NYC-based folk rockers Evening Darling are bringing something a little different to the city: a country vein. You can hear it in their tasteful harmonies on "Live Where You Lay," reminiscent of Lady Antebellum, and the straightforward boom-chuck country/americana drum sound. There is a darkness to the slicing guitar solos and groovy keys, however, dare to make it more of a rock tune. The band has just released their self-titled debut album and will be playing The Mercury Lounge on May 18th in support of LA indie poppers Valley Queen. – Geena Kloeppel
New Music Video: “Echoes” – Koof & Vessna
Trumpet-wielding Koof Ibi (West Philadelphia Orchestra, The Extraordinaires) has combined forces with songstress Vessna Scheff. While the tandem goes by the abbreviated Koof & Vessna, their sound is far from it, as seen in their video for “Echoes”. Combining colors on a musically blank slate, Scheff’s clear-strolling mandolin and pensively powerful vocals are further extracted by the increasing suspense and sonic shape, as a percussive, rhythmic intensity aided by strings and horn blasts develops keen auditory imagery. The duo is set to perform at Bourbon & Branch on Saturday, May 6 with Caroline Reese and Lizzie No.
Shealeigh
Singer/Songwriter Shealeigh has recently released her debut EP, We All Need To Go Place. The now 19 year old Auburn Chicago teen found success early appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show at 12 and being named “Next Big Thing” by Radio Disney at just 13. While only 13 the sound this, her debut, EP is much more developed and mature.
Whimsical grief twinged indie-pop on eerie Near Northeast music video
The first few seconds of Near Northeast‘s Indali are ethereal, almost like the sound we imagine people hear when they are approaching the gates of heaven. Slowly creeping through the ambiance are reverb heavy guitar lines, keeping the music somewhere in between shoegaze and indie pop, with the legato feel helping the music steer clear of twee.
A certain seriousness is essential for the song given its subject matter: a mother and child being dragged out to sea by riptide. The video’s visuals underscore the tragedy in the music, with images of playful beachgoers intermingled with footage of people being drowned in tsunamis. As drummer Antonio Skarica put it in an interview with DC Music Download, “The line is so thin between carefree frolicking and complete destruction.”
Near Northeast’s new album True Mirror drops May 3rd. You can catch the album release show at St Stephen’s church on Newton St this Friday night.

Overwatcher Brings Big Band Intensity to Post-Hardcore
Overwatcher is a big band of melodic post-hardcore screamers. They maintain the aggression and intensity you might find in a Nashville DIY garage or punk outfit, but tease the sonic palette with a number of feedback techniques you might find in a psychedelic or noise rock band. That being said, the short bursts of dissonance and noise don’t overstay there welcome in the songs. The crew of six knows how to serve a song, offering just enough melodic instrumentation to keep the essential structures intact. If you’re a fan of high energy post-hardcore, post-rock, noise rock, or screamo dispositions, be sure to check out their next performance at The End on May 3rd.

THE EFFENS – GLAM GRUNGE AT THE BOVINE!
How bout a grunge/glam combo? Thats The Effens. Their video for "Burn Blush" is actually kind of hard to watch. It’s like an episode of Fear Factor watching this worm thing hang on to some guy’s face….and then it goes ON HIS EYEBALL…wipe that thing off already! Anyways the song is quite good…very heavy on the grunge rock. Simple and sludgy downstrokes on the guitar set the tone for the whole song. The Effens play Bovine Sex Club on May 13th with Ol’CD and The Leslie Spits. Kris Gies
HIGH HEELS LO FI – PREMIER PARTY ROCK BAND
Toronto’s Premier Party Rock Band – High Heels Lo Fi are a half n half guy/girl pop rock band. They have fuzzy pop-punk melodies along with greasy female vocals. Definitely a vintage vibe kinda like the New York Dolls, Joan Jett and maybe a little bit of KISS. Might as well just get wasted while watching them rock out live. High Heels Lo-Fi play Junction City Music Hall on Saturday with The Danger Bees, Big Name Actors and Flamingo Báy. – Kris Gies

Shoegazer John Lutkevich of Soft Fangs will play Baby’s All Right on Friday night, opening for Wildhoney from Baltimore and Froth from LA. Lutkevich will also play to support his latest release, a split EP with fellow Brooklyn bedroom pop band Bellows. You can stream the whole record — which includes Soft Fangs’ tracks "Sugarblood" and "Nine Lives" – below. – Will Sisskind
Sam Sowyrda (Cloud Becomes Your Head) releases ‘Luminous Horizons’
This debut solo entry by percussionist Sam Sowyrda (also of Brooklyn psychedelic-pop sextet Cloud Becomes Your Hand) is the sound of a well-oiled machine running full efficiency just moments before it breaks down. Its two instrumental tracks—each clocking in over twenty-minutes—recall the trance-inducing Terry Riley of In C and the eremitic Brian Eno of Ambient 1-4. Of his two cuts, the title-track is the more diverse, featuring a spate of maddening, industrial-sounding tones, which transform midway through into wistfulness and end in hints of melodicism. "Occidental Error," instead, remains the more eerie: its layered patterns of minimal vibraphones pushing the limits of the instrument as a lead voice. In all, there is much anguish to behold here; yet there’s also refuge from it, as Sowydra’s primary inclination seems to be both esoteric and ambiguous. Experience his music-of-the-head in a live setting at Trans Pecos, May 13th, where the LP officially launches. Kindred spirits the Hallowed Bells (Philadelphia) and Ashcab Orchestra (Brooklyn) fill out the show. – Brian Chidester
New Music Video: “Falling Out of the Universe” – Oolala
We first came across Michael Baker as part of Philly folk duo The Spinning Leaves. He later took on the funktastic alter-ego of Rumi Kitchen in party band Johnny Showcase & The Mystic Ticket. The over-the-top persona has continued to take on a life of its own, bringing us the riff-heavy glam rock of Oolala. Bow down to the awesomeness of their debut music video for "Falling Out of the Universe," the first single off the group’s forthcoming album The New RockRoll Cosmology (The Giving Groove). And catch Oohlala in the flesh at their record release show on Saturday, May 27 at Boot & Saddle with MINKA and Carol Cleveland Sings!
New Littler EP Available for Streaming
Bad Hand, the new EP from quartet Littler, will be released on both 7” (Disposable America /Yellow K) and cassette (Disposable America/Anxiety Pop) on April 28, but you can stream it now at The Fader. Interspersing mellowing waves of acceptance, while also exhibiting aggressive points of raw, emotive venting, the album continually shifts perspective. In the midst, they find a melodic middle ground between peaks of peacefulness and potency. The band has a series of West Coast dates (including a record release show) that start next week.
Cousin Liar release video for “Soft Paws,” debut EP out now
On ther debut EP, Daydream Backwards, Cousin Liar serve up a striking fusion of atonal electronic elements into their dark-tinged experimental pop. It constantly keeps you guessing as it’s rarely straightforward, like on their latest "Soft Paws," which is ornamented with an alluring display of oozy, aqueous synths set against some Can-resembling drum patterns. The accompanying video also opens another portal into their inquisitive minds.
Daydream Backwards is out now via their official bandcamp page.
