it soars at the song’s climax. COTE played her first live performance (with band) at the Mercury Lounge on March 29th, but you’ll be able to see her again live at Alphaville on May 11th. – Andrew Strader, Photo Credit: Jen Trahan
New Track: “Tongues” – Slomo Sapiens
Half of Slomo Sapiens‘ recent EP Fishtown Tapes, “Tongues,” sets out on a mysterious journey. Paced by the snap and thump backend, the trio ventures off into the night. Gradually, the murkiness comes to a head as the guitar weaves a shadowy path. Then, the band unites in a complementing instrumental thunderclap. Digging a significant groove, Slomo Sapiens push the tempo, unleashing a can of whoopass.
New Ecstatic Vision Album Available for Streaming
Raw Rock Fury, the new album from psych-rockers Ecstatic Vision, will be released via Relapse Records on April 7; however, the wait is over because the album is currently streaming over at Noisey. The band unleashes their unrelenting charge of backend rhythm, sorcerer-style, guttural vocals, projected from the mountaintop or down in the dungeon with blistering blasts of saxophone and stealthy floating flutes. The concoction pulls listeners into an intoxicating brand of heavy, one which soars toward the cosmos, simultaneously exorcising demons. Ecstatic Vision is scheduled to perform on Saturday, April 15 at the First Unitarian Church on a bill that also includes EyeHateGod, Rosetta, and Moros.
A Deer A Horse to bring blistering noise-y sludge rock to St. Vitus 5/1
A Deer A Horse has a penchant for tearing through the tidy lines separating genres with reckless abandon, and on their latest EP release, Backswimmer, the Brooklyn-based threepiece fuses together styles and feels with the might of an atom smasher. Sludgy, doom metal riffs, meet angular, dissonant melody lines, and are paired with deep, bewitching female-led vocals, that are set against a rotation of primative tom-toms, and indie-rock beats. Take all of this and consider that–somehow–the band manages to showcase strong hook-writing chops and pop sensibility. A Deer A Horse is schizo-rock at its absolute finest and their EP is an aggresive, blistering mind-meld that we can’t get enough of. Check out the band’s title track streaming below, and see them live at St. Vitus 5/1 alongside Dad, Darkwing, My Heart and the Real World, and Samantha Noise. – Olivia Sisinni
Goon explores dark territory with new track “Cammie at Night”
Setting the scene through a slow and longing lull of cloudy chords, Goon builds upon this somber tone into a sensory soundscape with their latest track, “Cammie at Night.” The track’s alternate grunge appeal takes center stage, alongside crunchy distortions and lo-fi vocals processed through a misty sense of view. Despite the track’s initial slow start, scuzzy guitar lines explode midway into an effortless sonic wave.
With a heavy dosage of emotions weighing musically, front man Kenny Becker explains that the track “explores the sensitive subject of sexuality repressed by religion and the lingering affect it has on adolescents and their sexual relationships and developing sexual identity.” Becker successfully translates the track’s purpose by holding the alternative rock flare with a skilled balanced. “Cammie at Night” may carry a heavy demeanor at times, but is brought into a fresh light with its lightweight trance, hidden among the driving bass lines.

The Northeastern Railroads Releases Debut Album, Plays Out of the Blue Gallery 4/22
The Northeastern Railroads, brain-child of Boston’s Tony Moureilles, is a full-bodied wall of sound, nuanced and expressive. A pleasant mix of indie-rock and shoegaze flavors, Tony’s debut record, Hope, is a dynamic study of unconventional songwriting, keeping an experimental flair (at times, somewhat Bowie-esque) without sacrificing the integrity of the song. Check him out at his album release party, 4/22 at Out of the Blue Gallery. –Brian Varneke
watergh0st brings goth glo-fi to Brooklyn Bazaar on April 9th
The music of watergh0st (a.k.a. Rachel Roth) sounds much different live and unleashed than it does when contained in any physical or digital medium. As you might realize on April 9th at Brooklyn Bazaar, her songs contain an energy both rebellious and compassionate. The spectral sound of watergh0st’s material stretches up into the heavens and digs deep into the grit of the earth, which makes the exact genre hard to identify. You might find similarities to Crystal Castles, as her rich and moving voice soars over mysterious looping sound waves layered with bells, echoing industrial percussion, and guitars. You’ll find these layers prevalent — especially in the vocals — on her latest release, "Take The Time You Need". We are streaming below her newest release, the haunting "dusk".
At the April 9th Brooklyn Bazaar show, watergh0st will perform with prog-metal philosophers TVRKMENISTAN, "mad-sad" post-rock outfit Tiny Gun, groove metal alchemists KTHRTK, and the once-and-forever experimental math pop wizards NO SHOES. All NO SHOES fans weep, for this is their final show. – Will Sisskind
Grace Sings Sludge Shares New Video – A Man Doesn’t Want
The San Francisco based band, Grace Sings Sludge has released a new music video entitled, A Man Doesn’t Want in anticipation from their upcoming album, Life With Dick (Empty Cellar Records).
Life With Dick is the new album by Grace Sings Sludge (The Sandwitches, The Fresh and Onlys). It’s the continuation of a world Grace Cooper began illustrating as one of the lead songwriters of the San Francisco band The Sandwitches, and on her previous three collections of solo home recordings (released as limited run cassette tapes). As with the other solo albums, Grace does the artwork for Life With Dick. Her delicate yet disturbing pen and watercolor creations are the perfect accompaniment for her songs, and seem as though they’ve emerged from the same troubled dreams.
New Music Video: “Parallel Nightmares” – Moor Mother
Camae Ayewa, a.k.a. Moor Mother, takes to the woods in her latest lyric video for "Parallel Nightmares," with co-director Bob Sweeney. Found on 2016’s Fetish Bones (Don Giovanni Records), the track comingles with the shaky, blurry, black & white footage in ominous fashion that feels more frightening than a hike with the folks of Blair Witch Project or doctored video sightings of Slender Man. It’s a match made in your deepest, darkest fears. Moor Mother is set to kickoff her European tour tomorrow at the World Minimal Music Festival in Amsterdam. (Photo by Bob Sweeney)
New Track: “Proud” – (Sandy) Alex G
Henceforth, Alex Giannascoli will now be referred to as (Sandy) Alex G. With his new album, Rocket, slated for release on May 19 via Domino, “Proud” is its latest single to arrive. A relaxing weave of twinkling keys, strumming and tambourine develops the low-key, heart-warming, country-folk tune. It’s a sticky, slow-down-and-look-around ode, whose slow-motion style, lyric-depicting video complements it tone. You’ll find yourself humming that melody before too long. You can catch (Sandy) Alex G performing next in Philly on Saturday, July 8 at Union Transfer with Japanese Breakfast and Cende.
Las Rosas releases debut LP at Baby’s All Right on 04.08
We caught Las Rosas at an afternoon CMJ party on the (apparently) final edition of the Music Marathon in 2015, and it was obvious the guys didn’t lack good songwriting chops and the character necessary to make them shine. Since then, they’ve been extremely active in the NYC scene and beyond and even ventured to Europe earlier this year for a few dates. They are now releasing their debut album, wishful thinking-ly titled "Everyone Gets Exactly What They Want," and it confirms our early positive impressions. It’s a very enjoyable psych garage record with traces of ’50/60s pop revival, bolstered up by Jose Boyer’s raspy tenor, full of charisma and melodic ideas that are the foundation of this band’s DNA. Las Rosas will celebrate the release of the album at Baby’s All Right on April 8th with other noteworthy locals Breanna Barbara and Juan Wauters. Check out their new video for "Boys," below.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best garage/punk songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
