Charles Fauna will open the album release show for his label mate Cape Francis tomorrow at Mercury Lounge. Fauna, the moniker of singer-songwriter Charlie Mischer, has had a busy summer co-writing singles for other artists, mixing new tracks at Electric Lady Studios, and releasing the music video for his song "Restless Child". Twisting bodies, darkened hallways, stark rooms, and a bouncing atonal beat give the song and video an eerie, adreline-fueled vibe. Watch it below, then catch Charlie at Mercury tomorrow night (September 29). – Will Sisskind
Indie pop artist Kingsbury reclaims control on “Alone Again”
Caroline Kingsbury has dropped a single from her upcoming LP with Northern Transmissions, “Alone Again”. Fresh from Nashville, this emerging artist is creating a brand new name for herself in her new home of Los Angeles. Kingsbury has a similar aesthetic to Lana Del Ray but creates her own dreamy pop chords, smooth vocal transitions, and catchy drumbeats. Her poptastic sound creates the perfect mood for any lazy day drinking by yourself, long night drives with your best friend or dancing when no one is looking. Kingsbury’s heart bleeds through her music; she speaks volumes to those struggling through a changing period in their life. Fighting alone through every situation you find yourself in, and figuring it out alone. Not only an inspiration to me, but anyone who travels and moves a lot, picking up and leaving everything behind you is a lot harder than people think. This song is our anthem, and I thank her for that. Sometimes it takes a few falls in order to pick yourself back up. – Kayla Hay
French Chanteuse Seduces With Synthpop
Enchanting and magnetic, Lou Rebecca is a gift from Paris that has decidedly made her home in the Austin synth scene. Her self-titled debut album is an amalgam of disco, ambient and, avant-garde electronica that flow effortlessly together. Rebecca’s timeless pop sound is fortified with the artist’s air of mystique which is well choreographed and thought out. The elegance of Rebecca pairs well with her venerated label, Holodeck Records, who boasts a stable of genre-bending and eccentric talent. The future is bright for the mesmerizing young woman who is casting her spell over the city of Austin.
New Track: “Learning Curves” – Weller
The trio of Weller will release their debut self-titled full-length album on October 20. Its lead single, “Learning Curves,” rolls forward as a reflective tale of continuous evaluation while overthinking consumes one’s mind. Sometimes you can get stuck in an endless loop of self-sabotage, and it’s best to take a step back and reevaluate. Weller will be holding a record release celebration on SAturday, November 4 at JJ’s Diner, supported by Three Man Cannon and Allegra. (Photo by Emily Dubin)
Singer/Songwriter Erica Leigh Shares Her Story of Survival, New Single “Calling All Survivors”
Boston-based artist Erica Leigh, is not only a singer/songwriter with an exceptional talent. She is also an uplifting figure in the community, a source of hope for those who share in her struggle. Diagnosed with thyroid cancer on the day of her debut CD release, Erica was told she may never sing again. Now she is back in the fold with a message of perseverance and courage, hoping to spread awareness and get her story out to the people that need to hear it. Erica reached out to us to help pass that message along and to premiere her new video, "Calling All Survivors":
The new song is called "Calling All Survivors". What do you hope to achieve with this single/video?
When I wrote this song, I was writing the song that I needed to hear – a song of defiance, resilience, and hope. After it was complete, I knew I had to turn this experience into something positive by bringing awareness to this disease, and bringing people together so that no one has to feel alone with what they are surviving through.
The video features a number of talented local musicians. How did you pull the group together?
I feel extremely grateful that my friends also happen to be talented local musicians and a brilliant local videographer! All I had to do was ask: they made it too easy on me! Hearing their voices in surround sound as I played the song was a magical experience that I’ll never forget!
You received some devastating news on the day of a milestone in your career. How did that phone call affect how you approached your performance that night? Has your creative process changed since you have overcome this obstacle?
I still remember being startled awake by that call. I was in shock, of course, but I didn’t want to walk off the stage to a bunch of apologies and worried faces. I wanted the evening to be solely about the music. And as a result, there was a tangible emotion behind every lyric. It was certainly traumatic, but also a bit serendipitous to receive this news on a day when I was scheduled to be around all my family and friends. Looking back on the difficult years that followed, I am not the same songwriter or singer (or person) I was before. My lyrics are no longer limited to love songs. They’re about overcoming loss, letting go, and strength in vulnerability.
In your documentary (link listed below) you mention that you began singing again mere weeks after your recovery process started. What was this like for you? What role did music play in your recovery?
