Green Noise Reopens, Celebrates with DJs and Live Music

Portland is the kind of place where vinyl appreciation is taken seriously amongst much of the masses. While we’ve lost some of our beloved record shops, the few that are still around are special places that see much business at times other than just Record Store Day. Green Noise Records has lasted throughout the years, changing locations a couple times since its original southeast locale, but they’ve found yet another new up in northeast that they’re celebrating throughout the weekend.

Starting today, Green Noise is hosting their own sort of welcoming party, slated with sets from djs and bands alike. Most of today’s festivities, which started around noon, are dj sets. Patrons are invited to peruse the shop’s offerings while enjoying records spun by djs like Vera Rubin, Erich Zann and Ken Dirtnap, or tomorrow’s live performances from EMS, Low Culture and Davey Quinn. 

Admission is free and if you scope a few records you’d like to pick up, everything is 15% off the whole weekend. Come check out Green Noise’s new space, some awesome bands and djs, and some new vinyl sounds as well.

Eugene Marie drops new single, “Nice Smell”

Catcalling is one of the more frustrating aspects of living in the big apple, and being on the receiving end of incessant lines of creepy comments can be uncomfortable if not downright terrifying. What’s a girl to do? In the case of Lucy Marie Horton, one half of electro-pop duo, Eugene Marie, you turn it into music. The group’s newest track, “Nice Smell,” features lyrics exclusively culled from the mouths of her street harassers. Though transforming predatory phrases into a pointed pop hit is a feat, Eugene Marie pulls it off seamlessly; crafting a piece that is playful and melodic, but also thrusts the dialogue surrounding catcalling further into the public realm. Weekend Warrior, May 5 – 7

Psychic Teens orchestrate gloomy, ruminating, melodic post-punk with volatile noisy tendencies, magnifying the murky slow burn into a full-on, shoegazing spectacle. Tonight, the trio celebrates their latest album HEX (available via Hex Records) with a release show at Boot & Saddle, where they’ll explore the darkness via steel-cold, slicing guitars and booming, brooding, baritone vocals. They’ll be joined by the combative, grunge-punk quartet of Tiny Vices and the ferocious, fuzzed-out, psych instrumentations meets clairvoyant, catchy vocals of Dulls. And after releasing their sophomore album New Kind of Normal via their own label Plum Records earlier today, Augusta Koch, Allegra Anka and Kelly Olsen, a.k.a. Cayetana, welcome their introspective, honest, emotive rock release this evening with a show at First Unitarian Church, where they’ll be supported by Shannen Moser, Katie Ellen, and Aster More.  

A day after releasing their new LP Veblen Death Mask via Kill Rock Stars, the enchanting, eclectic experimentation of Taiwan Housing Project steps into Johnny Brenda’s, wielding their off-kilter, jigsaw-puzzle sound, meshing the hauntingly unexpected with the inherently gripping. They’ll be sharing the stage with the mind-warping psych-punk of Igneous Eyes and ESCAPE-Ism, the latest project from D.C. stalwart Ian Svenonius.  

The crowds head back to Boot & Saddle this Sunday for a March On Harrisburg Benefit, featuring the exuberant, melodic, psych-folk stretches of Pine Barons. They’ll be donating their time along with the get-loose, retro-fitted psych-pop of Ceramic Animal and harmony-harnessing trio of TIOGA. – Michael Colavita

Deli Premiere: Flight of Fire Release New Video for “One More Sip”

 Fresh off of their win at The New England Music Awards (Best in State-Massachusetts), Boston rockers, Flight of Fire continue to take the NE music scene by force.  They have arrived, armed to the teeth with their album Path of the Phoenix, a 7-song concept album that spins a tale about "the treacherous journey of doing whatever it takes to follow your own truth".  Their latest single and video for "One More Sip" (filmed at Hard Rock Boston), showcases one of the more blistering cuts on the album, while giving the viewer a taste of their high energy live set.  Screaming guitars, grueling riffs, and powerhouse vocals abound as the all-female quartet take on Boston and beyond.  Check them out at House of Blues Foundation Room on 5/12 with blindspot, Katey and the Illicit, and Wonder City.  You can also catch them at the Mill City Ballroom on 5/18 as part of The Break Into Action Tour. -Brian Varneke

LPR Presents will present another night of The Hum, the curatorial, programming, and production child of Rachael Pazdan. A night of "womanly" collaborations will be held this coming Monday at Greenpoint venue Good Room.  The lineup is of particular importance to us here at The Deli because it features some favorite artists we’ve covered in the past including Buscabulla, Ela Minus, Beverly, Escort, Novelty Daughter and NOIA. PPL’s Reincarnated Shoegaze

PPL is a three-piece outfit from NYC that has dragged the shoegaze aesthetic from its late 80s/early 90s heyday right up into the present. They play extensively with dynamic shifts, layering feedback, using delay to create dronescapes, soaking guitar hooks in chorus and reverb, and providing sudden bursts of carefully crafted sonic walls. For such a bare bones lineup like guitar, bass, and drums, it’s genuinely impressive how massive this band can make itself sound. Every noise they make is meant to serve the song. The sonic textures they design prove remiscent of My Bloody Valentine while the arrangements of songs often carry alternative rock and pop sensibilities that bring 90s classics like Weezer to mind. Be sure to catch their record release show for their self titled EP Post Personality Loss on May 24th at Union Pool.

Debut Zillas on Acid EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Via their label 100 Years of Solid Dudes, the DJ duo of Thomas Roland and James Weissinger, a.k.a. Zillas on Acid, has released its first EP of original material on vinyl. Back to the Beast. Genre-morphing, trance-inducing, percussively-propelled beats lead one onto the dance floor, demanding movement. Those acid-tinged takes warp around your mind, innately traveling down to your toes. The Making Time vets will help you shake off the gloom of this rainy start to your weekend. They’ll also be holding their 12" release celebration on Saturday, May 27 at The Dolphin, if you need some dancin’ company.

Noise rockers NØMADS drop new single, land Pianos residency starting 05.09

NYC-based indie rockers NØMADS describe themselves as "two people in a room hitting things hard and trying to communicate life," and if that doesn’t sound like the perfect way of navigating through all the things life hurls at you, then I don’t know what does. With understated vocals and catchy riffs, the duo crafts tracks with strong hooks and engaging verses, but there’s a decidedly noisy streak that creates the real magic in the band’s songs. Artists on the rise: slack rockers peaer play Sunnyvale on May 13

Brooklyn-based Peaer crafts understated indie rock songs that feel raw and unpolished enough to reflect the types of real-life concepts wrestled with in their lyrics. A highly dynamic band with a lot of heart, Peaer is tight enough to flirt with the wildness of coming undone, without ever succumbing to it. Active since the beginning of the decade, the band in 2016 released a noteworthy 7 track record, one of our favorite within the genre, check out "single Cliff Song," below, and opener "Pink Spit," here. – Olivia Sisinni
