Deeper embarks on a Fall Tour today that is sure to bring them increased attention on the East Coast. The band, consisting of Shiraz Bhatti, Mike Clawson, Nic Gohl, and Drew McBride, released a locally praised single, “Transmogrified”, via Fire Talk in May 2016. Since that time they have become entrench in the Chicago DIY scene and are poised to take New York by storm. You can find the full tour schedule here. ;
Weekend Warrior, October 13 – 15
Dear Deli Readers,
It’s been an honor covering Philly’s underground music scene for the past nine years, and we truly appreciate all who have been so supportive of our site and our mission. And of course, mucho love goes out to the all the local area musicians who have been kind enough to share their personal art with us. Without you, The Deli would certainly not exist. (Well, maybe in some form or another, but we might be covering some of our other loves like food, weed or puppies. 😉
We truly enjoy taking this time to celebrate our wonderful Philly music community with you, so join us this Saturday night at PhilaMOCA for The Deli Philly’s 9th Anniversary Bash! This year, we will be donating all proceeds from the event to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable member of our society,” and we’d like to thank Deli faves The Retinas, Them Jones, and So Totally for donating their time and talents to entertain all of us for the evening. Now, if you’ve attended any of our anniversary celebrations in the past, then you know how we do it. If not, more deets are available HERE, but there will also be plenty of surprises that we can’t mention just yet.
Looking forward to partying down with you soon!
Cheers,
Q.D. Tran & The Deli Staff
P.S.
Shout out to Modern Baseball (who may be performing their final shows for the foreseeable future this weekend at Union Tranfer) and former Deli Anniversary alums Suburban Living (who will be returning home from tour with Frankie Rose, this Sunday at Ortlieb’s)!

Pure Mids bring hazy sweetness on new single “Maybe It’s Alright”
Things are looking for Pure Mids on "Maybe It’s Alright." The trio of Will Gonzalez, Steve Martinez, and Daniel Jurado see acceptance as a pathway to change, a sentiment that carries weight as they deliver a catchy confection that hits an aural sweet spot. Martinez’s staggered jangle tone leads the way as Gonzalez’s softly drawled vocals get lost in the song’s billowy groove. It charges through with a keen sense of songcraft, swung with a rhythmic drive that propels forward with a dreamy undercurrent.
"Maybe It’s Alright" is the latest single off of their forthcoming debut EP, Optimistic-ism, due out next year via Dreamtime Palace. Juan Rodríguez
The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Flamingo Chicks
Toward the tail end of this past summer, Flamingo Chicks (formerly known as Space Cadets) released their debut EP XOXOXO. What originally started as a two-piece project, Charlie Dubuc, Jason Loux, Becka Lundy, and Thor Speeler soon discovered that they “truly clicked” as a quartet, combining their varied and learned musical backgrounds to make cathartic garage-punk that sometimes finds itself wafting over psych-pop terrain (which may stem from their communal love for of Montreal). The band recently found their way atop our Featured Artist(s) Poll, so we are happy to be able to share more about Flamingo Chicks HERE.
New Track: “Glowing Clothes” – Torito
The bull’s on the loose! Torito unleashes a nonstop, lyrical torrent on his new single “Glowing Clothes,” which is slated to appear on his forthcoming release Fabric Scraps, scheduled to drop in January. Tenacious, stream-of-consciousness flows are welded with a scientific precision as the track speeds through the streets, meshing confidence with a comedic sense. Torito will be rushing the stage tomorrow night at Kung Fu Necktie, with Kiddead, Cody Cody Jones, and Felipe Pupo.
Evening Glow
Evening Glow recently released a new EP called Perfect Harmony. The EP is also available in cassette format bundled with two of their previously released 2017 singles, “To You Only” and “Blush”.

A Deli Premiere: Def.GRLS’ “Good Time,” live at Warsaw tomorrow 10.13
Def.GRLS are energy itself, a lazer-light show of heavy psych-pop madness. It’s impossible to listen to their music without feeling the grit of glitter in one’s teeth or hair. Def.GRLS, as contagious as they are, are helpfully releasing their first LP “GRLS GRLS GRLS” on 11.17 to keep the party going. But, just to get a hit of the glitter to make it until then, they leaked their single “Good Time” for us to premiere! Tomorrow Def.GRLS open for Andrew W.K., the party-master himself, at Warsaw. Don’t miss out! —Amanda Ogea
New Music Video: “Angel Time” (Feat. Davey & The Chains) – Jo Kusy
Featuring Davey and the Chains, “Angel Time” will be included on Jo Kusy’s forthcoming November release, The Amazing Jumpin’ Jo Kusy. A carefree, funky groove sets the tone, with the video’s black & white animation serving as a guide through the song in storyboard style. That loose, percussive/backend-pacing, dance quality taps into the vibe of legendary favorites like Bowie and Beck. You can catch Kusy tomorrow evening at Creep Records, as part of The Morelings’s record release celebration.
Bad Galaxy streams new album + plays at Muchmore’s tomorrow (10.13)
Bad Galaxy‘s latest self-titled EP displays the band’s prowess for crafting indie tracks with thoughtful, poignant lyricism and a moody sonic textures. The brainchild of musician Alexis Pastuhov, the project started after Pastuhov moved to NYC from Colorado. The songs on the record speak to both his transition and the broader culture and identity shifts that occur when living in a city like the Big Apple. Says Pastuhov, "…just like the city, the music is dynamic both sonically and thematically. There are a lot of highs and lows as the album progresses from song to song and those shifts are just as much a product of my own creative neuroses as they are a product of the city’s ever-changing mood." We’re stoked to premiere the new, self-titled album so hit the play button on Bad Galaxy streaming below, and if you want the live version of it, don’t miss the band’s live show tomorrow at Muchmore’s in Brooklyn. – Olivia Sisinni
Honey releases sophomore LP, plays Alphaville on 10/13
With the recent release of their sophomore album “New Moody Judy,” Brooklyn post punk rockers Honey deliver an aggressive collection of fuzz and wah-wah guitar-fueled songs. Opener “Wage Agreement” is propelled by a furious power trio wall of sound featuring an ominously tense bending guitar part and half pleading/half shouting vocals, reminiscent of early Richard Hell. Follow-up “Dream Come Now” amps up the groove to punk rock levels with a nod to the Ramones. The album’s title track leans on a heavy psych guitar riff and Iggy Pop Detroit city drawl. Deeper cuts like “Hungry,” “Bagman” and “Power” go for the high-speed velocity of an accelerated hyper-blues. Album closer “Peggy Ray” rides fuzzy bass, slashing guitars and smack-down drumming for nearly eight full minutes. The album is available on Wharf Cat Records and will be released with a party on Friday 10/13 at Alphaville. – Dave Cromwell
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best punk/garage/diy songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
New Track: “Where to Begin?” – Chet Williams
Chet Willams recently shared a new EP, entitled Where to Begin?. Its title-track, which closes out the album, begins on an acoustic guitar stroll, before escalating in lyrical reflection. It ramps between the ache of the past and the confident surge towards a hopeful future. Things are perpetually complicated and chaotic; however, amid the personal storm, it’s important to recognize the hope of light at the end of the tunnel.