I remember singing through the pain at an open mic, with surgical tape still on my neck. I was devastated to release a CD one day, and then have to completely abandon it the next. I was afraid that if I stopped too long to recover, my album would become irrelevent, so I pushed myself too hard and burned out completely as a result. I was losing a loved one to cancer at the same time. Times were dark. Suffice it to say, no release tour happened. I tried to keep up appearances but I lost all desire to make music in the process. Long story short, the identity crisis that followed led me to finally take a long break. And several false-starts later, I am finally loving music again!
What would you say to someone going through a similar struggle?
I would say let others help you. Don’t feel guilty and be compassionate toward yourself, too. Allow yourself a break without any deadlines. Also prepare for late-onset emotional trauma when you think you’re finally out of the woods. Advocate for yourself. Consider therapy. Hang in there – you are not alone!
It seems that, understandably, this has become a motivating force for you. What can we expect from Erica Leigh in the future?
I’ve got new songs to share that I’m going to release in multiple waves of 2-3 tracks, beginning sometime in 2018. I just finished building a state-of-the-art vocal isolation booth with my boyfriend Sean, and I’m currently setting up shop in a new multimedia music & art studio where my songwriting and painting can influence each other! I’m playing a bunch of shows, headlining at The Burren Pub 1/27 and Amazing Things Art Center 3/31!
Erica’s debut album, Puzzle Heart, is available now on iTunes and you can see more of her story in a short documentary featured here.

NYC Record of the Month Dan Friel (Parts & Labor) returns with Upper Wilds
The Deli is intimately familiar with the musical inclinations of electronic musician and composer Dan Friel, having featured his previous band Parts & Labor on the cover of its 11th NYC issue back in 2006. The noise rock group called it quits in 2012, after which Friel mostly focused on running his label Cardboard Records in conjunction with former P&L bassist J.Warshaw. We are thrilled to find out that Dan has a new project, and that it’s as noisy as his previous one. Named Upper Wilds, the band plays what could be described as a noisy brand of drone-rock with industrial and (rather buried) pop influences. Distorted guitars, synths, drums, and vocals overlap and blend, in some kind of well orchestrated orgy of fuzz. Dan’s earnest sounding vocal melodies, at times reminiscent of early R.E.M. and seminal hardcore band Hüsker Dü, emerge from this sea of distortion, somehow giving it an organized shape. Like the aforementioned bands’ records, this album has a monolithic, recognizable sound, but what it loses in variety, it gains in power and impact – we can’t find a weak song in it. The group will be celebrating the release of their debut album "Guitar Module 2017" at Alphaville on October 7th.
Lady Electric – Brand New 80’s Tune
Brand new 80’s synth rock from right here in Toronto. Lady Electric has a very cool sound that could have been brought to the future by Marty Mcfly from 1985. Their tune “Who Has To Know” has a night time cruisin’ feel to it. Very funky bass lines and sharp drums. The synth really carries the whole tune though and keeps you ridin’ with it the whole time. The vocals fit perfectly in with the song as well. You don’t hear much of these kinda tunes comin’ out these days so dig in. – Kris Gies
New Irreversible Entanglements EP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Progressive, liberation, free jazz ensemble Irreversible Entanglements just released its self-titled EP via International Anthem/Don Giovanni Records. Combining the socially conscious, poetic prowess of Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) with the expansive fervor and fury collectively by Keir Neuringer (alto saxophone), Aquiles Navarro (trumpet), Luke Stewart (double bass), and Tcheser Holmes (drums), the group pushes against the status quo in a raw yet refined demonstration of resistance. Musically advancing on a non-linear, albeit absorbing path, while providing a detail-rich, sonic canvas, lyrically, the messages ring clear and direct. What may initially sound "out there" is in fact right here in front of you.
New Track: “Oregon Chem-Trail” – Plaque Marks
Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship, the forthcoming debut EP from Plaque Marks, is slated for release on October 27 via Learning Curve Records. Grim desperation resounds in the vocals, as a pulverizing spiral of backend and merciless guitar steamroll ahead on its new single “Oregon Chem-Trail”. Unifying members of Creepoid, Ecstatic Vision, Fight Amp, and The Powder Room sounded good in theory; now, that hypothetical can be heard, and it hits as hard as one can hope. You can catch the band at Kung Fu Necktie on Wednesday, November 15, with Bardus and Rubber. (Photo by Dante Torrieri)
Bermuda Angels Premiere Self-Titled Debut 09.29
Bermuda Angels offers half entrancing, half disturbing synth-driven art-pop that is dark and seductive, bewildering in its own way. Sophie Kadow’s chilling and dizzying vocals are tempered by the warmer, more grounded lyrical style of her artistic partner, Bermuda Jones.
Fromthe band’s self-titled LP comes the single “On The Run,” a love-song to toxicity and a loss of self, further cemented by the surrealistic Spaghetti Western backdrop of the single’s music video. Catch the disorienting Bermuda Angels LP on September 29th and succumb to the delirium. – Amanda Ogea
