Famous Laughs bring spacey psych-rock to Hideout 06.10

Posted on:

This Saturday, Chicago’s Famous Laughs will be hitting the stage in their hometown at the Hideout. The ambient-rock group has put out a few tracks throughout the years on SoundCloud, more recently with a chilling six-and-a-half minute song titled, “The Handwriting Sings”. The track features an ambient layering of electric guitars that mesh smoothly with repeated and chilling lyrics, a melancholic sound reminiscent of “Sleep Apnea” by Beach Fossils in a more disordered, disjointed fashion (psych rock aficionados will also hear a hint of Syd Barrett). Be sure to check them out as they open up for Fire-Tools and Horse Lords on June 10th. – Pearse Devlin

Brooklyn garage rockers Teen Vice share track “Kiss It Goodbye,” release EP Saddest Summer on 7/14

Posted on:

Emerging from their own previously established bands, Brooklyn’s Teen Vice prepares to release their debut EP Saddest Summer on July 14 via Commission Music.  Tammy Hart, who provides lead vocals and guitar, initially made a name for herself in the bands Winning Looks, Making Friendz and MEN. Bassist/vocalist Joshua Ackley and drummer Derek Pippin had long been the core of punk band The Dead Betties, previously featured on The Deli here.  Guitarist May Dantas rounds out the quartet, whose sound attempts to meld Fleetwood Mac style melodies with the punk aggression of Hole.  On featured track “Kiss It Goodbye” (streaming below) clean, jangly guitar chords establish the three chord rhythm before thrashing drums, fuzzy electric guitar and bass throb crash through.  Tammy’s vocals provide a softer touch on verse lyrics like “swear I didn’t mean it – really didn’t mean it,” while the chorus explodes with Joshua joining in on title line lyrics “so kiss it na, na, na, na, na – goodbye”.  Teen Vice will play Sunnyvale on 8/5 with The Suzan. – Dave Cromwell

RVA’s Lobo Marino defies cynicism with their soulful world-folk

Posted on:

When I first clicked on the bandcamp page of Lobo Marino, the cynic in me scoffed at the idea of two Americans living in Richmond, VA imitating throat singing and chanting meditatively about the sun setting. However, after listening to a few tracks I was impressed by the power of Lobo Marino’s music, the versatile song-writing and moving meditations on the ebb and flow of life.

A lot of bands claim to be making music more for its own sake than the money, but with Lobo Marino one gets the sense that it might actually be true.

New Track: “You’ll Cry” – Residuels

Posted on:

Garage-psych power trio Residuels was not planning to release its latest single "You’ll Cry". However, with the recent passing of music great Gregg Allman, the band felt that the "sort of self-indulgent" 70’s "Southern Rock"-inspired number would be a fitting tribute. Residuels will also be heading out on tour next month with The Coathangers, but before that takes place, they’ll be rockin’ the AM on Sunday morning, June 25 at The Barbary for the first annual Psychedelic Breakfast with An Albatross, Die Choking, and much, much more.

The Prefab Messiahs Release New Video for New Single, Sometimes Sunnydaze

Posted on:

The Prefab Messiahs formed in 1981 in the art-punk scene of Worchester, Mass.  While their initial run lasted just over a year, they reformed in 2012 and began writing new tunes that are as relevant now as they were when their career started.  The band blazes through your speakers with a sound that is two parts 60s power pop, two parts brit-punk, with a dash of psychedilia.  Their newest single, "Sometimes Sunnydaze" is an ode to staying inside on beautiful days, and yet is a must-add for your summer beach playlist.  Check out the music video in the link below. –Brian Varneke

Haybaby plays Our Wicked Lady AND Tender Trap on 06.08

Posted on:

Haybaby, a self-described "sludge-pop" band from Brooklyn, are a force to be reckoned with on the DIY scene. Each song on their latest record, Blood Harvest, showcases the band’s remarkable skill at controlling its dynamics, utilizing tension and release to devastating effect. Leslie Hong’s vocals are saturated with a pop sensibility but ready to explode, providing an ear-catching contrast to the grunge-like dissonance of the rhythm section. The band just announced they’ll perform two shows the same night this coming Thursday (06.08), at Our Wicked Lady and Tender Trap! Check out the video for "Yours" below. – Ethan Ames
